Rear BC BR coilover making noise
Hey guys after some help. Over the weekend i installed some BC BR coilovers to my ft86 and when i went for a test drive i am getting some knocking/clunk sound coming from both rears. I have gone over all bolts ect and also re-did the preload to 5mm but noise still persists. I can reproduce the noise by pushing up and down on the boot area but if i put the dampening to full soft it doesnt make the noise :S
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance |
i think this would be the pillow ball top mount

Diconnect rear sway bar links from sway bar ends zip tie and test drive and see if it goes silent.
This was my issue as links were bad and bolts stripped from factory. Lowering made them clunk. |
Or maybe it's the trunk noise issue just getting worst after lowering the car
|
It's definitely the Coilovers. Had these on my last car, so annoying. Eventually just removed them and sold them. I ended up buying the tarmacs for this car and don't suffer from any noises.
|
had bc's on my old mazda 3 and they were noisy
|
Would twisting the coilover to adjust height cause the top nut to loosen??
|
My KW's did this after a few hundred miles, the nut on the top mount backed off a bit. Take the rear coil off and see if the nut is loose. They can be annoying to get tight enough cause the strut will try and turn with the nut. Pretty sure that the mounts also have a dot indicating which side faces forward, if that makes any difference.
|
Still haven't figured out the issue. Spoke with the supplier and will be sending back the rears for inspection.
Its just wired that when I put one of the rears on full soft the noise goes away but as soon as I turn up the hardness it comes back :S Now I will waiting patiently to see what BC find wrong with the coils!! |
i'll be installing mine this week hoping i dont run into this issue :)
|
Great info in this thread. I'm chasing a clunking noise too, along w/ some rear instability @ the limit--I'll check the top nuts on the C/O & the sway bar links.
Thx gents... |
I doubt its your coilovers. I had BC's sold them and bought a new brand after trying several things including tightening the top nuts, and triple checking all torque specs.. even had my wrench calibrated.
My noise is still there with the new coilovers. adjusting dampers doesn't change my noise, nor does raising the car. The noise does go away with stock suspension, however. I have been underneath the car with a stethoscope searching for the source of the noise, I've made rubber gaskets for the top hats, over tightened the LCA bolt, disconnected the coilover and checked through the range of motion to see if it was something interfering.. Nothing. I'm waiting to try subframe spacers and see if that cures me. |
Installed some rear sub-frame bushes to see if that would fix the noise on the rear...did not help at all!! I have ran out of ideas :(
|
I hope we can figure it out. I'm going to order these soon. Any news?
|
any updates?
|
put on your favorite song and turn the radio volume to 50 and the noise will be gone I promise
|
i just tell my self thats what you get for driving a slammed car and suck it up !
|
I have no issue with the noise but would be nice to figure out where its coming from! I will be taking my car in for a wheel alignment tomorrow and will be getting them to inspect the suspension.
|
Got a wheel alignment yesterday. The guys spent some time looking over the rear section of the car but did not find anything wrong.
Another note is when these vehicles are lowered they produce quite a bit of toe in the rear and front... Alignment is a must! |
End links folks...you need adjustable end links. I have the same issue.
When you lower the car the stock end links are manufactured for stock height. When the car is settled on level ground the connection between the end link and the roll bar should be loose(no pre-load). You should be able to climb under the car and remove the end links with ease. When you lower the car below stock height the car is sitting lower and loading up the swaybar and end link. The threaded rod of the end link where it attaches to the roll bar is now pointing in a downward position is if the car is going over a bump(suspension goes up over bumps). Since you've removed the little travel you had the end link bottoms out over bumps and that is the knock you are hearing. The end link can't move down any higher so now the full weight of your car slams on the threaded rod of the end link eventually giving way. Buy some adjustable end links. Have someone your weight sit in the driver seat and adjust and install the links so that they fit without being pressured in. NO PRELOAD! |
When I did the install I left the stock end links in the front and I don't get any knocking. The noise I am getting is coming from the rear.. Would I need adjustable rear end links??

i talked to a few guys with BC and all whom used the stock endlinks and have no clunking up front, while mine clunks now (using the endlinks provided ) |

Mine clunk in the rear and not in the front. |
I've disconnected my sway bar and still get the clunk. I wouldn't blame it on endlinks.
Try disconnecting yours and see if the noise goes away for you. |
Any updates here? im getting the clunking noise and tried disconnecting my sway bar. didnt help at all. im getting frustrated. all the bolts are tight. I have checked about 10 times over the past 2 weeks...

This crap is crazy I get the same symptoms!:mad0259: but we pay the price for looking good lmaooo

I've got the bc v1 series track edition also making lots of clunking noises. called the supplier and did warn me that they were noisy. after hearing those clunky noises after installation i emailed them again, and they replied those were what they warned me about. these were straight out of the box.
|
I bought my BC BR last summer, after few hundred miles i had the same issue.
Any updates or solutions ? |
Man, was hoping there'd be an answer here. The owner of the performance shop here that did my alignment checked mine out and couldn't find anything. Said it *might* be the aftermarket toe rods (mine are Voodoo-13) but other than that, he said I might just need to get different coilovers.
|
Ive had this problem as well. Talked to them at BC and I have to take pictures of my coils and send to them so they can see if it was installation error
|
From my reading this isn't limited to just BC's. I have clunky rear Megan coilovers. I've gone over everything and have found nothing loose.
(Then again, Megan's and BC's probably come from the same place anyway.) |
I'll be sure to follow this thread... I just installed a set lol, car goes to the alignment rack tomorrow.
|
I just installed a set of BCs today. Only slight knocking in the rear. And I mean slight, I'm super picky so in all reality it is probably not even noticeable.
