Do you have many car friends?

I am the only person I know who is actually into cars. In college I was part of a car club and met a lot of great people but since I have left that scene they have all dissapeared.

I was wondering, are we a dying breed or are my friends just lame?

When I talk about GT5 or how much I love my new tires on my miata they all just stare at me blankly or ask if I have COD5 yet.

7thgear 02-03-2012 01:01 PM

most of my friends are into cars

but none of them are into driving, and most simply suck at it (i always drive in the backseat and try to just look to the side)

and unfortunately those people that i spend time at the racetrack are not really friends.

I can definitely relate!

In HS and college, lots of car guy friends, but it seemed as if they were more into the car for the sake of being "cool" or for girls, or just for the rush of it.

Now that I'm out of college, people my age that are also enthusiasts are few and far between. Most people grow up, and unless they have an deep love for mechanical things, they move on.

Giccin 02-03-2012 01:12 PM

Most of my car friends ended up being some really fun Photographers I've shot with. Other than that--my car friends are about a handful of people who'd answer some of my questions and the rest are on this forum. Lol e-friends are quite helpful. Even though we fight with each other over things.

Arguing during a friendship is essentially saying we care, right? :D

My friends are mostly a mix of car people and hockey people. Some work people but I try not to spend much time outside of work with work people.

As I've gotten older I've also reduced who I actually consider friends to just close friends.

bambbrose 02-03-2012 01:18 PM

PS anyone in central PA that wants to shoot the shit and have a beer or two, PM me :D

blur 02-03-2012 01:27 PM

I mainly have two good friends who I car talk with lol. It's always about GT5, their cars(WRX and TL), or the 86.

merlin2111 02-03-2012 01:42 PM

My friends who still love cars all live far away so we post things to each other on FB but I would love to have a good friend who I could debate NA vs Turbo vs Superchargers and increased toe vs camber. Most of my friends just ask me why their car is making a funny noise and if I can fix it.

DommerEOD 02-03-2012 01:43 PM

All of my friends are car people. I have nothing to relate too with non car people.

I know what you mean :sigh: where is a good car friend when you need them?

CSSM 02-03-2012 02:27 PM

No friends who like cars for me :(

There is one that will talk with me about anything so I will count that as half

ichitaka05 02-03-2012 04:48 PM

Hm... I guess, I'm luck that most of my friends are car freaks.

When I need to fix/tune my car, most of my friend come down to help. Even one of my friend's fiance, she get down on the ground pulling the exhaust out (last yr w damn tranny fork bust into 3 pieces).

Of course, I do have friends that have no clue on car stuff, so they do text often to see what's wrong w their car. lol

SIRvive 02-03-2012 04:54 PM

I have two friends that i can think of that are still into the car scene. One is working on opening his own shop (too bad hes a Honda fanboy) and the other lives about 8 hours away now. The rest are more into cosmetics or just do not care how it looks for feels as long as it gets them from point a to b.

Lonewolf 02-03-2012 07:30 PM

I only have one another true car buddy (drives a Viper [sex on wheels] and a sixty something Mustang droptop).

Most of my other friends know or like fast cars, but don't know much about how they work.

My buddy with a G37 coupe barely knows how to add air to the tires, lol.

The rest see cars as appliances...I feel so alone unless I'm on a car forum sometimes....:happy0180:

Same here. Don't know how to communicate with anybody except when the topic is about cars.

4agze 02-03-2012 07:44 PM

just like ichi I'm lucky most of my friends are also in to cars, even thou they don't agree on how I do or tune my car but we all love driving and cars. Right now its hard for me to be in the scene with work & a little girl but due to facebook I'm still well informed on whats going on.

serialk11r 02-03-2012 07:44 PM

Well in my experience a fair portion of guys are good at drooling over Maseratis and Audi R8 and Ferraris and stuff, and can appreciate a relatively rough sporty ride, but no one I know is actually into cars besides this one kid I happen to know from Vancouver (they're all swimming in money and change cars every year or something :P).

It's okay though, I have pretty broad interests :D Never ran out of things to talk about with people.

merlin2111 02-03-2012 08:18 PM

Ya i am lucky to be interested in a lot of things and people love to talk to me about politics due to my career as a teacher. Glad to know that I am not alone in the lack of people who are interested in cars. It is funny, I am part of a ton of forums and drift around and it is funny to see how many people I recognize from gencoupe, clubrsx, naosic, 1addicts, bimmerpost, miata, and roadster forums.

ahausheer 02-03-2012 08:33 PM

I don't know anyone that is into cars. Everything I know about working on cars I taught myself with books and the internet, and often after breaking the thing I was trying to fix.

zoomzoomers 02-03-2012 08:36 PM

I used to have a lot until I let loose a shock from my old Integra on a wall. It bounced off and and hit my friend (past tense). I was trying to change out springs. It broke his arm in 2 places and a couple of ribs. I no longer have car friends...

