Interior Panels Paint

I don't like the look on the scion fr-s. The fake carbon fiber alien ship look isn't my thing and I saw the fr-s convertible concept with white interior panels and I like that so I was wondering how hard would it be or any tips on doing this project.
I know I need 200-600 grit sand paper. Paint and adhesion stuff I'm not too sure about. I'm a noob. Thank you. I want to do a diy for this when I gather the right information.
Thank you.

Thank you.

Easy stuff mate. I recommend you to first take off the adhesive film first. It is a pita to do but with a heatgun it goes like a breeze.
Clean - degrease and than apply some primer. I would use plastic primer but up to you. Once is nice and dry, give it a sand with 200-400 grit. than if you use spray cans, make sure you get some good quality ones that will give you the right atomization. Sand it with 2000 grit and than go with clear. I would recommend a 2pac clear rather than normal acrylic. it would be great if you have the painting tools like compressor, gravity feed paint gun, etc. if not and if you're skilled, you can do a decent job with spray cans.

Now, the convertible has a all in one part rather than two parts so you might want to look into joining them together and fill the gap in between them.

take your time and have a lot of patience.

Good luck!

I vinyl wrapped mine with satin white vinyl wrap, it took about 30 mins and I just left the "carbon fiber" wrap on underneath. It looks pretty clean. Just don't get to crazy with the white. I've seen pictures where people have turned every silver and carbon piece white and it doesn't look as good. Just my opinion though.

Plastidip the panels white first to see if you'd like it or not

Thank you so much! You were very elaborate.

That's a good idea. I will do that.

Thanks for the opinion, I would strongly consider what to paint or not. I was just planning on the front panels. Everything else looks find to me the way it is.

Do you have any pics? i would like to see this.Maybe a DIY

Skurj 05-01-2013 01:53 PM

I'd like to do away with the silver dash panels on the BRZ. ANother mod that scares me to death that I will make a mess with painting...

SubieNate 05-01-2013 03:52 PM

The dash inserts are covered with vinyl? Interesting.

Yeah I will try to post some pictures this weekend. I was trying to wait until I received the final piece of this project but it's taking a little longer than expected. I ordered a red "86" sticker to place in the corner of my dash to bring it all together.

Tr1huynh 05-02-2013 01:35 AM

I pulled off a piece of the vinyl http://i873.photobucket.com/albums/a...a/_MG_3738.jpg
I felt it with my hand and lifted. Heat gun would make it 100000x easier
Bad photo

Oh it was pretty easy for me. I just took a tiny flat head and poked under the bottom panel and popped it out of place and then I just gently ripped it out. I didn't want to break the inserts. I did it in 3 places but be careful, I scratched my vinyl which isn't too bad since you won't see it.

200 is a bit rough if you are just spraying the dash panels. 600 then primer re sand wet with 600 and paint

Cool, mind posting pics on where the tabs are? Rather go straight for a tab than fishing around with my tool

Get the special sanding paper that is used for wet sanding. Not necessarily to do it with wet sanding but it is much easier and the sanding paper does not clog up.

If you want to paint it dont jump any step of the process and also make sure you do it in a clean environment.

You can easily take the vinyl off with the heat gun. Make sure you use platic primer if you dont want the paint to flake in 2 weeks because of the heat.

Should the primer be a clear coat or my intended color (White) I don't know about paint really.

Shouldnt really matter, but plastic primers come in clear usually. I dont think you will be using a paint with a very strong thinner anyway, so it should be fine. Just have patience and wait for it to dry as per can instructions.

Sand, clean with degreaser or IPA and off you go with the paint. First couple of them should be very light coats, even if you dont cover the whole area. wait the required time and spray again. If you want a half decent job you need to have patience in this type of project. (as in many others too ;)) Go 2-3 light coats, than 2-3 heavy coats in total.

Make sure you wait enough between the coats to dry otherwise you will get runs, and when it gets dry it might start shrinking like an old man balls. You dont want that.

When everything is superdry (maybe wait 24 hours just to make sure) start sanding them lightly to get rid of the uneven spots. Clean the part and repeat the same process with clear. If you want a deep shine professional job go with several coats.

Now, it also depends on the type of clear you use: 2K or acrylic - there is a difference and also different processes. Basically if you use acrylic use the same acrilic for the clear coat unless you let it dry several days (depending on the type of paint it might even be up to 30 days) When you get to it i will tell you more.

;)

I'll probably go with acrylic since 2k seems a little bit more expensive and this is my first test, hehe. I'll post pictures once I get to it.

I wiped it with IPA http://i873.photobucket.com/albums/a...a/IMG_3751.jpg
The spray and sandable primer I got from O'reily and 600 grit wet or dry sand paper.

Yeah I bought a 5'X1' roll from Auto Vinyl Solutions. It's plenty of vinyl to do your dash (you might need the extra, it took me a few tries to wrap the head unit piece.) and it's only like $10.
