Scion FR-S Turbo Hybrid Sedan Comes Into Focus

[Mods please leave as separate thread. - Hachi]

Motortrend dropped and article I thought was interesting.

http://www.motortrend.com/future/fut...es_into_focus/

"Yes folks, a turbo. But not just any turbo. Toyota will insist on a 2.0-liter turbo-boxer being bolted to a revised version of its tried and proven hybrid system, pumping out around 300 hp. In addition to a hybrid turbo powerplant, Toyota’s R&D department is currently testing in-wheel motors. Fitted at the front, they would make the four-door an all-wheel-drive sedan."

Yum. I started this in the FRS thread but I know some of you might not visit it. I thought it was and interesting read.

The mid-2012 launch of the Scion FR-S / Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ sent shockwaves around the motoring world. The twins, especially the Toyota, put reasonably priced rear-drive Japanese sports cars back on the map. GT86 suppliers have struggled to meet demand. Above, a rendering shows what a GT86 sedan could look like. So it’s no surprise the family will grow. Recent concepts have indicated at least a convertible and a possible shooting brake. But the big surprise will be under the hood.

First , Toyota unveiled the expected at the Geneva Motor Show: A convertible. Then Subaru showed a wagon BRZ concept in Tokyo. Now, the next piece of the puzzle is slowly coming into focus: a GT86-based four-door sedan. A source close to Toyota has divulged that Subaru’s Cross Sport provides telling hints of what the Toyota four-door will look like. “It’d be easy to bring the B-pillar forward, add a rear door and slant the rear roof section to create a viable sedan look,” said our source.

Bearing a development code of 734A, we’re told the GT86 sedan measures 187 inches long, 70 inches wide, 55.1 inches high. It rides on a 108.2-inch wheelbase. Making the car about the same size as Subaru’s current Legacy, the four-door will be 20.1 inches longer and 4 inches taller than the 86 overall, and its wheelbase 7.3 inches longer. Given the 86 sedan’s extra size and weight, the stock coupe’s 200-hp 2.0-liter boxer engine would need beefing up. A source tells us that in place of the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder would be a combination that was initially said to be impossible for the 86. Yes folks, a turbo. Fitted at the front, they would make the four-door an all-wheel-drive sedan.

However, rather than a full-time AWD set-up, the idea would be to employ this in-wheel motor system at the front-end to act like Honda’s SH-AWD system. In other words, the system would only engage when rear-end traction is broken to quickly restore stability. Of course, cost remains an important point for the R&D team. What will the market pay for expensive in-wheel motors and a hybrid-turbo powertrain-- more than $30,000 for the standard 2.0-liter turbo and upwards of $40,000 for the hybrid turbo AWD? Our source suggests Toyota will test the waters first, by introducing a 2.0-liter turbo sedan by late 2016. Depending on its success, it could follow this up with an AWD hybrid powertrain – in either the same car or a Lexus model.

I love the BRZ because of its simplicity. This frs sedan seems awfully complicated

Zaku 12-20-2013 01:38 PM

so it's basically a Toyota WRX? am I reading this right? and if it's the same size as the Legacy...that's pretty big that's a mid sized sedan right? I was hoping for something comparible to the coupe... like an Integra Sedan something along that size.

Agreed. Not sure I'd want to deal with a hybrid turbo.

NOPE NOPE NOPE

DarkSunrise 12-20-2013 01:46 PM

AWD, hybrid, turbo, sedan? 20" longer, 4" taller, 7" longer wheelbase? Probably 3000+ lbs?

I don't know how they could, in good conscience, call this an FR-S/86 sedan.

ShadowSeraph 12-20-2013 01:48 PM

yuck. IMO not a GT86 if it is made into a sedan/covertable or what have you..

Yeah - I am not seeing why Subaru would build competition for the WRX.

Other than admitting that they seriously screwed up on the WRX styling ;)

strat61caster 12-20-2013 01:56 PM

When pigs fly.

That drivetrain sounds like it belongs in the BMW/Toyota joint venture rather than an economical 86 sedan which would have to slot in well under $35k to have a chance in the N.A. market.

manonastick 12-20-2013 01:56 PM

it will be like the next toyota chaser lol

trekkie 12-20-2013 02:09 PM

i could care less about a sedan, but can see why they are doing it. Toyota has nothing in the 'fun sedan' model line up which is why I'm looking at the FR-S Monogram or elsewhere.

