There are still good people out there

So as most of you might know already, the Northern Virginia area got hit with a little snow storm the other night. I was working evenings when the storm kicked in at the end of my shift. They told us they had rooms and beds for us at the hospital if we got snowed in, and my wife was already told she needed to stay at her job because no one would be coming in the next day. I said 'f' it I wanna make sure she's ok and not by herself. So the video basically starts out with me struggling to drive through the snow on my way to my wife. Near the end of the video is what I really want to showcase, as it's a human helping out another human in their time of need. Holding the door open for someone is an infinite act of kindness in my book, but this guy really went out of his way to help me out. I can't thank him enough.

TL;DR
I suck at driving in the snow; there is still hope for the future

I hope you got his number to buy him a drink.

DoopaTroopa 02-14-2014 04:06 AM

I think I might know where he and his wife works. I'm gonna pay them a visit when the snow melts.

LadyFRZ 02-14-2014 04:24 AM

Great to see. :) Made me happy that there's still good in people.
Glad you're also safe, looks quite scary out there with all that ice.

Side note, how does the beauty behave in snow/ice?

DoopaTroopa 02-14-2014 04:45 AM

She handles like shit. T/C usually kicks in and saves my life, but I have to be wary of the throttle. I'm on stock Primacys so they're really not meant for snow. People with snow tires should chime in.

I couldn't agree with you more! Compared to my 2007 Civic I used to drive, this car is a lot harder to drive in the snow/ice. I dunno how many times my car slid sideways on my way to work this morning...

First off, I think it's really cool that you drove out so your wife wouldn't have to be alone. Good man.

So don't take this the wrong way when I say, it's stupid to drive on summer tires in the snow. It's not just you, I've seen it a number of times on these forums, but it's an easy way to hurt yourself or someone else. Not to mention that good samaritan probably wouldn't have had to get sandblasted by dirty snow trying to help you get free.

I drive on summer tires in the snow... But to be honest we don't usually get snow around here. This week has been hectic with over a foot of snow around my home. I'm not used to it at all.

I'm glad someone helped you, OP! That restores my faith in humanity.

Mikem53 02-14-2014 10:06 AM

I feel your pain.. I backed my car out of my garage.. 3 feet onto the driveway, a slight incline.. And I got stuck.. How embarrassing it was getting stuck in my driveway.. I had to dig it out and drive it back into the garage.. A few inches of snow and some ice with the stock tires and it's a paperweight..
I didn't have to go rescue anyone.. Was just wanting to drive in the hood and see how it handled in the frozen wet stuff... Now I know to leave it parked..

Nope, those tires sure don't like cold, snow covered roads for sure.

Even with my "winter tires", I find my FR-S really quite light in the tail..... :eyebulge:

No offense taken. I'll spare you the sob story and details, but I've hit hard times so every penny goes to bills and food. I had to buy my wife new tires for her car so I'm SOL for a while. I know that every time I drive in the snow it's literally a coin toss, and I'm aware of the dangers it entails. I wish I had snow tires knowing what I know now, but I have to sack up and soldier on with what I got. I can only hope that if I go down I don't take anyone else out. I wanna say I'm a cautious driver when it comes to rain and snow.

No offense, but I watched that video and you had no business being on the road on those conditions if it was avoidable. You need to keep that car with those tires off the road as much as possible if you're going to be a danger to yourself and others.

I hope things turn around for you.

a lot of people in the south don't buy snow tires for the main fact it doesn't snow ever... and when snow actually falls we think it will be gone the next day and spending money on a set of tires that may never be used for more than a few hours or may never see use again till they dry up and start cracking. A good set of all seasons is great to have during the winter months. This winter sure has been rough though. I feel bad for Houston people who drive only on summer tires all year round to get hit by actual winter weather. I'm in Dallas and it MAY snow 4 times within a 10 year period. and 80% of the time it never sticks and just melts and drains away without re-freezing.

I was born in San Diego, raised in Houston, and married to a Mexican. I thought snow was a myth or was some kind of Hollywood trickery(sarcasm btw). All I can say is, I miss the South.

There's an episode of Spongebob where this squirrel sings about being in the ocean and remembering Texas. Same concept.

I will admit that I probably should have stayed at work the night it started, but the day after we really needed to get home. I was getting cabin fever and my wife works at a pet hotel/day care so Fido and Rover were starting to look appetizing.

dp1 02-14-2014 01:53 PM

Snow tires win every time when it's colder than 45F, or in snow, or on ice...wouldn't have it any other way...was able to drive around in NE every single day during recent bad weather. My cars have spare sets of wheels and only see summer and winter tires. Extra expense for a spare set but your car or life may be on the line...

