Simple frs coolant question

Hi guys

So today I decided to check my coolant level on my frs and on the reservoir it was between the low and full mark when cold wich is good but here is where I'm not sure, I then decided to open the radiator cap to see if there was any coolant up to the filler neck and it wasn't, it seemed a bit low.

Is this normal? Mind you the weather here is -17 degrees Celsius

Thanks guys

According to the manual it says it should be between full and low when the car is cold. So that's normal. But it says if you're low or a little under fill it up to full. So it couldn't hurt to fill it up just make sure you get the OEM Toyota or Subaru super coolant aka the blue one. If you mix another color it shortens the lifespan.

I figure that if the level is at the proper place in the overflow tank ...... after the coolant warms up ...... it will be at the proper level in the radiator.

Not to worry.... ;)

Yes, back in the day, one could look into the top of the radiator and see if the core was covered with fluid. That's because the top portion of the radiator was the reserve "tank".

You're quite welcome.

And if you do add coolant to the tank, like @Danny86 mentioned, be sure it's the Toyota stuff that you add.

Some say it's OK to "top it off" (don't get it too diluted) with "distilled water", NOT to be confused with regular bottled water.

Distilled water can be purchased at hardware stores or some drug stores.

Happy Holidays!

Yeah I think it's best to go to subaru and get their Bleu coolant

^this. Yes it is. Some people complain that the bottle costs $30-40something, but honestly it lasts like forever. Toyoburu claims this super coolant lasts like 10 years or roughly 100k. Why would you not get it? :D

11 years and I think 137k miles. After that it's 7 years/70k Miles I think.

I topped mine off with distilled water while my blue mix is on order from Toyota because it was close to low. Probably will have to get a straw and suck out the distilled water when it arrives LOL

EDIT: Can anyone confirm if this is the super coolant you guys are talking about?
http://www.toyota.com/owners/web/pag...52&partNo=part

Found some off ebay for 16 bucks: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Toyo...-/310197176760

or Subaru's: http://www.fredbeansparts.com/subaru...e-coolant.html

Not the right stuff. I got mine off Amazon and the color should be blue on the front as you will see in the picture below. Part number is 00272-GTBC1.

This is what you are looking for and it's $38

Would it be possible to get a part number? Or confirm this link? http://www.fredbeansparts.com/subaru...e-coolant.html

I'd rather get Subaru's coolant because it's their engine (even though they probably have little to no difference :bonk:)

Looks like the same stuff, different label. Same mixture, same long life component. Unless this has free shipping, the price is close to the same. I'm sure they both share the same exact coolant and just slap their name on the case. Just make sure it's the 100,000+ mile blue coolant and I think you're good. If the price is too cheap, it most likely is the wrong one.

I also went with the Subaru version. Although I believe they are exactly the same.

Why not just go to subaru and get the coolant there instead of waiting for this one to come to your place?

:p

Because I have an FR-S and it's easy to have it shipped to my door! The nearest Subaru to me would make me spend the difference in gas.

Well, according to the MSDS the "good stuff" is less that 5% water, so you don't want to get it too diluted.

However, by you being in the Bay area, I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck with your "magic" straw .... http://www.runemasterstudios.com/gra...mages/wink.gif

It's too cold maybe that might affect the level

I'll check my level in the spring time when I do my oil change

Alright guys so I checked my coolant again today and it looks lower

Here's a picture

Before taking this picture I moved the car to park it and did not let the engine warm up and left it overnight after

But when I drive the car and it heats up the level goes all the way up to full so I'm confused

Oh well

DANG, Young_makaveli ...... relax ..... :)

The driver's manual says that the level should be between the "low" and "full" mark, when checked cold.

Your picture shows about where the level on my car is (cold).

Yes, when the coolant warms up ... it will expand and show a higher level (when the engine is hot).

Now, have another eggnog ..... and take a nap .... :D

Merry Christmas!
