TRD Intake ! CAI ?!

Personally, I have tried out the INJEN and AFE intake on the BRZ / FRS. Both does have pretty good high rpm power gains which you can feel it but when it comes to ON/OFF throttle response, I think stock air box performs much better. With the stock intake or with a panel filter, the acceleration improves at lower rpm especially 1-4k range but you won't have the pull like the after market intakes.

The first time I saw the TRD intake on the Scion celebrity race car, that design really get my attention. Bigger air box increasing intake volume, this intake will improve throttle response and power. I don't think it will make as much power as a aftermarket box up cone filter, however, throttle response SHOULD be unbeatable.

Since no one has dyno the TRD intake, it's too early to judge if it's good or bad. So I will be dynoing this unit and plus a DRIFT OFFICE tune along with it.

Here's are some pics for the intake :

I will keep you update how the install and dyno goes.

Thanks
Ben

Take a picture of the inside of the box~~~

Thanks a lot of doing all of this, exactly what we need to see. Dyno for stock and tuned!

In that second picture, it almost looks like you can take off the red TRD letters. I'd like to do that if it's possible.

@F1point4 has a picture from the inside of the box. It appears you can push them out or shave them.

In for the depressing results. Glad someone is finally doing it so I can either STFU or continue my bashing.

You can take them off but I think there will be holes. Just take peek my pics below !

in for results, i like the look

shu5892001 04-10-2013 04:30 PM

I wonder if it's possible to make the opening larger and pair it up with a bigger air duct

Thanks. I saw your post and noticed you were surprised by it being made in the US. TRD USA and TRD Japan are totally different. Iirc, TRD USA is actually under Toyota North America and has nothing to do with Toyota Japan. Many of the exhaust are rebranded or made by US companies.

Why would you go take off 50% of the products value?:bonk:

IMO it would look completely stock with it off.

You could probably add this on, but the actual opening to the intake can't be changed most likely, unless you mod it.

what is the length and width of the filter to calculate area and compare to the OEM one.

industrial 04-10-2013 04:48 PM

If this thing makes power, I'm going to get one and rice it out with my STI badges I kept from debadging my GR. :happyanim:

Mr.Jay 04-10-2013 04:55 PM

In a interview with Toyota rep at the Celeb races they claimed a 10whp when combined with their TRD exhaust system

I think this intake looks great!

naikaidriver 04-10-2013 04:56 PM

Who's going to be the first one with big-assed TRD banner across the windshield?

Scott

depends how much HP does it add? 20whp? or is it size dependent on banner?

acro 04-10-2013 05:23 PM

This is exactly what i want to see. looking forward to it

dem00n 04-10-2013 05:30 PM

If this makes good power... there's going to be a lot of sore losers.
Good to see someone going for it.

Now you just need to paint your brake calipers red for the extra 25HP.

FR-S Matt 04-10-2013 05:33 PM

Lol, this intake won't be any different from the rest. Just because it has pretty TRD letters on it doesn't give it auto HP.

Clipdat 04-10-2013 05:34 PM

Those cars also had no secondary CAT and were running on 100 octane.

that's awfully depressing info

FR-S Matt 04-10-2013 05:44 PM

I still think the FA20club, AMR, and Perrin intakes are the best performers due to design. That low end stutter that the OP is talking about I experienced with my aFe Takeda when I had it on. I swapped to the Perrin and immediately it went away and still returned the same gains and awesome intake growl.

This TRD intake is too similar to the aFe\Greddy ones. I doubt the size of the box is going to yield anymore gains than the others. The real question will be, what will the intake temps look like with its positioning?

2forme 04-10-2013 06:19 PM

Does it have the MAF vanes like the stock box?

I think everyone that wants this intake is not because they think it's better than any of the rest short ram intakes.

In fact, if it does perform anything similar to AFE, AEM or K&N, people would be happy with it. I believe a lot of people are hesitant to buy a intake because they won't want to risk voiding their warranty.

If this TRD intake provides similar gains to the rest of the short rams in the market and it keeps the warranty, then that's a WIN

That's very true.

The way the MAF sits, that definitely won't throw off the MAF readings.

It's also CARB rated for those that need to meet emissions and don't want any hassle. I hate you CA. So another win for those here with this setup.

Why do people think this is a short ram intake? It doesn't draw air from the engine bay. It draws air from the stock location, in front of the radiator support, just like all the other "CAI" aftermarket intakes out there.

I meant short ram because the filter sits inside the engine bay and not like Perrin, AMR, FA20 which sits outside in the bumper

NickFRS 04-10-2013 08:47 PM

Can't wait for the dyno data so everyone can stop bickering. You all bored at work or something?

The size of the filter is 15,5 X 4.75 inches or 73.6 in. sq.

Turdinator 04-10-2013 09:15 PM

Sub'd for dyno results

mistawho 04-11-2013 12:40 AM

I want Dyno results also! Interested in getting the TRD CAI!

Cadenz 04-11-2013 07:49 AM

You guys think Subaru would hassle me much on potential warranty issues if I were to get a TRD branded intake, or treat it as factory compliant like on an FR-S?

bdub85 04-11-2013 08:42 AM

In for results also. I might pick one of these up depending on the results.

tennisfreak 04-11-2013 10:57 AM

In for results.

Injen = sucks, crappy design takes in hot air from engine bay
Perrin = have to take off bumper and I dont want to do that
aFe = after reading about the exhaust debacle I wont ever buy their products

Not going to argue that this is the worst or best design just want to see if it yields any/decent gains; if so I will get one.
