Potential new job across country. Looking at shipping options

First of all, I guarantee that this has been asked before, or at least something similar, so I apologize for that, but I have no idea what this is called to search for it (I searched "car shipping" but didn't get what I was looking for).

I live in WV and have a job interview for a position in CA on Thursday.

I am looking at my options on getting my car over there (safely, obviously), but have no idea where to start.

What do you guys suggest? Can you offer approx. pricing?

Thanks!

I'll need to double check my sources, but I've shipped my car(s) multiple times. I worked for a little while out in Cleveland, OH - if I'm not mistaken the one way trip (took about a week) was about $800 or so, one way, between Cleveland and Los Angeles.

Are you headed up to the Bay Area? I figure that the costs might be roughly the same. You'll be looking at sub-$1000 for uncovered delivery. Pricing really boils down to how much of a rush you're in, etc. I remember it was a bidding process among drivers who were going certain routes, carrying lots of cars, and I had to find one with a price and timing that matched my needs.

Good luck with your interview, and hope you come out to CA!

Thanks! The position is actually in Aliso Viejo in Orange County. And yea, I hope so too. These WV winters are killing me!

Why not just go on a long road trip?

Mulder 02-11-2014 07:14 PM

Yeah, I'd road trip it myself. If you've never driven across the country, it's a great experience! Just make sure to plan some neat stuff along the way. I've done 5 trips across the country, and Dad found great ways to make it interesting for us. One year we followed the Oregon Trail and saw the landmarks, another year we followed the Lewis and Clark trail. Stuff like that can make it quite a bit of fun.

Ship your stuff and drive the car instead!

It's not often you get a chance to drive one-way from coast to coast and wind up at home.

Sitha@ft86club 02-11-2014 07:38 PM

Road trip. I've only done one mini road trip in ny Frs from Seattle to Portland. Its the finest I've ever had with my car. Cheers

Road trip!!! Once in a lifetime opportunity...

LadyFRZ 02-11-2014 08:41 PM

Definitely on the "Road trip" bandwagon. :)
There's some gorgeous places in CA to drive, such as Pacific Coast Highway. Could be really nice before you start your new job.

Well, jonbonazza ...... congratulations on your up coming opportunity ....

Like many have said up above, this would be a great opportunity for a cross country road trip!

As far as shipping costs, the Internet is your friend.

WOW - I have lived in West Virginia and California ...... I don't blame you for wanting to get out of WV .... but be prepared transition shock.....:eyebulge:

Good luck with your interview. Oh, don't forget, he who brings up salary first .... loses ....http://www.runemasterstudios.com/gra...mages/wink.gif

I'm another vote for road tripping, my friend was in the business of transporting cars for people and I've seen a lot of shady and bad business practices used by these companies (driving your car instead of towing it, damage, etc), it opens up your baby to a higher probability of something bad happening :\

If you have to ship your car, send me a PM. I shipped my old car three time (twice inoperational) and learned a lot about the process. The broker I used was great - I've recommended him a number of times and everyone has been happy with him.

road trip for sure, thats a once in a lifetime thing

Doctor Who 02-12-2014 01:14 AM

I moved from NJ to AZ and road tripped out here. It was a great experience.

kavanagh 02-12-2014 01:25 AM

Drive baby, drive!
We've moved back and forth from the left coast to the right and back again probably 8-10 times. Drove very time and wouldn't trade it for the world. Even the time we had two cats and a black lab in the cab of a uhaul driving from NYC to Phoenix, it was still fun.

I have shipped my FRS from Los Angeles to Kansas, then Kansas back to Los Angeles for $750 each way, uncovered in on a trailer with 5-7 other cars.

They were really quick... it took less than 3 days for each trip

Seriously.

It's a hell of a drive, but you'll get to see some incredible places if you plan it right. The money you'd spending getting it shipped would be better spent on hotels and amenities.

AKBrrrrrrrrZ 02-12-2014 03:47 AM

Road trip it. You only have one life to live and after that you can say you've done it.

Soclose09 02-12-2014 06:12 AM

why would you ship the car when you can drive it? do it for the experience.

oh and I've shipped a few cars to and back from Houston to Sacramento it costed about $500 took 4 or 5 days. But that was after the road trips I've made back to cali lol. Kinda glad I left that state

Vincenttam 02-12-2014 06:21 AM

ROAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD TRIP!!!!! I'd like to give you a early pre welcome to cali for i a!!!!

Wolfking 02-12-2014 06:23 AM

Better man up and mount up! Good luck on the job!

Okay, so I need to get out there asap (no time to take the scenic route, unfortyunatly), so I will definitly be shipping. :/

Anyway, I checked out USHIP.com and the lowerst quote I found was 1350 >.< I mean, I can pay that if need be, but I'd rather find something a little cheaper.

Do you mind PMing me the info of the broker that you used? Thanks!

Since this is a job related moving expense it should be deductible.

That is true. I found a much more reasonable quote of $950, but it will take 2 days longer to arrive (worth it, in my book.)

leicaboss 02-24-2014 05:41 PM

Are you making it out to the best coast?

asianbob 02-24-2014 05:44 PM

Montway Auto Transport. Reasonable prices and insured while in possession of your vehicle. Also they have an enclosed trailer if it makes you feel better but it is an extra 400 bucks.
