Have you stripped some weight off your FRS?

I don't own one yet but I am planing to do so soon. I am curious to know if any of you have made any modifications to strip some weight off the car. If so, what kind of modifications have you made and how much did it cost you roughly?

Kelbyat07 08-14-2013 03:01 PM

Aftermarket exhaust

velin86 08-14-2013 03:03 PM

Stripping weight is free.....Get rid of interior liner and spare tire or back seats if you wanna go racecar.

gt8613 08-14-2013 03:26 PM

I understand FRS has aluminum in it but I think handcrafted carbonfiber is still lighter ( by a small margin?) Also lighter wheels? (although the stock are quite light), lighter seats and more carbon fiber through the interior to loose more weight. I was wondering if anyone has gone that route ad if it was worth it.

Ran a few miles and lost 2 pounds. Best way to strip some weight off my car.

finch1750 08-14-2013 03:36 PM

Exhaust, brakes, spare tire, seats, wheels are all good places to start. Check some autox build threads for good ideas on shedding weight.

buzznasa 08-14-2013 03:44 PM

The gym...

DarkSunrise 08-14-2013 03:47 PM

Very basic plan for losing weight in the FR-S:

Perrin CBE - 10 lbs. (R)
Borla UEL - 10 lbs. (F)
Spare tire and tools - 30 lbs. (R)
Lighweight battery - 20 lbs. (F)
Robispec Front LCA's - 6 lbs. (F)

Total weight loss - 76 lbs.

bkblitzed 08-14-2013 04:11 PM

rear seats im guessing weigh around 15 lbs?

oldpueblo 08-14-2013 06:39 PM

I used a fitbit to drop 15 pounds. :)

dro 08-14-2013 07:08 PM

Going to the gym as we speak

the weight got converted to muscle

Wise 08-14-2013 08:40 PM

10 kg.

By removing the spare tire... around my belly lol.

Luis_GT 08-14-2013 08:56 PM

I've added weight...

John.Hong 08-14-2013 09:02 PM

Muffler delete with a nameless performance or berk track pipe sheds 23lbs off the rear in like 5 minutes and $100. Rear seats I believe with base and back weighs around 63 pounds. Spare tire and tools what not lose upto 40 lbs i believe. So for about $100, you shed upto 150lbs. Also cf parts on the exterior of our car dont do much since everything is lightweight. cf doors might help but our factory hood weighs equal to or less than aftermarket hoods so dont waste your money there.

dem00n 08-14-2013 10:24 PM

The Visconti flex fuel kit burns all the fat from the car.

Heh...

Instant weight loss into a 10 min car :bellyroll:

But yeah driver weight loss and getting a Ti exhaust would help and a CF driveshaft. gutting your interior would help if you want to be drastic

dem00n 08-14-2013 11:04 PM

Honestly, take a look at your battery boys.

You could save some weight with those lightweight batteries that go for mucho $$$$.

Lithium ion? Something like that.

FRSBRZGT86FAN 08-14-2013 11:05 PM

But anyway, I heard someone was able to equal the mt times at an autocross track with an at car and equal the 0-60 times, by pulling out the spare tire and tool kit. Brakes with stainless steel line, wheels and tires would be another good way to lose the weight. FT86 speedfactory makes a very nice lightweight braille battery, but its not the best idea if you live in cold climates or use the car as a Daily driver in those cold climates. A full exhaust with headers if you can emissions allowing. PST makes a nice carbon fiber driveshaft or an aluminum one from another source can be close to the same weight as the carbon fiber one. A full pulley kit from say Go fast bits will take some rotational mass off the front end. If you're willing to go really hardcore you can pull the rear seats and put in a lightweight fly wheel in because apparently a heavy percentage of weight is in that flywheel and it would really help make this engine even more rev happy. Others here can elaborate other techniques, but by doing all that you could easily take 100+ lbs of the car, and even better gas mileage and what not is gained along with handling.

WolfsFang 08-14-2013 11:15 PM

My weight savings are muffler delete, lightweight crank pulley, spare tire removed, stripped everything from backseats to trunk, and 16' forged wheels. Don't think I can lose weight myself or the wind would take me away.

Those are pretty big numbers. Rear seats weigh in around 20. Spare and tools in trunks weigh 30. And the rear muffler weighs 23, so unless your track pipe is weightless that can't be accurate.

oh wow. Thanks for correcting me. i thought i read somewhere the rear seats completely off is like 60 lbs. whoops lol :bonk:

f0rge 08-15-2013 02:02 PM

What about the seats? Swap in some $$$$ CF racing seats I'm sure you'd save some weight.

Aluminum monoblock brake calipers and 2 piece rotors is another expensive option.

Removing the stereo would also help.

Replace: wheels, tires, brakes, lug nuts, battery, driver's seat, glass with lexan, aluminum and plastic body panels with carbon fiber, pulleys, headers, front pipe, exhaust, steering wheel, coilovers may be lighter (not sure though)

Remove: spare tire, jack, all other seats, bumper beams, wipers, wiper fluid reservoir, A/C, sound system, dash, the center piece thing that covers your shifter and e-brake area, shifter boot, e-brake lever plastic, upholstery, fat, poop, pee, hair, clothing, shoes, eyewear, heavy thoughts, appendix, spleen, majority of intestines, teeth, every other finger, least favorite eyeball, and... if you're serious... castration

Other: acid dip your chassis, always drive dehydrated, only put the exact amount of gas you plan to burn in your tank, drill holes in everything

That's all I can think of right now, but that should be enough to get you started. If you need some more ideas when you're done with all this, send me a bottle of Stolichnaya, and I'll come up with all sorts of ingenious ideas.

Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere. ACBC

well this started good but got crazy near the end lol. Lost me at "pee."

Anthony 08-16-2013 01:04 AM

Correction: this started out good, then got better.

Glad you held on through fat and poop though. I appreciate it.

Yea I picked back up on "dehydrated" then laughed at "drill holes in everything," then struggled through the rest

If you remove the chassis it's hella fast.
