How often should I be waxing the car?

I use this stuff if it matters.

Well?

humfrz 12-01-2013 04:22 AM

Oh, a couple times a year should keep her looking good.

(providing you don't do something to take the old wax off)

Yep, once in the spring and once in the fall .....

After every other wash, assuming you wash every 2 weeks or so.
You should try a clay bar once though. Do half of your hood and feel the difference.
Mind blowing difference once you go full detailing. It's a slippery slope.

This. Every 6 months in normal conditions is sufficient.

There are some variables - car washing techniques you use, your car's exposure to the elements, etc etc.

I don't do claying like someone mentioned above. I just waxed my car last month.

All day err day

Never is often enough.

Modern paints require zero maintenance.

But, go ahead if you wish. Once you start you're stuck doing it forever, ironically because wax loses its shine quite quickly.

wax on...

wax off...

m.wood0213 12-01-2013 12:52 PM

Always clay before you do a full wax. I do it 4x a year. Then once a month or so I'll apply another layer to renew the protection. If you don't clay bar first before your first coat it can't bond to the paint and it won't last but 1 week.

I use Meguiar's Quick Detailer after each wash. It's a liquid spray.

Ryuu0u 12-01-2013 01:38 PM

One or twice every couple of months is what I usually do. Depends on the intervals of when I have to wash it.

Brndn704 12-01-2013 01:43 PM

In the summer time I wax about once a month. In the winter? Nah, fuck that, it's too cold.

What? You wax to protect the paint, not to make it shiny. You polish a car to make it shiny.

I want to see this modern pain that requires no maintenance. That means it doesn't get etched by acid rain or bird droppings, and resists all types of swirls.

wax lasts 3-5 months or so with proper wash methods. sealants last longer.
wax = not as much protection as sealant, but looks more shiny
sealant = more protection, still shiny, but not as much "pop"

if you want to strip all the wax off to apply new wax, use dish soap

Mikem53 12-01-2013 03:00 PM

Paint is sealed with layers of clearcoat.
Conventional wax was used to "feed" the paint.. But it's sealed now and just smears on the clearcoat.
The polymer based waxes bond with the clearcoat and last much longer..
Twice a year works for me.. I used to do the zaino thing.. But now use meguires NXT with great results..

gzpermadi 12-03-2013 03:21 AM

if I am not mistaken it is written in owner's manual to top up wax if needed.

alan.chalkley 12-03-2013 03:50 AM

I use Meguiars ultimate wash and wax at least once a month and Meguiars quik wax at least once every three months.
Never wash or wax in direct sunlight and always drive the car straight after washing and drying.
Always dab dry the car and don't drag a cloth along the paint.

David-Fermani.com 12-06-2013 10:31 AM

Get your car professionally Opti-Coated and you'll never have to wax it again.

DSlayerZX 12-07-2013 02:18 AM

you would still need to wash them though :P
and when it's really, really contiminated, you still need to clay them Orz

AVodka14 12-07-2013 03:09 AM

Personally, I wax one time per year--- before winter starts. That's all. I agree with other people's sentiments. Paint is well protected from the factory compared to decades ago. Keeping the car clean and garaged is more critical than waxing the car more frequently.

Pablitomarrero 12-12-2013 06:12 PM

opti coat once... and never wax again

kALMIGHTY 12-12-2013 06:19 PM

Opti-Guarded since the day I picked up my car 5 months. The car looks like it's been waxed and detailed even after just hosing it down with a pressure washer at home with nothing else! Really worth it.

HeubergerMotors 12-12-2013 06:30 PM

I say typically Every 2-3 months.

charged86 12-12-2013 07:16 PM

I wax every night before i go to bed

Apex-Wolf 12-12-2013 09:08 PM

Well on a new car I like to do it once a week for 3 weeks in a row then after that. once every 4 months