The hybrid AWD is interesting, I became a big believer of AWD sports cars when I used to have an Audi TT >10 years ago, and always wonder why more don't do that (outside cost)

Zaku 12-20-2013 02:20 PM

Even so, like look at how many midsized Sedans are out there. Is this what people really want? or they want a fun to drive RWD sedan that's a bit smaller. You know a 86 with usable back seats and two extra doors? lol not a AWD Hybrid WRX Legacy Sedan with Honda style 4WD.

and technically... anything on the 86 platform is kind of an 86, saying it's not is like saying the Levin isn't an 86 and the Trueno is the only one.

but honestly I think enthusiast thinking was something like, Oh 86 and 86 sedan like Integra and Integra sedan right? just RWD. Not... 86 Coupe, 86 hybrid turbo sedan awd....and another thing is that..

what is this going to cost us? cause it doesn't look like it's a corolla or Camry price, this looks like Lexus territory

CyberFormula 12-20-2013 02:21 PM

Perfect. A proper Japanese e46 m3 competitor

Maybe they won't sell many of them. If any at all. If Subaru can make some money by making them for Toyota I assume that's all that matters. It does seem to fit the Scion/Yota line up a lot better than the Subarus. If it doesn't have true AWD and it's styled a lot different it isn't direct competition to a WRX.

M-17 12-20-2013 02:26 PM

If Toyota can pull of a hybrid turbo, more specifically an electric turbo, then I'm all for it. The sedan version with all wheel drive wouldn't be bad to have, but I rather have a sports car. I mean that's the whole reason I've been interested in this car for so damn long.

CajunFRS 12-20-2013 02:27 PM

So many mixed emotions about this car. Lol!

TofuDelivery 12-20-2013 02:53 PM

this news is still too vague. i'll wait til they have something more official to announce. in the meantime, i'm happy with my FR-S

chaoskaze 12-20-2013 03:09 PM

I'm sure this will be under the wing of Lexus if it hits US market with a new name like FSX-300.

OICU812 12-20-2013 03:35 PM

All hate no mixed emotions here.

tennisfreak 12-20-2013 03:36 PM

Too bad they only indicated the turbo would be for the sedan.

Not interested in turbo sedan ME WANT TURBO 86 Coupe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

suaveflooder 12-20-2013 06:03 PM

wait, 300 (assuming crank) horsepower on a hybrid, PUMP powered car? I'll believe it when I see it, but I'm not holding my breath. 250 crank I could see.

wbradley 12-20-2013 06:15 PM

Technology like this sounds more likely to be Lexus or Supra for the first few years.

Really? If you want a current example of how this exact scenario plays out look at what happened over at MINI... somehow they got from the delightful and cheeky R53 to the flabby Countryman and bizarre Paceman within one generation. If the new F56 is any indication they show no signs of getting smaller, kind of a shame.

Kelbyat07 12-20-2013 09:28 PM

I'll be saving up for a different car thank you very much..

RRnold 12-20-2013 09:59 PM

:bellyroll: fuggin Toyota n Subaru. You guys sound like 2 indecisive chicks shopping at a the mall.

I knew the whole light weight, balance, low cost, RWD pitch wasn't gonna last long. Do they really think people are going to pay 40K for a Scion.

I'll be waiting for the Supra concept in Jan...

dave77 12-20-2013 11:35 PM

Kinda wish they would make it rwd

amaciose 12-20-2013 11:55 PM

I look at the front of the car and this is all I see

bunny86 12-21-2013 05:25 AM

I don''t know what you guys are getting so hot and bothered about. It seems that you don't quite get the Toyota philosophy of sharing components across a range of vehicles. The 86/FRS sedan will be a totally different vehicle to the simply stretched and turbocharged version that is being touted, I very much doubt it will even share the same name.

And of course once they have the longer wheelbase refined they can then increase the capacity to 2.5 litres, twincharge it (with the electric motors making a total of 350-400 bhp), bolt on a two seater, longer body and call it a Supra.

dori. 12-21-2013 10:04 AM

yeah you guys aren't thinking straight, if the base sedan comes with a turbo motor, BAM, easy engine swaps into the BRZ and FR-S.

these threads continue to amuse me, ya'll act as though Subaru will stop producing the coupes and make the sedans only or something...

gily25 12-21-2013 10:48 AM

If they make this it'll be the typical "I want a sports car but since I'll never drive spiritedly, only brag, give me all the lux options that'll weigh it down." Do we really need more of those kinds of cars? We already have plenty of BMW, Audi, Nissan, Lexus cars that weigh too much to be anything more than some prissy boy's showboat. Barf. I'll take a simple stage 1 bolt on accessory that my dealer can install with an updated OEM tune, keep all the schmuck options for people who have money but no driving heart.

reardrv 12-21-2013 11:32 AM

This thing is absolutely awful, I can't stand Toyota's hybrid everything BS. Give us the turbo motor and leave it at that! There not the only ones either. Has anyone heard of what Mitsubishi is going to do to the Evo? This shit drives me nuts, if you want to make something a hybrid then do it too the Rav4 or one of the trucks. You know, something that people actually want a hybrid version of. Leave the performance cars alone!

Jaylyons1 12-21-2013 02:47 PM

So much hate and disgust. If I was a sith, shit would be flying off the walls right now.

slicktop 12-21-2013 03:40 PM
