HKS superExhaust + Ecutek Stage 2.
Hi guys, I wanted to share with you the results we obtainted combining HKS super exhaust and Ecutek Stage 2.
First the Exhaust, i'm not sure it is available in the states as is, but in Japan it is the top of the range option for the 86 / BRZ. It is composed as following: https://www.hks-power.co.jp/product/...ust/index.html - R-Spec HKS EL header , no cat - Metalic cat 150 cells Front pipe - Power Spec-L muffler The complete package saves a lot of weight (about 13kgs), and is superb quality !! (i know some of you had issues with SPEC-L mufflers. That, i will discuss in the appropriate thread, i've been able to talk to heads of HKS about it and had some answers) here are some photos to illustrate: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U...2000/Setup.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-A...000/Detail.jpg Here a better view of the header and front pipe https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-A...0/manifold.jpg And the exhaust fitted on my car https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-6...00/Exhaust.jpg The installation went pretty smoothly, and then began the process of tuning the beast, SCREENpowers took care of it, and i can't thank them enough for the amazing job they did. They are pretty famous, and they prouved again how pro they are. The Ecutek custom tune they combined with the exhaust had tremendous results on the curves as you can see here: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o...0/IMG_3008.JPG The torque dip is really well smoothed and even though there is still a "drop" you still have more torque than stock ! and the power band is improuved everywhere to the redline wich was pushed to 7600 rpm. I couldn't drive it yet, as they are finalising the map and pushing every single details, just as a side note, we changed the spark plugs for better ones in order to maximise our chances for the best tune possible. The boss said he was really impressed with the results and think this actually a pretty good solution ! As a bonus, here is one of the Tune runs on the dynapack ! too bad this doesn't make any justice to the gorgeous and very loud sound it makes: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZUbJaxj2pY"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZUbJaxj2pY[/ame] If you have any questions, feel free to ask  |
What a beautiful exhaust.

The relocation of the second o2 sensor to after the cat is interesting!
|
Thanks guys, well the relocation makes sense, on the stock setup the sensor is after the pre-cat located on the header.
On the HKS header there is not cat, it then needs to be relocated after the main cat, on the front pipe. Still should you want to run a "straight" pipe, the Header has "two" holes to put the two sensors on it ;) clever !!! so it is totally possible to run catless without problems relocating the two sensors. Well of course you will still have to tune the ECU. But technicaly, no problems. |
I have the same thing except the retain the stock muffler. Sound more solid in the cabin, and zero drone and actually nothing noticeable to the passenger. Outside there is barely any differences... In short, performance improve with a low and stock profile. This header and catted front pipe come with certificate of passing emission and noise test. Not sure if this is useful in USA.
I have Vortech supercharger installed and will be further tuned by @Visconti |
I want that front pipe!
|
Hi, I got a pretty similar setup except my front pipe is catless, just dual resonators.
Are you still using the stock overpipe or did you get an aftermarket one, it wasn't mentioned in the original thread. |
The pictures show the stock overpipe. Looks like HKS needs to make one of those too!
|
The whole exhaust is HKS , from Manifold to Muffler :) it is part of what they call "super exhaust" setup.
|
here is everything for the exhaust ! ... of course nothing is stock ! Header no cat, Front pipe catted , and cat back ... dunno where you want a "down pipe", , the part between header and catback is called "front pipe"
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U...2000/Setup.jpg |
Your "overpipe" is still stock. You can see that it's still stock in your 3rd picture. It's the pipe with the heatshield that connects your header to your front pipe. The inner I.D. on the overpipe is just under 2inches or 50mm (I know because I just went outside to measure mine, it's sitting in the car port next to my stock header.)
What I want is your front-pipe. The pipe with the cat and resonator. I'd love to have that one. |
Nice set up!
|
FRS/BRZ exhaust goes as follows:
Header--Over-pipe--Front-pipe--Catback (or Center Pipe and Muffler or Axle Back) |
My humble excuses LOL totally forgot bout that litle dude in the midle !! C*** !!! ;) well yes in that perspective , it is stock :OP indeed.
Question is, should i get rid of it, hum will question that to the right people, well for sure its design isn't ideal at all stock, will it make that much of a difference over the full exhaust I dunno ... worth investigating for the next step maybe. ;) thanks for pointing that out ! |
Good question. I'm guessing your header I.D. after the collectors is around 63mm or 2.5in or so. Same as your front pipe. Those two are connected by a 50mm I.D. pipe. So that is your main restriction in your exhaust setup. Would be interesting to see what others say.
|
I'll question that with my tuning shop, see what they did on their racing 86 ... but shouldn't be much of a problem to make something !! ...
But yes indeed everything else is 2.5" so, as small as this part is, it is "in the way". |
Let us know what they tell you. Thanks.

