Pressing/releasing clutch pedal - audible click sound (not the clutchs switch

Anybody notice this?

There's a click sound that comes and go that started to appear about week four with the car. Can't describe how loud it is but it's definitely a lot lot louder than that other faint click which most likely is the clutch switch (which I believe is used to detect if the clutch is depressed so the car can be started or to turn off the cruise control if it's in use).

This louder click seems to occur around the midpoint of the clutch pedal travel, either being depressed or released. It comes and go.

I'll bring it up when the car goes in for it's first oil change but that won't be anytime in the near future.

Would be interesting to see what the dealership says about this with the BRZ.

My 2011 WRX did this same thing. Went on and off but would make a tiny click sound when pushing in or letting out.

I have this noise too, but have not discussed it with the dealer yet. I test-drove a FRS and a BRZ before I purchased and both did this. I figured its normal.

Does this occur only when the clutch is pushed in or released or do you also hear this when letting off and on the throttle quickly? This almost sounds like the CV joint

I'm having the same issue. I'm asking the dealer on my next service.

This happens regardless of what I'm doing. Actually shifting into another gear. At a stop light and in neutral. Car's off and I'm just pushing/depressing the clutch pedal.

Again, the sound comes and go, it's not consistent but it's occurring around the midpoint of the clutch pedal travel regardless if I'm depressing or releasing the clutch.

Problem is, like any dealer, for them to diagnose the issue the issue needs to be duplicated easily and since this comes and goes, it'll be a difficult one to point out. I guess you could try and record a video with the sound happening and show it to them which may help them to look into it.

Did look at an exploded view of the clutch pedal mechanism, could be anything right now on what's causing that click.

Well if its happening when the car is stationary and you are pressing and releasing the clutch pedal then it's definitely not the CV joint.

I have this but I don't care. Turn on the radio and :burnrubber:

Just sounds like some kind of switch doesn't seem at all like something to be worried about so I don't...

Stierzy34 08-31-2013 11:14 AM

Hmmm, after reading this thread I made sure I listened closely last night while driving the BRZ. It does the same thing that the WRX did. Maybe I just tuned it out so much I didn't even notice it!

gatorbushmen 09-19-2013 01:21 AM

Yea I just noticed the sound..... Has anything been figured out?

dehydratedH2O 09-19-2013 05:39 PM

I signed up for these forums just because I've had this problem before (and my BRZ comes in next month ). On my 8th gen Civic, I got these exact noises from the clutch pedal. Apparently, cheaper cars these days use plastic clutch master cylinders that are prone to cracking/breaking. When that happens, the grease in the internal springs/bearings seeps out and causes it to start making noises. The Civic community fixed it by replacing the CMC with a metal one, or filled up the broken ones with white lithium grease as a temporary fix. For those of you with this noise, I'd bet asking your dealer to inspect the CMC will turn up a broken/cracked one and get you a replacement under warranty.

Mine makes a "Zzzzt!" sound when I let out the clutch and get on the gas quickly...
Hope it's normal...

Neekowahhhh 09-20-2013 01:15 PM

Pretty sure this is normal.. My rsx did the same thing.. So did my xb(yea.. Manual toaster)..

I have this too, it sounds like it's coming from the clutch pedal, it's sounds more harsher than a click though. Like a few clicks simultaneously. I was wondering if it was an issue that should be brought up since I'm going to bring it to the dealer soon, I also have crickets.. I don't know if they'll do anything about them though but sounds like I have bad belts.

chenshuo 09-21-2013 12:12 AM

i have the click sound when i release the brake pedal. I took it in to the dealer and they checked and saw nothing wrong.

B-R-Z 09-22-2013 11:35 AM

Maybe this is the sensor that let's the car know the pedal is engaged?

I believe there is an assist spring assembly in the clutch linkage. I would
Look into that being the source of your noise.. The switch is right there at the top of the pedal.. Stick Your head down there and push the pedal in and listen for the spring noise.

I noticed that when I press on it while not moving it's fine. It's when I'm switching gears and moving that's why it's a bit odd.

I have this same noise. Its off and on. With the windows down and the radio off I can hear it for sure. It seems like right as I let off the clutch and go to give the car power I hear this noise. Next time I am at the dealer, I will bring it to there attention.

Keep us updated, I'm going to make a dealer stop soon and wanna talk to them about it but if I can't replicate it, it's pretty pointless. I also noticed that sometimes when I don't even clutch and just let go of the gas and press it again it makes the same exact noise. So if the noise I'm hearing is the same you guys are talking about it's probably more towards the gas pedal than the clutch.

jay_ 06-01-2014 05:17 PM

Any update on this? My brz is only couple months old and ive noticed when im starting from a stop, releasing yhr clutch with gas would make this zzzzzz noise. It is not consistent but usually happen when im starting on an incline going uphill. Anyone got any clue? Help a fellow brother out

Turbo95eg6 06-01-2014 07:31 PM

No, depends on the type of clicking.

If it sounds like that, it can be fixed. Some times it comes back for me, but it's the one bolt there that makes a noise. I just adjust it as I hear it come back

jay_ 06-03-2014 12:46 AM

im not sure if its that popping sound. my sound only occur when my car is on

Kostamojen 06-03-2014 03:53 AM

I have a similar sound. I figured out where it comes from, but I haven't fixed it yet. Its kind of a combo click/rattle when engaging/letting up the clutch pedal.

Anyway, where the clutch "piston" goes into the master cylinder, there is a thin metal O plate than sits around the pin and just inside the master cylinder. When engaging the pedal, it takes pressure off this place and it moves slightly in the space that it has and rattles. I'm going to try and get it fixed eventually, but its very off/on and I think some grease in there might quiet it up, something to keep it from shifting around so much.

ashtray 06-03-2014 05:19 PM

I had this on another car - isolated the sound to be coming from my left knee. Yes kids, one day your body will crack and creek when you move your joints! :)

unsurety 06-03-2014 08:24 PM

I tried the fix that @trevorovert posted and it muffled the sound a decent amount. It's still there though, just gonna live with it or loosen it up a bit.
