How many miles are you getting per tank?
I usually drive about 75% local and 25% highway, in Queens, NY. But i think I'm getting poor gas mileage. I have only been get about 180 miles per fill up. I do have some fun driving, shifting around 5000rpm, but I mostly shift at 3000 rpm. Could I really be driving so poorly to only be getting 180 miles per tank? I know there are many mpg threads, which concerns me even more because i see many people are getting 250+miles. Could there possible be something wrong with my car? Or do i really just need to change my driving ways.
That doesn't seem normal. I believe the car holds around 13 gallons of fuel. Assuming you put in ~12 gallons that means you are only getting about 15 MPG. You should be at least be doing 250+ miles or so on a tank. Is the car ever idling for long periods of time?
Thats what i was thinking too, if I am only getting 180 miles per tank, than i would have to be getting really bad mpgs. No the car never idles for long. I know I have some spirited driving, but I honestly don't think its bad enough to only get 180 miles.
I got 340 a couple days, 90% or more was highway... As it was a 4-5hr road trip.
However, if it counts my car is boosted. |
Wow thats great. So I'm guessing something is wrong with my car, do you guys have any idea of what could be causing such poor gas mileage?
u can reset ur average mpg after every fill up, its pretty accurate... i did the calculation and it was off by a tiny bit
im getting pretty bad mpg right now, low 20s. i think its cause its cold, im driving the car pretty hard, and stop/go traffic |
On my current tank I've already done 140 miles and have half a tank left, all city driving, with various blasts to redline
hmmm so i guess i should monitor it for a few more days since thats usually how long a tank lasts for me. Do you think the dealer might be able to find whats wrong, because i really doubt its the way i drive, I know I'm not THAT bad.
@dad&sonFRS - Around 330+ per tank usually, though I haven't really driven long distance all winter so my numbers are lower now.
@dad&sonFRS, in first post you say you do approx 75% local and noticed your location says Queens,NY. How much of that local portion is in snail pace heavy congestion traffic? If you are than that would be one factor why the bad mileage.
I get around 320-340 a tank in the city
I am getting 400-470 km till the low fuel light comes on.

and I drive almost 100% in town, 80% of the tank is my daily commute to/from work which is only 5 miles - so the car never warms up. So unless you drive it like a dog, that's probably worst case scenario. After the car is broken in I will probably average 22-24 mpg |
On average I get 260ish a tank give or take 10 miles and that's with some daily hooning
I can squeeze out 400 miles on a tank. I live in the Laughlin NV/Bullheard City AZ area, so it's not really city nor is it highway driving.
I use every gas saving technique I can think of. I start in 2nd gear snow mode (I have the automatic). I use manual shifting, upshifting at 2000-2100 RPM. And featherfoot the throttle as much as possible. I maintain higher gears as long as possible. Not much fun, but I traded in a Prius, so I got used to good gas mileage. Doing this, I can get 33-34 MPG on the dashboard; maximum speed 45 MPH. This is opposed to 35-36 on the highway; maximum speed 75-77 MPH. I have less than 2000 miles on the car, so maybe it'll get better when the engine loosens up a bit. I still blast it to redline when I am in the mood. I just have to pick my spots. And not too often. Needless to say, I didn't buy a sports car for fuel economy runs. But my gas budget has pretty much doubled, what with the reduced MPG and premium gas. BUT I LOVE THIS FRIGGING CAR!!! |
400+ average.

First off, I feel that trying to measure your gas mileage by figuring on how far a car will go on a tank of gas may be misleading, because of the variables involved. I would suggest that you fill up your tank to "click off" on the pump re-set the trip meter to "0", drive till the tank is down to about 1/4 and fill up (to click off) at the same pump then claculate d your gas mileage (miles driven divided by gallons consumed). Repeat this cycle maybe three times, then average all three values. This should give you a good idea of your average gas mileage. humfrz |
I get around 420KM before red light comes on with 60% highway, 40% city.
I'm guessing it could get 450km sh til its fully empty. Depends on weather conditions too. If its snow/cold, that average goes way down. Fall, I was averaging about 8.7L/100km and now during the winter, about 9.8L/100km. I usually follow speed limit during the city and 7000 rpm it when im on the on ramp. |
I get about 270 miles from first click of full at pump to low light on, give or take. That's usually the high end but its always pretty close to that. Tropical climate, 80's, pretty much sea level, lots of stop and go city.

