Consumer Reports: BRZ review

Oh gawd, this'll be good

I can just see it now once they print it in their rag: the fuel economy isn't very good for a car this size. Controls were hard to use, and the backseat was too small.

Thanks, Consumer Reports.

Jeez, that guy could handle the car well, and he seemed to love driving it as much as he anticipated driving it.

ahausheer 04-17-2012 10:35 PM

Nice, didn't see much under-steer, or did I miss it? .

Sport-Tech 04-17-2012 10:51 PM

Consumer Reports test drives the BRZ (!)

Autoblog has the video here. It's really a test of its drifting, and the guy is pretty good at it.

Yea I was assuming he wasn't going to be a solid driver considering its for Consumer Report but he looks like he has a good handle on the car

I'm wondering the exact same thing. According to the real-time track comparison video between the FRS and BRZ, BRZ was found to understeer more and be less involving in terms of driving. But here, it seems to be very capable in terms of oversteering. My guess that he had a really do a lot more to induce the drift compared to an 86.

You can kind of see from the video that the drifts weren't smoothly maintained and there was a bit of tendency to straighten. But that's just my guess.

I'm sick of seeing reviews doing drifting all the time that's not why I buy the car for and I'm sure most of us as well...

lol i agree, but almost all RWD ads will have drifting (or burnouts in case of muscle cars)

MmmHamSandwich 04-17-2012 11:40 PM

Folks, Consumer Reports powerslid a car as part of a review.

Consumer Reports.

If that doesn't say something I don't know what will.

I never had a RWD car so. I guess I would not know how easy is to do drifting well hopefully I will find out soon enough how much fun is to drive a RWD car....

armythug 04-17-2012 11:57 PM

Nice review on how fun and easy it is to drift. And that reviewer seemed like a pretty good driver. :happy0180:

Bristecom 04-18-2012 12:08 AM

Interesting that he says the Miata will be quicker around the track. I was thinking the BRZ/FRS should be a little quicker.

Subaruwrxfan 04-18-2012 12:20 AM

Why aren't the DRLs on?

blu_ 04-18-2012 12:43 AM

I never thought i would see them judge a car on fun... even if it is a mini test.

Dimman 04-18-2012 01:02 AM

Do they roll it?

LOL... Like Chris Harris said "Treat all tires like they deserve to die."
Actually, the tire has plenty of grip and performs well.

At least the 86 won't threaten anyone's masculinity. http://i41.tinypic.com/67tt9z.gif

dsgerbc 04-18-2012 01:24 AM

I bet there's not gonna be anything about drifting in the actual CR journal article.

This has me confused... Are you referring to this line from the Autoblog copy?

Equally as important, the BRZ's stability control can be switched entirely off, enabling the kinds of power slides that are great fun but sure to place you last in your SCCA Solo II class behind all the Miatas, Z cars and E36 M3's.
If so, they're just saying that if all you do is power slide around, you won't be winning any races (since, though power slides are fun, they're also slow).

86design 04-18-2012 04:01 AM

I was waiting for consumer report to make a review on the BRZ hehe :D

The differences between the two cars are due to suspension tuning, not innate differences in the chassis because guess what, the chassis is the same. In the long-term anyone doing any suspension tuning, essentially anyone who replaces springs and dampers, doesn't really need to pay attention to handling differences between the two, IMO.

Because the fog lights/headlights are on. DRL's that are stand alone lamps will turn off when other lighting is turned on.

That is true and is most likely the cause. But I'm very much new to the car tuning. So I wouldn't know exactly what I'm doing if I change out the springs and dampers. It'll be nice to see what setups ppl use and probably a spring/damper sticky thread posted up.

csaba 04-19-2012 08:25 PM

im happy for you

ZetaVI 04-19-2012 09:02 PM

Kudos for nice driving skills. Oh how it convinced that I'm going to be great driver in the BRZ.