[u2b]CYFOI_UsVxI[/u2b]

I had a lot of buddies who are into cars but most of them got into motorcycle racing and realized how boring cars were. :D Some are still around but most of them got married and have kids so they really don't do much.

I was really into bikes for about 15 years or so, but I got into a series of major accidents and had a few very very close friends die in motorcycle accident so I've been on a hiatus, and I do mean hiatus, for many years now. But once you've had that bug bite it never leaves you. On sunny days it calls to me. LOL Lucky you. Nice bikes you got there.

In terms of friends and cars. I live in LA, which means that anyone and everyone are into cars. It's just that they're everywhere and most people tend to like cars with high price tags, which I think is funny. Bimmers/MB's/Audi's are par for the course. It's sort of a good thing and a bad thing. Nobody is ever satisified. That is why I really like the idea of the FRS/BRZ even more. :w00t:

Thanks bro! That is true! I learned how to ride a motorcycle way before I learned how to drive a car and it will never leave nor will I be w/out a moto. I've been in some gnarly crashes and only lost one good friend in a motorcycle accident.

I absolutely agree with you! You remember how big the import scene was here in SoCal. I know a lot of people who seemed to move up to the euro cars thinking they are sort of "upgrading" to be a much more respectable hobby.

Also, after the late 90's, the manufactures were killing off the fun cars. That's when most of my buddies started to get into bikes. Now even motos seem to be tapering off too.

Guff 02-03-2012 11:02 PM

I don't have friends. All my friends are dead.

Just kidding. Almost all of my friends, my family, save a few, are car people. Its great!

Got shivers when I read that.

Argent6978 02-04-2012 12:16 AM

Nope. None of my friends are car people like me. :( They're all gaming nerds....

Dark 02-04-2012 12:16 AM

Most of my friends are into car and driving, but suck at mechanical stuff.
I'm not any better though. I know some basic mechanical stuff and can DIY, but I'm clueless when people here start talking about engine( and that's the only thing I know the least about car.)

Mr.Jay 02-04-2012 12:24 AM

my car friends think the best mod is putting big subs in the back and big rims :(

the internet is my car friend haha actually I talk cars with a couple guys at work (one a real car guy) and my friends dads they like cars but not my friends

Awesome! Nice to meet another bike dude. I don't want to age myself too bad, but my first bike was a Honda Hurricane and a Yamaha FZR 400. The FZR will forever be my first love. At 6'3" 215lbs. I was always too big for it, but I love it none the less. That's why I love roadsters and small nimble cars till today. I learned to appreciate what a small little/nimble thing can do once you really get aggressive with it. Post up some pics of your rides so I can drool. LOL :happy0180:

switchlanez 02-04-2012 02:00 AM

Growing up, my only car friend was my dad (he still is). I've also made friends in college that happened to like cars (engineers tend to be that way). After college, made friends along the way at meets even with some who hardly know about cars (they'd only tag along at the meets cause it seemed cool). I consider the above to be general friends who have an interest in cars but are not strictly "car friends."

Best times were with people I'd meet buying/selling parts or selling my car. I'd post up in the forum and local San Diego owners would buy my parts or trade parts w/ other owners. Some drove from LA, Las Vegas, and Sacramento for rare parts or for my car. We'd swap parts and sometimes it'd spontaneously become an install party with us wrenching away on each other's cars. I eventually sold my all my Toyotas and we went our separate ways but we still keep in touch through FB.

My newest car friend is my boss' boss from Asia. When he last visited we were drinking and talking about cars. He replaced his WRX with a sweet BMW 135i hatchback (not sold in the US).

Nowadays, I drive an SX4 which doesn't have much of an enthusiast community + I just moved to Kansas where I know nobody. So (outside of this forum) car friend activity has slooowwed down but it'll pick back up eventually.

HNDAgoon 02-04-2012 10:00 AM

All 6 of my closest friends are really into cars. Only one really cares about handling tho, the rest are more into hp and style.

ZetaVI 02-04-2012 10:17 AM

I do have friends who like cars but are more about style and power. They claim they know alot about cars because of aftermarket mods but in reality they have no idea what they are talking about. They just follow from media and the internet what everyone else thinks is cool.

OrbitalEllipses 02-04-2012 05:50 PM

Almost none. A few acquaintances from here or there, but no one I'd call a friend except for a die-hard 'Yota fan with an '85 Celica Supra he's rebuilding and another guy into all sorts of cars.
