clanking sound after Eibach pro install

I installed my "Eibach pro kit" today on my stock struts, I didn't really run into any problems during the install, I followed a DIY from the forum and used hand tools. When I turn my wheels left and right there are no weird sounds, while driving 35+ or slowly on smooth roads or only small bumps I don't hear any weird sounds, when when I drive slow over speed bumps, bad roads or potholes I hear a pretty noticeable clanking sound coming from my wheel area. I checked and I don't see any marks from metal contacting each other anywhere and all my bolts are torqued down, can anyone think of anything I might of overlooked or anything I should check? I know this is probably hard to diagnose with this little info, but i'm at a loss. I haven't noticed any weird noises from my rear struts at all. :/

I took a video it is kind of quiet and the audio doesn't really give it justice but you can kind of make out the abnormal sound's. [ame]http://youtu.be/OX4Q-hsjSKs[/ame]

Double-check your swaybars and strut tophats.

Bailey239 07-07-2013 09:57 PM

What about the top hats? That they're tight? Wouldn't the swaybars be having an issue while turning more then just going over bumps? Or do you think they're knocking under the car?

charged86 07-07-2013 10:20 PM

I have zero problems with min dis assemble and make sure the strut mount is all the way down on the strut shaft there is a machined part of the strut shaft that stops the hat

Bailey239 07-07-2013 10:28 PM

Aren't the front hats supposed to spin with the bearing? I guess ill have to take it off and see what you're talking about.

bkblitzed 07-07-2013 10:30 PM

you torque the bottom bolts on the strut enough?

What bolt are you talking about exactly? The strut to hub assembly Nuts? http://i.imgur.com/dXCuo.jpg

bkblitzed 07-07-2013 11:04 PM

yea, when i didnt do it enough it loosened and made a clunk noise. But seems to me that you did it enough. Since it's not coilovers i doubt it'll be coil binding. Also since you dont have after market camber plates i doubt it'll be your top hats hitting the top of the fender. Can you physically feel the clunk in the car?

Bailey239 07-07-2013 11:12 PM

Just slightly. I'm going to check those two bolts after work tomorrow, hopefully that's all that's wrong. I'm open to any more ideas but ill post an update after I check them

Bailey239 07-07-2013 11:16 PM

Im going to pick up a new torque wrench after work, this one might be defective when going to higher foot pounds or something.

Moshpit37 07-07-2013 11:46 PM

How exactly did you break the top nut loose to remove the spring? If you didn't use an open-centered socket or the "special tool" to hold the shaft with a hex key, there is a chance you could have spun the shaft loose inside the shock. I'm speaking from experience, ruined one of my rear shocks this way.

I used passthrough sockets and an allen wrench so I dont think thats the issue.

Bailey239 07-08-2013 07:34 PM

So I went to autozone got a new torque wrench, re torqued the bolts from the hub to strut, checked the other bolts and looked around for metal contacting and leaving marks. Reassembled everything and am sill hearing the noise, is it normal to hear some noise when going over things? I'm going to try to get a video of this sound but so far, no progress. Anyone have any other ideas? :/

suaveflooder 07-08-2013 08:10 PM

Is it on all of them, or just one? If it's just one, you have a blown strut if that top bolt is tight. Put the stock springs back on and take it in and get it fixed under warranty.

Bailey239 07-08-2013 08:12 PM

It's just the front two. I don't think it is blown because I used the same method on them all and I had the proper hand tools, but since it's only the front two I have no idea, I took a video ill try and upload it if the audio is good enough.

charged86 07-08-2013 08:14 PM

dumb question is the spring right side up? is the very end of the coil of the spring sitting in the indented area on strut body

Crossing my fingers for you. I blew mine on stock suspension with about a thousand miles on the car

I just hit 1000 miles to =/ Well here is the video, it is kind of quiet the audio doesn't really give it justice but you can kind of make out the abnormal sound. [ame]http://youtu.be/OX4Q-hsjSKs[/ame]

Unfortunately that sounds EXACTLY like mine did. Blown strut for sure, I'm afraid.