If we see a snowflake in Houston we shutdown the city and we bust out the makeshift sleds. Even though we're sliding on concrete, its the best 5mm of snow we're ever gonna get. Where people up North aren't too concerned about snow and carry on, we do the same when it floods. We have it down to a T where we can ride the water to our next destination unscathed.

soo... would you spend money on a set of rims and winter tires to be used if where you live gets snow every 3-4 years? North Carolina where the OP lives doesnt see much snow unless you are in the mountains, is left with the same predicament as us southern guys.

No doubt. I live in Atlanta, and can't see myself buying snow tires. I got caught in the traffic mess a couple weeks ago. No real issues--the traffic didn't move, so I didn't lose control. Traction control kicked in a couple times when I back-tracked against traffic to my Mom's house (couldn't get home), and that was kinda cool.

Too be honest, I don't even know if I have on summer tires or all season tires. Just bought the car a month ago. Would dealers here put on all-season tires?

I didn't take a chance this week. Got home Monday night and kept the BRZ parked until today.

i live in pittsburgh and DD the brz. the primacys are SUMMER ONLY tires and are not meant for temperatures below 40F. That being said the compound gets too hard and the tread pattern is not what is needed for snow. I drive to work in 2-3 inches of snow commonly and never get stuck. Keep in mind this is traversing western pa geography which includes rolling hills. I drive on Ultra Grip ICE WRTs. They work excellent.

Nice music in the beginning.

ZionsWrath 02-14-2014 02:28 PM

I like when people drive in the snow with bad tires (for snow). Makes me feel like a rally driver passing them but in reality im just doing 50 in a dusting on the highway but they are doing 20 with their hazards on.

:burnrubber:

mkivalex 02-14-2014 02:43 PM

Lesson learned? Don't drive in snow without snow tires. This video looks like a pretty normal occurrence for us up here :)

mkivalex 02-14-2014 03:01 PM

I agree I still find with my Michelin X ice to still be VERY tail happy, and with a slight touch of the throttle it likes to slide.

I feel for the guys who haven't seen snow in forever/ever. My first real outing with the FRS I got stuck in a snow storm (with snow tires) and on the untouched roads I found the tail to be constantly kicking out, which I found a little scary. And I have driven a RWD supra in the winter with no nannies lol.

Since then I have become quite comfortable with the FRS in the snow and find it is a blast to drive in.

Stock tires are no no for any snow...

on WS70's the tail can be happy with improper throttle and steering input, but take it easy, know the cars limitation of grip and how to control it and you'll be fine. I climbed a huge hill last saturday in the snow, first time up had a bit of sideways slip, second time up, perfect.

we have a steering wheel? man ive been using the throttle to turn for almost 2 years now.... how could i have missed this

or

lol im too much of a hoonagin to not use improper throttle when it snows lol

in the rain aswell... i remember the first time i almost went sideways on the free way at 55mph when i went over the painted lines and my tires still had 60% life in them... So i proceeded to the closest drift track and burnt them off in 20 minutes time and put summer tires on the car lol...

That makes sense. Sounds like you were just in a tough situation. As a quick tip -- you can use craigslist or the classifieds on NASIOC to find used 5x100 wheels/tires for cheap. Getting snow tires would be the best, but even if you can only find all-seasons, that would be better than what you're using now. If you find a set of used tires/wheels, but need some help financially, send me a PM. :)

In the meantime, be careful out there. Try not to drive in the snow if possible.

wheelhaus 02-14-2014 03:37 PM

Snow tires transform the car. Too bad you guys in the southern regions won't really experience a proper snow drive, it's a boatload of fun...

Glad you made it safely. That whole area was slapped with a huge snow cock. Up here we'd laugh it off and carry on. hehe

There's your problem *facepalm*

With my snow tires, the car is good. Never have any problems with ice. Maybe a slip here and there but TRAC takes care of that. It's only the really deep stuff that this car can't do much about... Well, pretty much most cars can't do much about.

I still don't understand why people who get snow still opt to run the stock tires. Safety not a concern here?!

Well, Marchy, good memory; that's the reason I put "winter tires" in quotes. They are what I shall call my "winter tires" for the PNW, since I don't plan on going up to the mountains, we don't have that much snow down here next to the sound and I don't "have" to go anywhere on snow covered roads.

As you recalled proper, they are actually A/S tires with "some" snow capability (darn little, so I found out).

After taking a "spin" around the neighborhood after our last snow, I figured I probably could get out in an emergency ...... but, I'm jest getten chicken in ma elder years .... :(
