What RPM does you drive/shift at?

So I was wondering, what RPM range do you all drive around in, and at what RPM range do you shift at?

Personally I've been shifting around 3-4k and driving in the 2-3.5k range in normal traffic. Just wondering if I'm being too conservative with my driving.

CaptainSlow 04-03-2013 01:29 PM

12,000...but only in reverse.

Honest answer...who cares? There is no right way or wrong way to drive your car. What does "driving too conservative" mean, anyway? Getting better gas mileage? Not acting like a douche on public roads? Saving wear and tear on your car? Reducing the chances that you are going to die in a fiery crash or kill someone? Drive how you want to...don't worry about what other people are doing - it makes no difference in the end.

Shift at redline every time.

This is what I do as well. If I'm going over 35mph with no engine load I'm in 6th gear. I Also try to let the clutch out at around 750-1,000rpm. It helps and I want to preserve my clutch.

iaclimber4 04-03-2013 01:44 PM

usually shift at 4-5K with normal driving. as far as cruising look at your instantaneous MPG. Sometimes driving at 3.5-4K in a lower gear is more fuel efficient than lugging the engine in a higher gear...

btw average fuel economy is ~27.6, mostly in the city, and drive spiritedly often

For normal, round town driving I will down shift if I get down to 2,000 rpm's and I will up shift when I get above 2,500 rpm's. This would be conservitive driving by an old man which I am.

7395 at least once every trip. Because racecar.....

6-Shift 04-03-2013 02:09 PM

normal driving, usually around 3.5k. If I'm having to go from 2nd to 6th (90 degree right onto highway) I go all the way to 7k in 2nd then shift from 3rd to 5th, then 6th to settle in. If you ever get the chance shifting from 6th to 4th on the highway is the most fun way to get a speeding ticket ever....you can't not wind it out.

You can tell this because the valves begin to float and not close completely so the engine gets kind of quiet for a fraction of a second, that's how you know when to shift for maximum performance!

But really, just when it seems right, probably 3,000-4,000 most of the time, although with the engine deadspot I tend to go more 4,000 plus. ANd of course at redline because it is more fun.

Tt3Sheppard 04-03-2013 02:33 PM

Between 3-4 1/2 for me. I get about 29-32 mpg which is a nice tradeoff for higher revs

naikaidriver 04-03-2013 02:33 PM

I bounce the rev limiter at every shift and cruise at 6000rpms because I am really Ken Block behind the wheel FTW!

Scott

J/K. I'm old and drive an automatic which, according to some around here, means I can't drive and the disconnect to my car means I will inevitably crash it if I try to drive like the "experts" around here.

DarkSunrise 04-03-2013 03:01 PM

Upshifts:

- Hard acceleration/track/autocross -- 7000-7400 rpm
- Normal acceleration from stop -- 3000-3500 rpm
- Puttering around -- 2500 rpm

Just wondering, do you drop it from 6th to 4th or you just go from 6, 5, 4? I want to have fun lol(:

5hairpins 04-03-2013 03:38 PM

All depends on traffic. No one on the road, 4.5K. Need to get ahead of traffic, 6.5K and up. Stuck behind a slowpoke, 2.5K. Getting on the highway, Redline.

Drop from 6th to 4th. If you REALLY need the power you can actually drop into 3rd if you're going right around 60 but if you're going 70 4th is best. The process is put in clutch, press on the gas so it revs around 5.5k or so and then move over into 4th. Quickly let the clutch out before the revs fall and keep on the gas to maintain the revs. It's a super quick shift and the quick rev is necessary to make you not lurch as much as the clutch re-engages. If you have an intake/exhaust it sounds godly too. It's fun to experiment with downshifting and upshifting. If you can start to learn where the rpm's are at each mph, you can downshift and upshift much easier while being an overall smoother driver too. Hope I helped. :burnrubber:

Hanakuso 04-03-2013 05:07 PM

As high as I can without making the sensor trip out that leads to "Warning! Danger to Manifold"

I've had my baby in the garage all winter and just finally took it out on Monday for the year.

That said, I have no desire to try and hypermile. I bought this car as my summer toy and as a reward for working long hours.

That said, if the road is clear I will shift at 5000 RPMs, always downshift, and often blip the throttle when doing so. I also heel and toe around corners when there's no cars around.

Do whatever you enjoy! The car was meant to be driven spiritedly and it won't break so easily. Also, you have 3 years warranty and longer for powertrain (5 years?). If you can afford an extra $20 worth of gas a week it's well worth it. Especially if you have a sweet sweet sounding exhaust as I have.

This, except... It does make a big difference - you have more fun driving how you want to.

I might keep it in second and rev it out in stop and go on the freeway so I don't have to constantly shift... or to merge from slow on-ramp traffic. I might putter along at 2k enjoying the scenery. I might redline it in first and second (without necessarily flooring it) then shift into 4th or 5th so I don't speed. Someday I might even try to go for max mpg on a tank. All good fun.

That's one way of looking at it. Others might suggest you're doing it completely wrong :)

Seriously though, you didn't buy an FR-S to prove how worthless a Prius is did you?

MadFRS 04-04-2013 12:19 AM

More times than not, I run up to 4-5k. When roads are clear, 6-7k, but that's not to common with all the soccer moms and hybrids.

Depends on mood too. Sometimes I'll drive it like a Prius. Sometimes I'll try to be Ken Gushi.

iketeru 04-04-2013 06:40 PM

if you're trying to save gas between burnouts: I used to upshift above 2k on residential roads out of habit from my last car, sometimes going into 6th @ 45 mph. after driving around with the MPG meter on for a while, I've found that hovering around 2.5k gives the best fuel economy (if you're trying). I never go into 6th anymore save for highways.

Chen 04-04-2013 06:45 PM

For coasting around. I shift between 2.5-3k. I average 34ish mpg

but if your worried about gas mileage. theres an indicator to tell you when to shift for optimum gas mileage.

XCIV.Andrew 04-05-2013 04:40 AM

cruising 35mph..............5th gear
cruising 45mph+............6th gear

Don Ivey 04-05-2013 10:10 AM

Honestly guys, this is NOT how to drive a sports car. You need to spin it up a bit, else you're lugging the engine, and nothing good comes from that. And, it's a good idea to go to redline once in a while, just to remind the car what it's for. YMMV,

Where is this indicator? I've never noticed it.
