Dang! Salt maybe?

GTM_Challenge 04-18-2013 01:46 PM

Looks like you drove it through this winter?

Supermassive 04-18-2013 01:46 PM

nothing a wire wheel cant take care of, it's cast iron...it's bound to rust especially anywhere there's rain, salt, or snow. Look at this way, it gives you an excuse to clean them up and paint them. Throw a little stop rust on them before painting to ensure rust doesnt bleed through. It's a pain in the ass dealing with rust but it's not the end of the world...and that looks like really light surface rust so it shouldnt be tough to clean up.

shu5892001 04-18-2013 01:49 PM

think of it as optional copper orange calipers from the factory

ProTekk 04-18-2013 01:50 PM

Yeah, it's my daily so I drove it all winter. Going to wait for a good day to take care of it, just didn't expect to see this in 6 months though :iono:

frslee 04-18-2013 02:37 PM

meh that sucks, might as well paint those suckers with caliper spray.

Razz 04-18-2013 02:43 PM

It's the chaep material that China uses in the cast.

Back in the day... This would never happen.

rice_classic 04-18-2013 03:15 PM

:Scotts fertilizer voice:

Heat up your calipers! HEAT THEM!

russv 04-18-2013 05:39 PM

I wonder if you couldn't take the wheels off and use a steel brush to remove the rust. I would imagine its surface rust.

Mach V Dan 04-18-2013 05:43 PM

Paint 'em.

can't tell if troll or not.

LeeMaster 04-18-2013 06:36 PM

Clean it off with rust removers, then spray primer then coat it with caliper paint. That would take care of it. :)

Trojan_SC 04-18-2013 06:49 PM

Happening to mine, and I live in SoCal. Did the wire brush thing, but was only mildly effective. Going to get a wire wheel and put some power to it next time. Don't want to paint mine though, I never liked how painted stock calipers looked personally. Just going to burn thru these brakes with a few more track days until I can get a Brembo BBK :)

Any pics of yours? Were they that bad?

CircuitJerk 04-18-2013 06:58 PM

IMO the wire wheel might be overkill for something as small and light as this. I usually use an acid based etchant (Something like Eastwood Fast Etch comes to mind), neutralize, and then the appropriate adhesion promoter (if necessary), primer then finish.

That rust is nothing. Have you looked at your exhaust? My exhaust is rusting huge just before the muffler.

Frick... A lot of calipers seem to do this. But amazingly the cast iron calipers on my 99 Eclipse don't have any rust on them and I've driven through several salty winters. Maybe there is some truth to that "back in the day" statement. But I wouldn't paint them red or anything. I love red aluminum fixed calipers but painted sliders look a bit strange to me.

what do you believe is causing this? idk,but for some reason, thought they was usin' ''stainless" pipes?

Jesse 04-18-2013 11:43 PM

mine are starting, even with no salt. time to paint em.

WingsofWar 04-19-2013 01:14 AM

very typical from cast iron calipers and its to be expected, its surface rust really and wont harm your calipers short term. Also the condition can be exacerbated by brake dust, humidity, and salt, but that's besides the point.

Heavy brake cleaner, and a brush will clean it right up, when your done lay some caliper paint on it. Then you want have to deal with it any more.

For those people who say "back in the day" stuff with iron calipers. To limit rust, some manufacturers smooth out the surface on the calipers so there are no pitted areas so rust can accumulate. Notice most iron calipers that do rust quickly are very rough and course. It also has to do with the iron materials used, some irons do not rust as quickly as others, i know there are some metallurgists in this forum and can chime in on the different grades of iron used in brake calipers.

Cheap steel, its pretty sad to see this in a japanese sports car.

Different grades of stainless based on alloy content (chromium, nickel, etc.) - I assume these are a lower grade which will show some surface rust or staining. Will still last almost forever but looks like crap while doing it...

ihaskrayon 04-19-2013 06:14 AM

6 months? I'd take it to the dealer and get new ones.

Take them off, clean them up and spray them with a high temp clear coat

$3000 for the whole kit. Quite pricey, but it's most likely going to be my first upgrade.

GTM_Challenge 04-19-2013 01:16 PM

The factory brake system has been fine for us thus far with just upgraded pads and lines. BBK, while cool looking, don't help your braking distances that much....thats more limited by your tires. The BBK will increase braking feel, but I don't see it as a viable upgrade for the money unless you're building a purpose built racecar...and even then I'd be hesitant unless you're running long races or have FI.

jarviz 04-19-2013 01:44 PM

Everybody says to just take them off and clean them... Does everybody here have their own garage or car lift? and is removing the calipers that easy? The only thing I've done under the car is an oil change and replacing a spare.

You should be able to do it with a car port, jack, jack stands and a couple feet of extra space to sit down in front of the wheel and pull it off.

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24614

But if you're not comfortable definitely don't mess with the brakes and find a shop or supervision from someone who is.

Edit: "BBK" only helps with brake fade due to heat buildup, they do not increase stopping power, as mentioned above tires will do more for decreasing stopping distance than brakes will.

m.wood0213 04-19-2013 01:51 PM

my rears are starting to rust. I need to paint them soon.

I was going to get upset, but, then I thought "oh well, I guess I will just have to upgrade my exhaust - shucks."
