My BRZ just got hailed on =( Help!!

Friday night after visiting a friend, on my way home I felt a couple pieces of hail drop on my car. Quickly after that I tried driving to find an overpass but as soon as I moved 10ft hail of biblical proportion came down on my car. I couldn't do much but sit and listen to my car being destroyed by the hail for the next 10 minutes.

To me the car is essentially beat to hell, this is the first car that I've bought new, I drove beaters back then and only have liability insurance. This car has full coverage and I was wondering if any one here can offer me some tips to how to deal with the insurance company on this. Would this be considered totaled? I'd like to have it fixed but from what I heard from a friend, hail on a car's history is no bueno.

Alot of the damage could probably be fixed with paintless dent removal but there are spots like on the hood where the hail came down so hard it cracked the paint as you can see in the video.

I've already filed my claim online, so where do I go from here?

video of the damage, you might have to turn up the quality a bit to really see the extent of the hail damage

That sucks!

slowbrz 04-28-2013 03:58 PM

That sucks... It hailed the first day I got my BRZ but luckily there is no damage

Skurj 04-28-2013 04:03 PM

Ouch that really sucks... best of luck with insurance..

shirker 04-28-2013 04:03 PM

You sure the dents don't make it more aerodynamic? After all, golf balls are white and dimpled all over too :iono:

But seriously, that sucks. I can't offer you any advice other than to chime in that hail blows. A car retailer I worked for last summer as an analyst reported that a hail storm in Oklahoma forced them to wholesale their entire lot of 200+ cars. Seriously fucked up their production for weeks

schtebie 04-28-2013 04:05 PM

Ouch, I know that pain.

Find the best PDR guy you can - provided there's no paint damage, they should be able to get it back to new.

wbsrazzle 04-28-2013 04:18 PM

Dude that is pretty serious. It is a ton of dents as you know yourself. I would see if they can just get all new painted sheet metal for the roof, hood, front fender, trunk etc.

Sonolin 04-28-2013 04:21 PM

I'm so sorry...

Makes me afraid of any rain at all now.

v33vo 04-28-2013 04:26 PM

I want them to replace the hood, fenders and roof. Is this something they'll oblige? Buddies of mine say the insurance company will try to get me to do PDR instead. I rather have new panels from Subaru paint matched. I'm kind of worried about the pillars though, several dents are right on the body line, looks tough to get out with PDR. if you noticed also the driver side rubber window seal is also dented. -__-

Damn. I'm not sure about insurance companies but my gut tells me they probably won't pay for brand new panels :(

You could always just go carbon fiber so it doesn't happen again :iono:

Ingen 04-28-2013 04:34 PM

How much damage?

Ps make it a race car! Lol.

Khazzy 04-28-2013 04:39 PM

Golf ball hail happened in Omaha a couple weeks ago. I was out of country and browsing the weather for upon my return, I saw that Omaha was hammered with golf ball size hail. I immediately got on my local Subaru forum and asked if a specific area of town got hit. Luckily, it did not but a ton of people in West Omaha saw $6800-$8900 in damage to their cars.

I feel for you man, my heart sunk with the possibility. I can only imagine how you feel. I almost lost it when I found a door scratch on my car the other day, but then quickly remembered this is what I have to deal with when I choose this car as my daily driver.

I hope things work okay. Did you happen to get extended warranty through the dealer. I believe there is a section in there about environmental damage and depending on your insurance you can demand Subaru manufactured panels. To my knowledge though, there are not any companies making aftermarket panels for these yet so you should be able to get genuine panels.

Pen.suhl 04-28-2013 07:21 PM

Someone should develop a raft like system, where you retrieve from your trunk and pull the rip cord, then proceed to place said item on top of car.

So you wont have to resort to this:

jeebus 04-28-2013 07:23 PM

Wow, that's quite a lot of damage. The insurance company won't try to screw you over, most likely. It's a brand new car that they insure so it needs to be repaired to brand-new specs. It may actually get totaled.

Moshpit37 04-28-2013 07:25 PM

Get some decals with your favorite golf ball manufacturer logo! :-) Seriously though that was the most painful ~2 minute video I've ever watched. That sucks. I'd see about a carbon fibre hood and roof if you're into that sort of thing, especially since the paint is cracked on the hood. But if you're set on new panels, you might be in for a battle with your insurance company. Good luck!

These threads are so fucking scary. I want a garage :\

I would have thought something like that was silly but living in the southeast and having to park outside right now I've considered it.

Let your insurance company deal with it, that's why you have insurance. They will have someone come out and appraise it and likely recommend a body shop. You don't take the car back until it's fixed completely. Highly unlikely they will total it at this point.

The hood obviously can be replaced pretty easily along with the trunk, the rear quarter panels and roof are really where things will cost a bit to repair.

New panels from the factory aren't paint matched. They're bare metal and the matching is up to the integrity of the shop doing the work. A good pdr man can honestly do incredible work. Your insurance company may go with your wishes when there is a toss up as to which direction to go but if one method is noticeably cheaper than the other, they will only pay the cheaper. That doesn't mean you can't still get what you want if you're willing to pay the difference. If you have some dents that have cracked the paint that panel will have to be repainted, again by the body shop, hopefully of your choice. Do some research. Just because a dealership might have a body shop doesn't mean they're any good.

That sucks, keep us updated though if you have time!

Carbon Fiber Hood?

BRZnut 04-28-2013 09:38 PM

Can't those dent remover places fix this up? See what your insurance says

Marcoscrdo 04-28-2013 09:54 PM

Linseal 04-28-2013 11:00 PM

This happened to my FR-S last month. Is all fixed up now. Got a new hood, roof, and trunk. Cost the insurance company $6300. Good luck with everything.

zipfizz 04-28-2013 11:13 PM

Jesus. Was the hail that bad? Or are these cars just made out of tin foil, lol.

Linseal 04-28-2013 11:39 PM

I'm pretty sure the roof and the hood are aluminum. Not very strong against hail. :(

Moshpit37 04-29-2013 12:44 AM

Roof is steel, but extremely thin steel. Hood is aluminum.

You have a breakdown of how much it all cost, specifically the roof?

Damn, less than I thought it would cost. Did you have any damage anywhere else? Pretty much every metal panel is dented on my car, the door/window trim pieces got cracked and busted, and I think it chipped my headlight a little. Didn't damage the spoiler or front bumper though, the two things I wanted to get rid of, lol.

No, I haven't taken it anywhere yet. Where is that at? Above all I want it done right. I expect the car to come back to me and not be able to tell anything happened. I'll probably have a body kit painted and put on at the same time too, lol.

I believe the roof was like $358, cheaper than I thought it would be. They had to replace the weather stripping on the doors too. All the other panels they did paintless dent repair. I can post a pic of the breakdown tomorrow morning.

Damn, guess that isn't very close to the dry carbon fiber roof. lol

A man can dream.

Bristecom 04-29-2013 06:11 AM

Wow, that's terrible. My Eclipse has been thru several fairly large hailstorms the past 8 years and I've never seen any dents on it. Do they just not make cars as strong as they used to or have I still not experienced bad enough hail? I mean... that's a serious consideration for me as my car will often be outside. I'll have to constantly worry about it being covered before a storm. :(

I say keep the dents and call it the golf ball brz.

Mikem53 04-29-2013 02:42 PM

I feel for you.. That totally sucks..
I used to live in Texas.. Had a hail storm come thru that turned
My white Honda civic at the time into what looked like a golf ball..
I heard you can leave the car in the sun.. Then use some dry ice and some dents will pop back out.. I never tried it.. But hopefully they can do the paintless repair on it.. Good luck...

zc06_kisstherain 04-29-2013 02:44 PM

dammm..that looks really bad. hope your insurance can cover everything

geeeeez! what a f***kin' mess! "paper thin" mil thickness japanese recycled steel is your problem! they are an island nation, and are forced to import any and all iron from any source, melt it all down,to make sheet steel.it's all "recycled" and the "molecular" strength of the steel is compromised. this was the main reason why japanese cars rusted out so easily many years ago. today with the introduction of chemical sealants from the factory, most of that issue has gone away, however the compromised molecular strength of the sheet steel they use remains.as far as i know, they do not make their own steel it is all recycled from compromised iron.
