transmission or diferential peoblem? CLICK/TICK

I get a click/tick every time I shift it happens when I release the clutch and use the gas. It will also do it at 3000 RPM coasting then when I return to accelerating again I hear this CLICK. It even does it in reverse. feels like it happens when the gear is engaged. ANYONE HAVE THIS?

frslee 05-15-2013 03:12 PM

I hear slight click when I push the clutch. Just curious.

EZWood 05-15-2013 06:00 PM

i hear something that may be similar. to me it sounds like the e brake being angaged or possibly disengaged while moving.

Wo6M 05-15-2013 06:06 PM

This sounds a lot like a differential action , the hypoid pinion gear is in contsnt mesh with the ring gear of the torsion style diff. The ring gear has two sides, the cost side and drive side aka faces . Now of the tolerance is not correct and too far apart I e not preloaded enough you will get a click from th e rear end when
Getting into gear I e moving
Let off the gass and cost
Uneven shiffting.

I'm pretty sure warranty would cover this but I would get it checked out. .

Sookainian 05-23-2013 11:04 PM

Same too, I get a click/tick every time I shift it happens when I release the clutch and use the gas

chenshuo 05-24-2013 07:58 AM

Check your pedals. My gas pedal makes a click noise when i lightly step on it. I took it to the dealer, they acknowledged the clicking noise but said thats normal nothing wrong.

SMOKETREES 05-27-2013 07:01 PM

I get this too. Thought at first was an exhaust situation but nope def sounds like its coming from clutch/tranny or diff..

charged86 05-27-2013 07:23 PM

Haven't heard this click yet. Had it on another vehicle it crunched as I shifted like a the master cylinder was fucked up

vtmike 05-30-2013 10:35 PM

My car does this too. Just started to notice it around 8500 miles. It happens when there is an abrupt acceleration. Wasn't sure if it was drivetrain or what. Some cars with exhaust have had issues where it will shift and contact something when accelerating (I have an aftermarket exhaust.) Some other kinds of cars (Mazdaspeed 3, focus st) have motor mounts that allow the engine to move enough to contact the firewall. Was wondering if that's a possibility.

One thing in my particular case that might rule out drivetrain is I can induce the sound by punching the throttle for a rev match or just abruptly applying throttle while not in gear.

Anyone have any updates on this? I checked out the exhaust bolts and everything seems snug.

Mine is a particularly loud clank noise when doing a fast redline shift from 1st to 2nd when releasing clutch and applying throttle going into second.

Apparently the stock transmission mount has some play in it from the factory. Wondering if this is it.

Mine does it going 5 mph in 1st gear all the time. Little throttle, let off *tick* high pitch ticking noise. No idea.. Glad im not the only one experiencing this.

vtmike 06-05-2013 11:01 AM

I'm wondering if it's a motor/transmission mount working it's way loose, or if it's the tob. A coworker with a wrx said to look at the pitch stop mount. Looks like the exact same part as the wrx.

After a little research, it looks like the stock pitch stop mount is really cheap and a lot of wrxs with the stock one make the same noise when shifting. Think I might pick up a pitch stop in the near future.

Never mind, the car doesn't have a pitch stop mount. So maybe the transmission mount.

Any news on this?

Carwhisperer 06-11-2013 03:39 PM

Mines still doing it especially when I let out the clutch, sometimes i'll hear it come from the right side of the car, sometimes the left side of my car. Usually its just 1 tick, but sometimes its 3 ticks back to back really fast.

kkkirbyyy 06-13-2013 11:01 PM

any updates? I started hearing this about two days ago and I was planning on going in for the new tsb on our fuel pump issue and have them check out this "tick/click" issue. any input is appreciated. thanks!

Hanakuso 06-17-2013 02:37 PM

Mine makes the tick after every shift. I had a similar noise back when I had my S2K and with that car it needed the axle nut to be retorqued

Carwhisperer 06-17-2013 04:26 PM

Mines does the exact same aswell. Hanakuso, but even just while accelerating.

I have the same exact problem. Noticed it today in traffic when i let off the throttle and decelerate to 5mph and you hear a click under the shifter. Mine's an AT btw.

Since AT are doing it also? I'm not a tranny expert but what could it possibly be if it's happening to both? Mine hasn't gotten any worse besides it makes the noise basically eveeytime I go thru 1st thru 3rd and sometimes 4th

This clunk has been bothering me since I bought the car last September. Two dealerships have looked at it and the best I get is "We don't have another one here to compare to", or "Just let the clutch out slower". Getting pretty sick of this. This video is where I suspect the problem is coming from. The parking brake set and transmission in neutral, and I am able to rotate the drive shaft a good 20-30 degrees. Can anyone else try this out and post a video to compare?

I'll give this a shot tomorrow and post my results. I've also noticed a tick/click sound from my AT when starting from a stop or stopping.

It's coming from the rear axles. Go to the dealer. Some had success in just torquing down the axle nut. Others have had the inner joint assembly's break in two. And they have been denied warranty. I had mine looked at today he re-torqued it. Helped for a few miles then it was back. Going back on Monday.

Is there a TSB for this issue ? Do you have the link to those with inner joint broken ?

Also any picture of which part need to be retorq ?

Thanks !

Ticking common before this failure:

I noticed the ticking on mines too when I set the gear to Neutral while pressing the clutch and releasing it. When I am parked in my garage I do a constant press/depress on the clutch and notice the ticking sound but immediately after I shut off the engine the tick goes away.

It's got something to do while the engine is still running.

My axle but was torqued down by the dealer today. Still doing it. The assembly is probably cracked right now. Going back Monday

No tsb yet. Also they have been dyning warrantys both Subaru and Toyota

That's just drive train slop. some of that is normal. To which extent I'm not sure.

It was a long time ago when I first noticed the sound (~12k miles now), but it initially only clicked when going from forward to reverse and vice versa. I though it was just another "normal" 86 sound, but now it's happening when on and off throttle. What a piece of junk.

Same thing here man same thing. Dealer torqued my nut down for me.still clicks going into reverse or something but not as much when the car is under load.

Carwhisperer 08-12-2013 10:37 PM

Mines ticking a LOT more than normal.. But I'm having much more serious misfire issues atm to deal with.

Seems like if your car is lowered they are using that as an excuse to deny claims.

ProTekk 08-13-2013 02:59 PM

Getting the clicking/ticking as well, AT. Sound direction is hard to judge in the car but I swear it sounds like it's coming from the left rear axle. Could be wrong. Anything that we can check on our own?

feldy 08-13-2013 03:48 PM

You can try to torque the nut down to 140lbs of torque

feldy 08-15-2013 07:31 PM

To anyone having this issue . Get to the dealer right away about it. I took it Saturday they torqued it down still doing the noise. Today they emailed me that I have a new axle at the dealer waiting to get replaced under warranty. Pretty rad as they didn't tell me they were even ordering one. I feel like they maybe more open to fixing it before it snaps as if you brought it in snapped but who knows.

is there a DIY on how to prevent this before it gets to that point, or fix it after it does?

Some more discussion in this thread:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40463

If it happened to me and wasn't warrantied, i'd be tempted to go with this as a fix:
