Scratches from Window Usage?

Has anyone noticed small vertical scratches forming near the center of the window? I am trying to get a picture of it, its just a hard shot to get. I've noticed them on both sides in the same spots.

Passenger side, dead middle of the window on the outside face. 2-3" vertical scratch that you can feel with your fingernail. I assume it came from the guide ribbon/track on the inside of the door. Haven't bothered with going to the dealer yet for time/they suck reasons.

Also have them. Messed up my tint.

this is a common problem with frame-less subaru doors. The window guides get dirty and scratch the window.
my Impreza had pretty noticable scratches. This is the same as never cleaning your wipers, they will scratch your windshield over time.

there are two ways to help prevent this/reduce severity

1. clean your windows! keep a rag in the car and clean the dust off the door windows, esp during warmer weather when you know you'll be rolling them down

2. regularly clean the liner when the window is fully down. Do this often in the summertime. I use a rag with a mild solvent and jam it in there and wipe.

and in general, think before you roll down. If you need to roll down your window and you see that it’s REALLY dirty, try not to.

You can also do the “fake fur” mod that the impreza guys have been doing for years. You take apart the door to get to the WINDOW GUIDES and clean them or glue on a piece of fake fur, this helps it slide better. Check up on it once a year.

This is what happens with frameless windows. My celicas all had that "problem".

DieselxIndustry 05-01-2013 01:13 PM

Wow, I'm surprised so many people have this. It's a pretty stupid issue to have not fixed over the years though. I'm also really good about keeping my car clean so its pretty surprising if that is a contributing cause to the scratches forming. Curious what Toyota/Subaru will say long term.

No scratches on mine but they squeak like crazy when they're wet. Super annoying.

do you get right into the window crevase when it's all the way down?

i also sometimes tape a piece of scotch where the guides are and roll up and down a few times to help clean it up the best i can

after the impreza i will do everything i can to reduce the scratches.

as for fixing, it's a 26k car, you get what you pay for.

Not as well as I should but I will now, and thanks for the advice, I will definitely try it. It's not bad enough yet to need fixing but my old Eclipse never did that and it was frameless and an even cheaper car. :(

Jayde 05-01-2013 10:26 PM

Just stating that my drivers side has scratches in two different areas of the window.

sharky23 05-05-2013 01:56 AM

I've noticed two lines parallel to each other on both glasses driver/ passenger I figured it was the guides. Will the dealer replace your windows if the get scratched from this?

sho220 05-05-2013 04:15 AM

Frameless windows seem to have a lot of problems...scratches, sticking in freezing weather, seals getting messed up, etc.

Any actual pro's to going with frameless over traditional?

It looks cooler with the window down when you open the door :party0030:

THIS! :word::happy0180:

DieselxIndustry 05-07-2013 01:33 PM

Not like Toyota would replace the tints even if I could get them to fix it so whats the point I guess. Just another trait of the car to get used to.

zc06_kisstherain 05-07-2013 02:16 PM

I get that track mark too but i dont see scratches yet. i also have tints. like others said, it's kinda unavoidable and it doesnt really bother me much

chenshuo 05-09-2013 07:24 PM

Getting this issue looked at at the dealer as we speak. I have tint, and the scratch is on the inside messing up my tint.

UPDATE: so the dealership is beyond useless. They said they never heard of this window scratch issue, and it's not on any TSB, so they won't do anything. They just gonna document this and send to Subaru...

Freetime 05-09-2013 09:18 PM

There are multiple other threads detailing this as an issue with the felt pads inside the door coming off and scratching the windows. Take it back to the dealer and thump them in the head for not taking a closer look.
Just because no one else has reported it, doesn't mean it isn't a problem for you.

Rayme 05-09-2013 09:26 PM

Too many new cars owners here, it's just like the countless posts of people posting their bumpers and hood with paints chips and dings or curbs rashes... It's called having a car and driving it.

i'm probably not gonna go back to this dealer. They don't seem to be aware with all the common issues that people are having. They're not even aware of the chirping issue...
I'll leave it for now, if it gets worse, i'll go to another dealer.

i don't know what you're talking about. My family have had 4 brand new cars. We don't buy used cars, but never had a car with stupid issues like scratching its own window.

Yeah same here. My parents bought 3 new cars within 2 years and somehow my car is the only one with a random scratch on the window..

Gixxersixxerman 05-10-2013 01:47 AM

I think he means, with out saying, it's funny to hear people bitch over the most minor of things..
Bubble wrap, a filter climate controlled building, store your car, and you'll never get another scratch or have another issue

DieselxIndustry 05-10-2013 06:07 PM

Rash, chips, and scratches i can agree with despite how much easier they appear to occur versus other new cars we bought (referencing rock chips really) but a window scratching itself is not wear and tear when the car has 10k on it. That's just poor design.

Jfheisenberg 03-08-2015 07:52 PM

I got a somewhat noticeable scratches on my passenger side window... I got more noticeable after putting in my 35% tints..

Anybody know if it gets too bad i can take it the dealer and complain ?

I have 0 problems with the frameless windows on my 06 LGT.

My BRZ windows squeak when wet and sticks in freezing weather but no scratches. I usually clean the windows and the rubber seals when I wash my car.

Have you had the TSB (or the SSB or what ever they call them) done for the updated seals? Worked wonders for mine.

navanodd 03-08-2015 08:33 PM

I've got two sets of big scratches on my driver's side window. I don't think I'm going to have any luck getting anything fixed, I've already tried a few times.

I'm also getting a nasty clicking sound whenever the door is opened. Not having any luck getting that taken seriously either.
