New cars produced still suffering from first year issues?

I've posted this already in a couple of already existing threads, so apologies if you see this twice. I believe a new thread will draw the most attention and will hopefully be useful to those in a similar situation.

I'm just wondering if the newer cars coming out of production still suffer from the many first year issues reported by early purchasers.

If anyone has purchased a car in the past few months or has any feedback, I and I'm sure many prospective buyers would be very appreciative.

Nothing has changed since this thread 2 weeks ago. Although I would retract my prior statement in that you should have no worries if you plan on keeping your car stock and you're buying new, no matter what kind of abuse you're going to throw at it.

My son bought an FR-S in July. He now has 3200+ miles on it and has had zero issues. Not even a cricket. Car is daily driver and weekend ridge runner. It is stock except for TRD catback.

suaveflooder 09-13-2013 06:56 PM

Had mine since February. It's a late January build. No issues other than crickets occasionally. They are becoming more and more rare. When I bought it, they were consistent when the car was warmed up.

kALMIGHTY 09-13-2013 09:43 PM

I've had mine since late July, build date was in May, I think. No crickets, chirping, or anything like that. It's going great and it's my daily driver.

Panda Grahams 09-13-2013 09:53 PM

Bought mine in February, late January build. I had crickets about 300 miles in. However, no it's on and off depending on the weather. Other than the mild annoyance of the crickets, I've had no problems at all. Loving this car more and more every single day.

TRD exhaust is only axle back I believe.

I have a 10 series july build have 1100 miles and I just noticed the crickets.

Also I been having this thunk noise when shifting to 1st gear on a deadstop. Has anyone have or heard of a similar complaint?

ravenblackfrs 09-13-2013 09:56 PM

Bought mine Sep 2012. NO ISSUES. *knock on wood Has 14k miles on it. It mostly sits at home while I'm on the road for business.

No, the TRD is definitely a catback.

Cat back. I installed it. This is the USDM version with the D shaped tips.

JonAvalon 09-13-2013 10:25 PM

Got mine in June, came straight from the port. Had crickets almost since the beginning. But otherwise that's about it.

Got any pics? All signs I see points to axle back. Looked at a couple I stalled and I swear it looks like an axle back. I have a trd exhaust! Lol

Yes, I get this on my MT BRZ. Has happened since I got it. Hoping it's not an issue...

Does it on my AT when I drive it hard and put it in park after coming to a stop. I place it in park and before I can turn the car off it does it. Weird, not sure what it is.

When you clutch in, wait a moment longer with stick in neutral before pushing shifter into 1st if you don't want to hear the clunk. This gives the input shaft a chance to spin down. In essence you're matching the input shaft to the tranny, which is at 0 rpm.

SillySaxon 09-16-2013 02:38 PM

10 series built 06/13
Has over 2500 miles
Crickets started at around 800 miles
Still has them

I did notice that when my fuel light is on the crickets are REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING AND LOUD, but it goes away on colder days.

I always use 93 octane if I can.
Sometimes I use 92 (weird I know)

jonbonazza 09-16-2013 03:10 PM

Bout my car in may, but it is technically a Dec 12 build date (If I remember correctly). At 3k miles I hear crickets. Other than that, no issues, whatsoever.

^What he said.

I noticed the 1st gear thud the first day of having my BRZ. Read other threads about this, and it was theorized as driveshaft synchronization. Suggestion, as root stated, was hold clutch in slightly longer. Did that and I no longer thuds shifting into first. Common on all FT86's.

Oh, and May 2013 build with no issues except loud crickets. Not a single rattle as others have complained about.

BirdTRD 09-20-2013 08:48 AM

I sure hope they got all the first year bugs worked out, my 2014 is on it's way :happyanim: Should be driving it in 2 weeks!

Rampage 09-20-2013 01:03 PM

Congratz. It seems like most of the big issues have been quietly addressed by Toyota/Subaru in the later 2013 models. Your 2014 should be even better.

2014 doesn't get delivered until October...

May 2013 mfg date purchased August 2,2013, 10 series FR-S, crickets began at exactly 2400 miles. Spent yesterday morning at the dealership and it wouldn't do it when they pulled it in 1 hour after I got there. It was quiet all day. This morning when it warmed up it came back with a vengeance. They told me when it happens again drive straight there and they'll get it in. The regional service rep told them that the problem was fixed. The service writer was standing right there when I pulled up and heard the noise. He told the rep that it has not been fixed on my car at manufacture, so the rep wants them to be absolutely sure it is the high pressure fuel pump. Then he will be in contact with Toyota America. I'm hoping to get it to them Saturday morning first thing.

October is in less than two weeks. This guy: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47252 says he is getting his 2014 today. They must be ahead of schedule.

Link states October 31st delivery which last I checked was closer to 6 weeks away...

dehydratedH2O 09-20-2013 04:00 PM

I ordered my BRZ last week.

From the current pipeline status:
Status Scheduled
Current Location 200007
Estimated Arrival 10/21/2013
Scheduled Date 10/10/2013

BirdTRD 09-21-2013 09:32 AM

When I ordered it last week they told me it would take +8 weeks to get it. Got a call from the sales guy 2 days ago, (mysteriously within 2 hours of test driving a Genesis Coupe at their sister dealership) and he told me he had one diverted from Tennessee and would be here in 2 weeks. We'll see. I'll post back the day I actually get it. This will be a good "credibility" test for my dealer! :)

Mine's a June 2013 build, now has 2,500km on the clock. She's been 99.9% awesome and problem-free. Only a handful of minor issues come to mind:

a) I'm not sure if I'm just stupid but I can never seem to get the window to do what I want it to do (it will roll all the way up or down when I've just given it a fast click hoping for a minor adjustment).

b) Hoping the shifting into 1st and 2nd while cold will improve over time (probably should swap out the gearbox oil to something better). Thank you to the dude above who explained the diff clunk when you put it into 1st, you do learn something every day!

c) iPhone 4S occasionally won't play music across the blue tooth connection, and the lady who sounds like Siri in the head unit keeps telling me I'm speeding. Because race car.

d) I think I heard a few pops from the rear parcel shelf in the last couple of days, guess it's time to buy some WD40?

e) My wife had a drive yesterday on a fun back road. She was having so much fun she stalled it at the first roundabout we had to stop at (she says it's so easy to drive she forgot it was a MT!).

f) My dad had a drive last weekend, he's 73 now and he had a little trouble getting in and out (I'm still working on exiting gracefully). I caught him sitting and admiring the car the other day, so decided to take him out for a spin. He didn't want to drive the car but I talked him into it, great times ensued. You should have seen the smile on his face.

g) There has been a waiting list of friends and family who want to go for a cruise. It's not easy but someone has to do it.

Young_makaveli 09-22-2013 07:32 PM

Got my frs a month ago and to this day i have no issues (fingers crossed) ..no crickets no oil leak at the engine plate