HKS don't have an overpipe
Heya. I got pretty much the same setup as you(cept my front pipe is catless - due to be installed in exactly 5-6 hours). Changing the overpipe *does* make a difference! Car noticeably revs alot free-er.
The overpipe is the curvy pipe that goes past the steering rack. You can see part of the pic here on the underside of my car.(its the pipe near that white square sticker) http://i46.tinypic.com/2lt0tab.jpg Here is a comparison pic between the STOCK overpipe and another overpipe(MOTIV Concepts) and you can quite easily see the difference in diameter of the two.. http://blog.perrinperformance.com/wp...o2-550x366.jpg I myself purchase the MOTIV Concepts overpipe mainly because HKS strangely DO NOT have one yet on the market. Plus, the quality of the MOTIV is I dare say, better than what HKS could make imho. Check out the quality of those welds! http://i39.tinypic.com/2rxjj88.jpg http://i44.tinypic.com/353az4y.jpg |
You absolutely need to change that stock overpipe to match with the rest of your HKS exhaust.
Right now this part is restricting the entire system. |
Just came back from a drive with my new FULL exhaust system(Frontpipe installed this morning)
Change the overpipe ASAP!! You will LOVE the sound!! When free revving @ 4-5krpm its got a nice raspy bark. Almost sounds similar to the TRD Griffon exhaust(cept for NOT being Ti) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFIksPFOJL8"]おわらサーã‚*ット モータースポーム„フェス 86 TRD Griffon Concept - YouTube[/ame] Hitting the gas at WOT, the car sounds damn angry, just a light touch on the throttle(while NOT under load) and it will rev to 3krpm easy. |
hey stevo i heard an exhaust clip here:[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2dhQgYaMtg"]HKS EL Header with T1R Catback on Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ - YouTube[/ame]
and i like the sound but i like yours a lot better. is the exhaust not on the one in the video soft because of the hks header or is it cuz the front pipe or cuz the T1R cat back? I would imagine it would be louder or raspier than your setup cuz this one is a single exit but it isn't. What made yours so raspy and loud? was it mainly the header? the over pipe? the front pipe? |
stevo_12v exhaust(no tune yet)

I managed to get a buddy to film me doing a driveby.. the video is a bit blurred, but that's not the stuff that really matters, the thing that matters is the SOUND. Here is my startup > driveby. Note: The car has NOT had a tune yet. It is running ridiculously rich(I am getting 130km/200miles to HALF a tank). I believe a tune will change the exhaust note of it. [ame]http://youtu.be/qFftuRByyPk[/ame] EDIT: @ 35seconds, you can hear me feather the throttle a bit under load, I personally prefer that sound. Sounds more angry. ^_^ UPDATE(25th July): Had someone interested in my exhaust setup and wanted a close up video of my car revving. I decided to rev it at its loudest(between 3.8krpm and 4.8krpm). [ame]http://youtu.be/etZWcQ2eaBs[/ame] Ordering the MOTIV *CATTED* front pipe to replace the HKS front pipe. Reason being I'm not too fond of the smell or the soot coming from such a straight through system. The sound of the exhaust sounds good to me so far. Maybe hoping the tone of the exhaust will be a little bit lower pitched with the catted MOTIV pipe, but still as loud :D |
Here is a litle test i did this afternoon to give you a better feel of the sound ;) too bad you are missing 50% of the experience, the sound pressure, real life loudness, but its just awesome really.

For those with the HKS header and front pipe catless setup, do you have a check engine light on?
|
Why did operator stop dyno at 6300 rpm on OEM setup when that car make max power at 7000 rpm in oem setup?
|
Very good question, answer is very simple too, in Japan cars are limited to 180km /h from factory ... wich is when it hitted 6300 rpm on the dyno ;)
After the ECUtek tune the speed limiter had been removed of course ! :) And for previous question, no of course not any cells or codes showing up ;) |

I'm curious for those that has a full HKS header setup + test pipe with no cats if their car is throwing a CEL. I read on the HKS website that with their system without the cat setup will potentially throw a CEL which they said it's ok. For those that has that setup, is that happening like they said? |