I usually always fiil at 300-ish. If I let it go dry i'd prolly be nippin at 400.

Thank you all for your inputs, I will continue to monitor the car , and start grandma driving it to see how my mileage improves. Half of me wants it to be the cars fault for the poor mileage, the other half wants it to be my fault so this way nothing is wrong with the car lol
When do you fill up? There's at least 50 miles difference between the 1/4 fill line and when the light comes on.
When the light comes on is generally about 10 gallons, worst case 200 miles isn't unusual with all city driving, EPA estimates 22 mpg with the manual transmission. I usually get 250-320 miles on a tank depending on how and where I'm driving. |

You do not have to "grandma drive" the car to get good gas mileage. Over 103 tanks, I've averaged 334 miles to the tank and 32.5MPG (including a few where I filled before my normal just before the light comes on). Most of it is closer to highway speed than in city speed. See my owner's journal first post for the full breakdown by tank. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6178 I do not, under any stretch of the imagination grandma drive. I'm usually full throttle at launch and my goal is to make the traction control light blink at me around curves. Like others suggest, you should check the mileage by calculating it, and maybe even take a couple of highway speed road trips to see if you get better. My guess is you spend a lot of time not moving too fast. |

Thanks everyone, yeah i think my poor mileage is probably due both to driving on lock roads, hitting traffic lights constantly, and by hooning around. But I am going to continue monitoring my mileage and try and come up a more accurate mileage.
Mine gets about 26-27mpg. Lots of uphill in my daily commute and the negative degree weather here doesn't help. During the summer it jumps up to 30-31mpg.
I'm happy when I break 25 mpg. Dude who is getting 400 per tank has a miracle car.
According to the dash, I average about 26 mpg. I don't really care enough to monitor it appropriately. haha
I get about 280-290 miles per tank but I have a 3 minute commute to and from school
Averaging 30.4 with a stop and go freeway commute over 50 miles...
I'm hitting 19-20, but I'm still in my break-in, so I'm revving up to ~3700 rpm and back down and back up again as often as possible.
I've monitored my gas millage for every fill up I have had since I got the car just over a year ago (other than the first tank). I'm currently at my 37th fill up and the average is 26.80 mpg. I fill up to full when the light comes on with 93 octane if that makes a difference. That's mainly to and from work which is 14 miles with 90% highway driving. Next tank will bump it up with me currently at 240 miles and quarter tank left.
I drive fairly conservatively, but my 30-40 minute commute with a longggg highway section only results in 24-25ish mpg. It's pretty bad in my opinion. But I do have OFT.

But I actually get around 280miles until the light show up :D |
Well OP if it makes you feel any better I live in LA and i mostly do city driving with heavy traffic on my way back home. I get 170-190 miles per tank. Yeah not the best results but for city driving with constant lights and stops not too bad i guess?
Just out of curiosity, what brand of gas do you use? I used to fill up with 93 gas at a station owned by a small chain out here, but after I filled up there for a while my mileage started to tank like crazy. I have a mostly highway commute and I averaged about 23-24MPG over the past few months. A few weeks ago I started filling up at a station with ethanol free 91 and my mileage went up by about 1-2MPG almost immediately, and is steadily improving. I assumed that because the gas was labeled 93 it'd be fine for the car, but the station must be using cheap gas or may need to clean the tank. The car seems much happier on the better quality 91.
On a somewhat related note the car started throwing codes related to the fuel pump and rail pressure sensor on startup about 2-3 months ago, which I assumed were due to a mechanical or electrical problem. I switched to the ethanol free gas as part of my own troubleshooting of the issue, and in addition to the increased MPG my startup issues went away completely. Between the increased MPG and reliability I'll happily pay a few cents more per gallon. If you don't think your driving style is part of the problem it could be the gas you're using. |
Or you could use Fuelly and track your MPG, fill-ups, and total miles driven. Does all the hard work for you and even plots it on a graph.
Winter blend of fuel will decrease your mileage. All my vehicles are getting terrible miles/tank.
