Where to look for HIDs?

Just like many of you, I hate the halogen headlights on the FR-S and would love HIDs, but at the same time, I don't want to just half-ass it and get a cheap HID kit for the halogen projectors, because then I'd have to retrofit LED's as well, and that's just a lot of work.
I was thinking of getting either GT86 headlights from Europe, or hopefully get them from Scion if they can be ordered after the Series 10's are released, or maybe from some wrecked BRZs.
Where could I get them for the cheapest? And where should I go about looking for headlights from wrecked BRZs? (I live in Canada, so something specific to Canada would be helpful).

The Retrofit Source has a retrofit kit for the FRS which gives you good HID projector lenses and good ballasts.

I believe with the retrofit, you are putting in HID projectors along with the bulbs
vs.
Sticking in HID bulbs in Halogen projectors.

The cut offs and beam pattern are different from HID/Halogen projectors.

This is the only kit I'm aware of that has the projectors included with the bulbs and ballasts for a full retrofit. Every other kit it just The bulbs and ballasts so with every other kit, you'd essentially be sticking HID bulbs in the halogen housing. Which is no bueno.

^ which happens all the time cause most people don't care. However if you choose to go that route I still recommend the retrofit source, the morimoto plug and play hid kit is the highest quality standard hid kit I've ever seen. Assuming you don't do a proper hid projected retrofit, you will need to bend the sqirl finders down to compensate for the dif light pattern an stop as much glare as possible. The search function will take you to numerous threads talking about just that.

yeah its an annoyance when people do that.
I retrofitted my girlfriends civic with the kit from TRS. They definitely have high quality products and will always buy from them whenever I need to.

hid bulbs in stock projector isn't that bad.

Diode Dynamics FTW

PM Ken one of the best lighting vendors on here, has quality stuff and is one of the few who takes his ballasts apart to show quality difference between the generic ones.

Did all of my lighting on my car from him.

I just got my set from these guys. They are in Atlanta so it worked out perfetly for me. I will be doing my retrofit/demon eye/housing blackout on Saturday night...so that it is ready Sunday for IA, lol.

Trashed675 04-19-2013 04:52 PM

DDM tuning.

I've bought 5 sets from them(two for my last car, 55watt was too bright, had to change to 35w, two sets for my bike, and one set for the FRS) Only had 1 set that didn't work(55watt for the last car, one bulb's output was redish).

At $30 for a set, its hard to say no, if one goes out, just buy another.

So are these just LED's instead of either halogen or HIDs? Would there be any problems with sticking LED's for low beams?

kALMIGHTY 04-19-2013 05:21 PM

What's the best way to just get "white" light instead of the stock yellowish light. Honestly, that's really my end goal, but I do want to do it safely, and do want the mod to last.

Dezoris 04-20-2013 02:20 AM

if you want white 5000k HID. if you want a bluish white 6000k.
Retrofit source will get your the best focused beam, but you have to take apart headlamps.

Or you can get the Euro Concepts that are German made or Phillips kit which are plug and play and are higher quality but you have to bend the squirrel finder inside the housing to cut light glare.

KI_ZN6 04-20-2013 01:50 PM

Thanks Dezories, we offer the PlatinumR HID kit and Euro HID kit for the FR-S. Fully plug and play and no modifications required. The HID kit comes with H11 bulbs and all required wiring harness for a simple installation. Most importantly, we have 4300k, 5000k, 6000k, 8000k and 10000k HID bulbs in stock based on your desire for the colour of the HID lights.

Yea they are just super bright leds. Leds are only one brightness so for low beams i think they would work fine. They would consume less power and operate cooler than halogen. You would loose your brights if you ran leds for drls though.

spgrizz22 04-22-2013 09:07 AM

I would always recommend KI_ZN6! There lights are bright as the sun! Lol but there HIDs are bright and sexy as hell. I get compliments all the time.

We have 4300k and 5000k HID bulbs available for our HID conversion kits. These will give you a pure white light just like your factory halogen lights. :D
