What the heck are these?

I just know this is going to be one of those "you don't know what THOSE are?" moments,
but... what are the rectangles on the front of the GT86's? Not seen them on FR-S photos.

TIA.

Headlight washers. They're not on the FR-S because it would bring the cost up.

Edit: I think countries in Europe require these on all cars.

Saibot 04-10-2012 03:16 AM

WOW those are pretty cool! i didnt even know they existed LOL.

headlight washers are needed on HID in Europe and some Asia countries.

i don't think it's a requirement in US. and since FRS doesn't have HID, it won't have it anyway.

Sasquachulator 04-10-2012 03:31 AM

Luxury cars usually have them standard, its 'luxury' feature.
Older Saabs and i think maybe older volves even went so far as to have headlight wipers.

Thanks guys for the feedback!

I wish they were standard here in the southern US too... The bugs around this area can be horrific sometimes.

As others have said they are headlight washers. Required by law in many other countries (not the US) with H.I.D. headlights.

My '06 GTI with H.I.D.'s came with them but VW deleted them as well as other equipment for US cars from '07 and on to cut costs.

They still come on higher priced Euro cars (Porsche, BMW, Audi and MB)

So why specifically with HIDs?

I like the Japanese toilets.... So many opens. Fake flush sounds for ladies.... Extra strong flush for those heavy duty nights, lol....

Yea, headlight washers seem more suited for luxury cars. Sports cars should be about to dodge the rain drops, lol....

The washers are required for HID in Europe rather than regular halogen lights because the belief is that dirty-HIDs cause more light scatter and hence glare for on-coming drivers.

And to add to this - HIDs dont melt ice/snow that may form on the light housings. I noticed this after doing my first retrofit.

Additionally, they don't activate if you're just idle. If I recall, mines pop out and spray the headlights only if I'm going faster than 25mph.

They don't do that great of a job, it just sprays your headlamps with heated(in this case for Mercedes) washer solution. Think taking a spray and spraying it and letting the wind wipe it off.

Yep, FR-S doesn't have them for price reasons AND they aren't necessary in the US of A
