Official Component Weights & Weight Reduction Thread

Hi Guys,
I'd like to start an official weight reduction thread. I put it in this section because I figured most people interested in weight reduction were going to be those tracking their car. If the mods deem it more appropriate elsewhere, by all means please move it.

I'd like to break it up by vehicle area, and hopefully come back and consolidate the data occasionally so it's all in one place. I've broken it up along the same lines as the forum is segmented. I'm thinking we can collect all OEM data here, as well as weights for aftermarket parts. That way people can quickly reference it to make decisions when making modifications, without having to dig all over the place in separate areas of the forum.

I'll start it off with some data we've gathered on the OEM components. I have more on the way as we pull our project car BRZ apart. I took all weights on one of our postal scales, and have included photo validation where possible. I'd encourage everyone else to do the same to prevent discrepancies and arguments. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

Great thread. We found similar results. Removing jack, tools, spare tire, rear seat back, rear seat bases, rear trunk mat & pass floor mat dropped 70 lbs.

good work,
light weight battery and spare removal are an easy practical start for an almost 30kg drop. half way to a noticeable gain, i.e. a passenger..

The below Comment is just an observation, not directed towards any person or groups of persons.

I've always found it humorous when you get someone worried about shaving every last ounce from a vehicle but they don't have any issue with ordering the Super Sized fries with an Extra large shake when they go out for their mid-morning snack.

Point of example: Back when I first got into AutoX'ing my xA there was a guy who swapped a bunch of smaller items (Like the stock stereo) to save about 4 LBS. He proceeded to tell us that if we didn't do likewise we were putting ourselves at a disadvantage because our vehicles weighed more. Meanwhile this guy must have weighed at least 250 lbs and ate like a ravenous goat.

My point being yes, weight savings is a good thing, but you have to look at it as a % of the vehicles running weight with driver. If you weigh 250 lbs removing 4lbs is not going to have as much of an effect as the same weight reduction for someone who weighs 150 lbs. Or to quote someone else in that thread "You would shave more weight by going on a diet than getting rid of your Stock Headunit"

Anyways crimespree's comment about a "noticeable gain" made me remember that thread.

We dropped 25 lbs. with our lightweight lithium-ion battery. We're finishing up a custom mount for it now. I'll add a pic and weight to my pics above. Race buckets are going to be another very nice reduction. I weighed an old Sparco Roadster seat that I had in my Z06...weighed in at 16 lbs. for the fiberglass version. We're making some custom lightweight aluminum seat rails that will only be a few pounds. Overall, a 20lb. drop in seat weight (per side) seems likely...so that's another 40 lbs. that can be shed.

It shouldn't be a big problem to get down into the 2550 lbs. range without ripping the car to shreds. That's about what my '98 Integra Type R weighed, and that car had very similar HP. These cars are going to be very lively at that fighting weight, even on a stock (and reliable) engine. Therein lies the beauty. I keep telling myself that this is going to be the RWD Type R I always wanted, or what I wish my NA Miata was...a particularly nice balance of power and weight.

big props to JRitt for this amazing thread, i can see the parts and proof of the weight claims, really a master piece of information if you take your 2751lbs number for a stock full tank of gas you can achieve 2550 or lower pretty easily and have a blast with it at that weight this really has solidified my desicion on getting this car i'm eagerly waiting from the call from my local dealer to pick it up i can't wait...

i know this car was no designed to drag and I actually don't visit the drag strip much, but i can see how i can have a good night with some decent times at one with just some simple weight reduction and just run with 1/4 tank of gas and not even have any engine modifications

Thanks guys! I'm glad it is so helpful.

It ain't cheap, but it knocks 25 lbs. off the nose in 5 minutes, lowers the center of gravity, and improves front to rear weight balance. There's not much else on the car that can do that so easily! We're almost done with our custom mount for it. It's going to be a slick, lightweight little aluminum unit.

I doubt we'll be pulling the tires anytime soon...at least not until we shred the stock tires. We'll be using aftermarket wheels/tires. Sorry!

Great start to a weight savings thread.

As a side note, it's rather interesting that it's a BRZ being the candidate. If you are going to start removing and replacing stuff (such as the seats) anyway, why not just buy the cheaper FR-S? What makes the BRZ more valuable over the FR-S as some would say, would be that extra stuff that you are gutting out.
