Anybody fit REAL projectors in FR-S yet?

I don't mean morimoto..
Nothing against the TRS retros but I'm just curious if someone has done a different projector in the FR-S housing.

I mean like AP1 s2K, LS430, RX330s, TSX, etc.

You know.. the good stuff.

NemeGuero 02-07-2014 03:49 PM

anyone? anyone? bueller?

OrbitalEllipses 02-07-2014 04:02 PM

FWIW, the BRZ uses RX350 projectors from the factory if I'm not mistaken.

I was unaware that the twins came with FAKE projectors to begin with

Not fake per se, but he is referring to the fact that FRS projectors are designed for halogen bulbs and the people that throw an HID bulb in there are performing a ghetto and inefficient conversion.

lightdir 02-10-2014 01:00 AM

TRS is really the only game in town.

EAGLE5 02-10-2014 01:04 AM

In six years, brz hid lights will be stolen constantly.

speedrye 02-10-2014 06:28 AM

In the next few weeks, I'm hoping to stick some RX330 non-AFS projectors in mine using OEM Matsushita ballasts and some Philips 85122 bulbs. Time frame will depend on the weather cooperating for painting purposes and whether or not I need to tune the projectors too much.

While it's apart, I think I'm going to throw some HID projectors in the fogs as well, but I want to see how sharp the cutoff is once the bulbs come in. After that, I'll decide if I want to use the HID projectors or if I'll go with the OSRAM LED projectors.

TakeNoL 02-10-2014 11:08 AM

Does FX-Rs count as the good stuff?

sshole 02-10-2014 11:15 AM

FX-R is replica. Do they still suffer from laserbeams?

THIS!
Please let me know how it turns out.
If I can help making any kind of mounting brackets, let me know.

speedrye 02-10-2014 12:59 PM

I'm pretty sure these will be a direct bolt in. Literally unscrew the stock projectors and screw the new ones in (once sharpened/tuned), but we'll see... If I do need brackets, I'm pretty good with AutoCAD and getting things laser cut, but I'm hoping it won't come to that.

speedrye 02-26-2014 06:36 AM

Still needs tuning, but it's a good start. I'll post up a thread before too long. Ignore the light above the cutoff, that's just reflections from the cars:

NemeGuero 02-27-2014 08:43 PM

Direct bolt in like you suspected? I wonder if they'll bolt in to winjets..

speedrye 02-27-2014 09:24 PM

No idea yet, I'm still in the process of converting the lights to bi-xenon and tuning the beam pattern and shield. I'm just running these off my test bench.

In yet?

retrosmiths 03-28-2014 07:14 PM

I did a quick test with the FX-R's and Acura TL's, seems like they will fit with the proper mounting. Not an easy task, though.

Yup!

It wasn't a direct fit, but it was close enough to be an easy retrofit with a little Dremel action. I modified the projectors with a custom cutoff shield attached to a bi-xenon solenoid. The extra high beam doesn't hurt, especially when added to the HIRs that replaced the stock high beams. I'm still waiting on decent weather to get some pictures of the cutoff. Nice sharp cutoff with an awesome color band.

^ Where's that wall picture? :)

There is a guy in Australia that modifies the stock BRZ housing to fit S2000 projecters in there, he makes them look pretty wicked too, giving them red or green tinged eyes if you wish.

Not sure if he is doing this officially yet I've only seen his custom version in person once, but I do know he was doing it on request. I don't know this guy personally it was through the shop I get most of my work done on my cars.

NemeGuero 03-31-2014 11:16 AM

Do you have an email address for him?

Ugh why would you replace the BRZ bixenon projectors with single xenon units from a decade ago?
