Commiting Blasphemy...I should know this

I am taking a BRZ on a driveway test today. Just out of curiosity, what would be the easiest and cheapest way to raise the car 1 inch?

deucethemoose 06-14-2013 02:14 PM

To avoid bottoming out entering/exiting the driveway?

Move.

You can always install some coilovers and raise the car 1" over stock, but it'll look dumb. Not cheap, though.

If your driveway is a rolled curb/gutter you can buy this junk:

problem solved.

RAWR BRZ 06-14-2013 02:16 PM

Stock height you can angle anything and be fine... I am fine even with a 1 1/2 - 2 inch drop.

The easiest way would be not buy the BRZ and stick with the WRX. As mentioned, at stock ride height I never found a driveway that I couldn't get up without scraping if taking it at the proper angle.

GeorgeJFrick 06-14-2013 02:39 PM

Put 18's on it? (I think it comes with 17's ?)

ashtray 06-14-2013 02:56 PM

My work entrance has a steep incline that is all gouged up from cars scraping. My BRZ can tackle it straight on no problem. My '03 WRX wagon with a softer stock suspension (and a bolt on rally innovations bar) will scrape if I go too fast head on (ie 6mph instead of 3).

If you can angle, you should be fine in most cases. I angle over speed bumps - not bc it doesn't clear, but bc when both wheels on the same axle drop at the same time, there's more suspension compression and it can "thunk" if you go too fast (ie 3mph vs 1!).

OP - are you looking to ride 1" taller all the time, or just negotiating one entrance? Solution could be as mentioned to put ramps over that extrance, or a more complex solution might be some sort of air bag suspension that would allow you to raise and lower your car on command. (Not sure if they make it for our cars or how they affect handling.)

mezdup 06-14-2013 02:58 PM

back in, assuming it's a driveway lol.

monkeedoo 06-14-2013 03:02 PM

get bigger tires

dsgerbc 06-14-2013 03:26 PM

Drive in with a lot of speed, brake hard, release just before the kink so that suspension unloads just as you go over it ;)

Seriously though, you're gonna be fine.

gily25 06-14-2013 03:54 PM

You could try backing in depending on what your parking situation is...you may want to get a back=up cam but it'd be better than raising the height.

DantKR 06-14-2013 03:58 PM

Need pictures to properly asses.

Only gonna raise the car .5". Need 18s AND bigger tires. Or some 19s will give you 1"

SubieNate 06-14-2013 04:38 PM

All this talk about wheels... You're supposed to compensate for the wheel diameter by changing the sidewall height so that the speedo doesn't change. If what you want is more clearance changing the wheel size is the wrong way to do it.

Bignicky1 06-14-2013 04:52 PM

Raise the car more... oh lordd

Sasquachulator 06-14-2013 04:53 PM

get an SUV.

Or angle in. That usually solves all sorts of clearance problems. Unless of course the car is REALLY low, then you had better be living in the flattest land ever made.

I think it looks AWESOME raised with the right wheels and tires. Look at Cusco for your needs.

Pics are taken with the car at a complete stop and the wheels at the point where they begin the climb. It scraped a little going straight in and didn't on an angle. If there was any snow, I wouldn't make it. Really, kind of wanted this to work.

Burrcold 06-14-2013 06:07 PM

That doesn't look fun...

Just shovel the snow down to the kink...

OrbitalEllipses 06-14-2013 06:30 PM

That's a hell of a driveway...

chutrain 06-14-2013 06:43 PM

Look up saggy butt spacer for the Legacy. Should have others that will fit others like WRX and Forester. People use it in the rear to level out a spring drop. Also look for stock spring pads that might be slightly taller.

Tein coilovers with EDFC

CircuitJerk 06-14-2013 06:55 PM

Did you try backing in?

a2cpc 06-14-2013 11:03 PM

I don't want to spend more money on a car that is brand new...I'll just wait, who knows, maybe I'll get the driveway fixed. There is always the Abarth.

deucethemoose 06-14-2013 11:26 PM

You can get these small bags that mount on top of any coilover assembly between the coil and the top mount. Drive with them fully deflated, then inflate to give clearance over speed bumps or your driveway.

I can almost get the driveway redone for the cost of those!

What's wrong with cheap curb ramps or reversing the orientation you normally pull into your driveway?

I was thinking the same thing...

The tried and proven way is a set of 2x4's or 2x6's... But the black rubber alternative looked more appealing to me.

Good luck!

I will be ordering my 2014 soon and move back from overseas so I will make sure that my cars don't have this issue with the house we buy.

Since the curb ramps could be intrusive on to a public, heavily used sidewalk, they all seem to present a tripping/insurance problem. During the test we were able to make it up and down the driveway without scraping if...I came to a complete stop when the wheels reached the point of starting to come up the driveway and I was at a precise angle. Although it could be done, there was no room for error, or snow and ice. Put as little as 1/2 inch of snow on the slope and you are guaranteed to slide down the last 2 feet, basically uncontrolled. The front lip of my WRX can attest to the lasting effects.

In a few months, I am going to look into a redesign of the slope. If I get it fixed, I am just hoping that at that time the local Subaru General Manager gives me the same offer..."Take it home for the weekend!"

ashtray 06-16-2013 03:08 PM

Can you mount something like this on top of the car?

Would work for large pot holes, or even river crossings.

:D

DantKR 06-17-2013 09:53 AM

You need ramps.

Ryuu0u 06-17-2013 10:08 AM

WOW! I though some of the driveways around my place were bad. You can't try it at an angle at all? You definetly need some remodeling or planks to get up that.