Bailey239 07-08-2013 08:49 PM

Really? :/ are they fixable or do they need to be replaced? How much can the strut spin without blowing I can't imagine I moved it much. When yours were blown was it from a spring swap or they just failed, I wonder if the front two are more sensitive considering the two rear ones are fine.

bkblitzed 07-08-2013 08:53 PM

put back your stock springs in the front and see if they make the same noise. If they do then it could be a blown strut. OR you can take it to a a shop and see what they say.

Bailey239 07-08-2013 09:02 PM

that will be my project tomorrow, when I first went to swap my springs I took the first one out (front right) and then realized I needed the pass through socket to get the top off, when I put it back it was making that noise, after swapping all the springs the front two are making the noise, so maybe it is a strut issue.

Agreed, sounds like a blown strut. Probably just on one side, but get that stock suspension back on. You have two options, get it fixed for free with another stock one from the dealership, or get Koni's. I vote get it fixed for free, buy the Koni's in a couple years.

Mine was from a spring swap. I actually got lucky and did the fronts first with the air gun with no issues, then broke the first rear strut I started on. I didn't want to mess with the fronts anymore and ended up just buying a new rear strut myself. Good luck, hope you get it fixed soon.

The spring swap was a pain and took forever, I should of waited and got konis, I'm thinking if I swap back to stock and take it back, whenever they fix it, I would still have to try and take it off to put on my new springs because I don't really like the stock hight and who knows if I'd just have the same problem again :/ I wouldn't be able to get konis for a couple weeks though. Would these be ok to drive on for a few weeks or do I need to park my car until this is fixed?

suaveflooder 07-08-2013 10:30 PM

you can drive on it, but I would fix it asap. You know how to do it now, it should be MUCH faster this time. Too bad you aren't closer, I would help you out.

Bailey239 07-08-2013 11:15 PM

Are konis more durable? If I bought them I'd be afraid I'd blow them out or something and have this same issue :/

Yes, MUCH. I plan on going with them when the car is out of warranty in two years. Until then, I'll swap the stock stuff back on if the shocks blow. No need to spend extra money before necessary

Bailey239 07-08-2013 11:28 PM

True, but like I said I'd be afraid I'd just blow them again, and if I'm gonna spend the money to get it installed on stock struts I might as well just spend that money on konis and do it myself lol.

Fair enough  I'm pretty cheap :bonk:

Bailey239 07-08-2013 11:30 PM

Same here. But one thing I value more then my money is my time haha :D

Justkiz 07-09-2013 01:38 AM

Yep, I have a prokit and got a leaking rear driver side strut.
got lucky, my dealer replaced it for warranty even with aftermarket springs on.
I am in Australia by the way.

Wow that's some luck right there.

wparsons 07-09-2013 10:36 AM

If the strut is blown you should be able to see some leaking fluid around the seals, but if the shaft loosened internally I doubt you'll see fluid at all.

I haven't noticed any fluid. Is there a way to fix it if its an internal thing?

wparsons 07-09-2013 11:28 AM

Not that I know of, you'd have to totally disassemble the strut and they're sealed units.

Bailey239 07-10-2013 10:15 AM

oh, well looks like Konis are my next step. Does anyone know a cheaper place then here to get them? http://ft86speedfactory.com/suspensi...cks-struts-89/

wparsons 07-10-2013 11:23 AM

Under $600 for a full set of Koni's is a pretty good deal already.

Bailey239 07-10-2013 11:42 AM

Oh allright. Yeah that was the best price I found. But they're stronger? I won't have I worry as much about spinning them when I'm installing them?

simpleisbest 07-11-2013 01:11 AM

Sounds similar to loose endlink bolts, too. I had a similar sound and just needed to really tighten the front end link bolts.
