Random Chirp while moving. NOT idle chirp.

So I've just turned 1000 miles and I've started to notice that every now and then I get a random chirp noise. It is very sporadic. I haven't been able to figure out the conditions that make it happen. I usuallu can only hear it if the windows are done or I am not moving too fast and there isn't wind noise

It is definitely coming from the bay. I'm not worried about it as it hasn't gotten worse or affected driving. I'm just curious if anyone else has noticed this.

Again, this is not in regard to idle chirp. Though the noise is similar, but it's just one chirp.

EDIT :

A/C Clutch - I shoulda searched.

Ive noticed this for thousands of miles now. No idea. Dealer said it was "normal". From what I can tell anyone else who is wondering what it sounds like, put your car in any gear 2nd, 3rd, start to move and turn on the AC and you'll hear the noise that is happening randomly to me. Usually when I let out the clutch, but it can be during acceleration or braking as well.

Stephens 06-14-2013 05:43 PM

As far as I can tell, mine usually occurs in the 2800-4000 rpm window. I haven't even taken it to the dealer because I knew that would say it was '' normal''

It sounds like marbles rolling? This was discussed for quite sometime previously .. Conclusion was its normal

tap'd

Uh no. Idk where you got "marbles rolling" from a random chirp, which has nothing to do with the AC if you say its that next.

Stephens 06-14-2013 07:08 PM

No. This is not the under car rattles. I have those too. This is something different. It's quite a distinct chirp from the engine bay area. Mine sounds like it's coming from the driver's side, but that's where I sit so I may be biased.

If I'm not mistaken it was deduced that the jar of marbles sound was transmission/clutch related and that other cars with similar Aisin transmissions do the same thing.

Edit: I just drove the car with the AC off (Alabama summertime, thought I was going to die) and the car doesn't do it. I guess it's AC related like Carwhisperer said.

br_z1Lch 06-14-2013 08:41 PM

It's the A/C clutch. I took mine in and had it looked at, and they said it was "normal", even if it is crazy annoying.

Carwhisperer 06-14-2013 09:13 PM

I don't have to have my AC on or any air on for it to chirp. Its not AC related dude. Mine does it all the time with all the air off.

I meant that the sound I'm getting when I turn the AC on is quite similar to the random high pitch "tink" I get with the AC off. Has nothing to do with my AC when its completely turned off when I still hear the noise under heavy load, letting out the clutch, braking. Its something else.

Stephens 06-14-2013 10:19 PM

My bad. I misunderstood. Mine doesn't seem to do it with AC off. I haven't really checked all that much except for today. Nonetheless I'm not worried.

It just seems that these cars are crazy audible.

Carwhisperer 06-14-2013 10:53 PM

yeah they do make a lot of different noises for a 2013 vehicle.

frslee 06-15-2013 01:34 AM

Search tweet sound and you'll get the answer to the noise. It's related to fan component. It seems like the noise is present with just the fan on.

Kefuddle 06-15-2013 03:02 AM

Agree with the others regarding the noise being A/C. I only get the noise with the A/C on. I don't get the noise with the fan on and the A/C off. I presume it is the compressor. Switching the A/C on will usually induce the noise.

foxhu 06-15-2013 12:12 PM

don't fan comes on sometime even when the a/c is not on? just to blow the hot air out of the engine bay. no??

Carwhisperer 06-15-2013 04:22 PM

Could possibly be the case ^ My car Tweets randomly, no matter what im doing other than being in N sitting still. Once I start moving in gear, slowing down, letting out the clutch I hear a much louder "tweet" "chirp" sounding like it comes from either side of my wheels.

Xx-Ness-xX 08-10-2013 01:55 AM

I have exactly the same problem, but as far as I know there was no noise when I picked up the car, now the car is only about 790 miles in, and I start hearing that tweet/squeak/chirp noises...

djdnz 08-14-2013 10:59 AM

Yup mine chirps, only with the AC on. The Subaru techs "couldn't hear it". Anyone get any resolution with this one?

It's probably the belt slipping on the pulley when the A/C engages, you could try tightening the belt but then you risk putting undue stress on your pulleys and having to replace them prematurely or worst case actually messing up your seals on the A/C pump and having to buy a new unit.

The pulleys are much more resilient than I just made it sound but be aware that's the balancing act when you install belts. I haven't done this on my car although I can hear the chirp, this worked for my truck which had a similar noise when the A/C was turned on. You could also try some "belt dressing" but I'm not a fan of it.

I have one, noticed it even on the highway at 70 miles an hour with windows up. I thought the noise was coming from my left front wheel well.
