Cant see the top of my tach...

Anyone else run into the issue where you can not see the top of your tachometer with your current seating position??

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3691/9...005884e4_z.jpge

I have the steering wheel as low as it goes -- Drop it like it's hot -- and my seat relatively close, as I like to almost be on top of the steering wheel. During spirited driving, it can be an issue, but the shift light does help. For reference I am 6'4".

Has this happened to anyone else??

EDIT: after looking at the photo, my perspective isn't nearly as bad as it shows. But I did readjust slightly after reading some of the feedback and I now have the seat slightly more reclined and the wheel a notch higher. Tach is just barely hidden at the top of the arch. Thanks for all the discussion!

Cheers!:happy0180:

Raise the wheel a bit? "Drop it like it's hot" makes it sound as if the appearance matters more than seeing the tach.

supramkivtt2jz 07-25-2013 04:56 PM

im 6'4" and i have no problems....

my only complaint is that i have to do the gangsta lean when i autocross because of having no head room to accomodate a helmet

SpyderDan 07-25-2013 04:59 PM

The steering wheel elevates and telescopes. Raise it so that it frames your dash cluster, and telescope it out to your preference.

The only problem I see here is your choice to "drop it like its hot", I guess because you think that is cool somehow, rather than an accessibility feature designed for people much shorter than you are.

MadFRS 07-25-2013 05:00 PM

Has nothing to do with being cool...

Just like to be on-top of the steering wheel more, and like it to be lower. Guess I am the only one that prefers it that way

m.wood0213 07-25-2013 05:01 PM

Im 6'3" and I have no problem seeing my tach just raise the steering wheel. I tried to lower mine and my knees hit it. maybe put a little lean and you shouldnt have any problem.

kALMIGHTY 07-25-2013 05:02 PM

Agree with the others. It seems like you're creating this problem for yourself rather than the car itself giving you a problem.
Lower your seat, raise the wheel, adjust your seating position.
Don't worry, no one's going to notice how high your steering wheel is, so they won't know you're not a real gangsta.

Are you coming from a huge lifted 4x4 truck?

Shagaliscious 07-25-2013 05:10 PM

You shouldn't be sitting on top of your steering wheel. Another member shared this video a while ago and I found this seating position perfect for me.

HAHA!! No, but I have gone muddin' if that counts.

The steering wheel is all I can afford to drop right now.

I thought a bit of Snoop Dogg would be good. But ever since he started making Jamaican music, it has been downhill. Snoop Lion - I think it is now.

Great Video...good find!

Thanks, I will definitely check out my position and see how out of line it is.

kALMIGHTY 07-25-2013 05:14 PM

If you want your car to feel lower, wouldn't you want to RAISE your steering wheel so it looks like you're sitting much lower in the car? I'd imagine having a low steering wheel and being above it would make you feel like you're sitting in a bus.

MadFRS 07-25-2013 05:19 PM

I think its more to do with a long torso and long arms, not a good combo. I have the seat as low as it goes and back pretty far, along with the steering wheel lowish. Still feels like I am hugging the road, which I image is a reason a lot of us like this car. I love feeling like I am low and in control of the car.

It telescopes? Wtf I never knew that. I'll have to check that out when I get home.

That and other mysteries can be learned from the owners manual. No need to go to wizard school to learn those secrets.

fatoni 07-25-2013 05:46 PM

i cant imagine being able to heel-toe with the wheel between the knees. my miatas dont have tilt or telescope and if im wearing my shoes it can give me some serious hip pain

Well apparently I need a wizard... Looks like this is a GT86 or FRS only feature. The BRZ manual says vertical and horizontal only.

Wait I'm an idiot. Horizontal I guess is telescopic...

Disregard!

I've got a similar setup. I'm 6'3" and yes the wheel tilts & telescopes, but not enough for my tastes. So to get to the comfortable position that I prefer, the wheel does get places at the furthest out and down position and ends up looking like your setup.

Nope that was the first thing i did when i got my FRS...but im short so i dont have that issue 5'8"

Braces 07-25-2013 06:11 PM

I'm 6 feet and I also like the steering wheel low. Has nothing to do with being cool. It is just comfortable in that position. As with the original poster .... I can't see the tack in this position either. I just look for the shift light when I need to shift.

djliquidsteele 07-26-2013 06:41 PM

So I am setup like that video and I still can't see the top of the tach. Its all about body proportions. I'm 5'9" and have very long arms and short torso. Whatever works. I just pay attention to the engine sound and shift light rather than the actual RPM.

Bailey239 07-26-2013 06:51 PM

Im not exactly sure why this thread exists?

Interesting, somehow I've arrived at this position on my own.
:thanks:

TouchMyHonda 07-26-2013 07:18 PM

You need a bucket. It' will lower you and in all reality you want to have your legs as straight as possible.

Mr122 07-28-2013 09:05 PM

My other car doesn't have a tach.

Probably because that's how it's teached at driving school.

My friend, that's just a bad habit you've learned over the years. Proper seating and steering wheel position should be with your hands on 9 and 3, at chest level. If you stretch out your arms over the top of the steering wheel you should be able to bend your wrists over it.

MadFRS 07-29-2013 04:11 PM
