Scratches on Outside of Driver's Window

I gave my car a good wash this weekend and when I was cleaning the windows I noticed some fine lines on the driver side window. There were actually 2 sets of these lines, all within a 2-1/2" strip running th entire length up the window. When I ran my finger across the lines the caught in the groves, scratches!!

I rolled down the window all the way a pealed back the weather stripping and noticed the scratches in the glass lined up with the window guides that help track the window as it moves up and down.

I took the car into the dealer today and they took the inside of the door apart and discovered the felt on the plastic guides had fallen off. As a result the guides were actually scratching the glass.

As a result they are ordering me a new window under warrantee and replacing the felt guides on both the driver and passenger side.

Check your windows to make sure you don't have the same issue as I did. Thankfully this was covered under the cars warrantee.

Adam :D

do you have a picture of what it looks like? is it on the inside or outside?

I noticed that i have two dirt stripes about an inch wide, running vertically on the outside of my driver side window. I don't have scratches i rubbed my finger and the dirt can come off. not sure if that's the same thing you guys are talking about.

norsamerican 03-27-2013 10:27 AM

This window guide scratch is prevelant on alot of cars. I dont understand why they cant use another guide material to prevent this.

EL_to_TBD 03-27-2013 12:58 PM

Could this be related to the loud window squeaking issues in some vehicles?
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11417

Do you all have loud squeaks/squeels consistently?

hmm i gotta check mine out.

I recently noticed this issue on my drivers window. I will be taking it in at some point to get fixed. As usual, if enough of us bring this issue in then they will need to resolve it with a better fix. Scratched windows you sometimes see on older cars but not 6 month old cars so I am a little dissapointed in this.

Flasher 06-17-2013 01:44 PM

In Germany, we also do have this problem.

OrbitalEllipses 06-17-2013 02:07 PM

Have a long scratch on my passenger window, but streaks from the guides on both windows.

256brz2013 06-17-2013 06:03 PM

i've had the squeaky window afew times, its super annoying. But its so random

RWDDan 06-19-2013 01:52 AM

Have had my car for a week and already see a faint up and down scratch on my drivers window that I would imagine is from this issue. 456 miles

DieselxIndustry 06-20-2013 05:50 PM

I posted a thread about this a couple months ago as well. I haven't mentioned it to Toyota yet. My problem with doing to is I already have tints and that would have to be replaced then too.

I have 2 vertical scratches on my drivers side window about an inch or so apart. :( Nice to know it can be fixed under warranty, but still a hassle. Hope the fix lasts. (Not the greatest quality pic, but it shows the scratches.)

I just noticed recently my window seal is now getting squished by the window when it's rolled up (at the top.) It wasn't doing this before. I was aware of it happening to these cars because my friend had it happening on his FRS. I'm assuming the felt fell off the guides like the poster above. I wonder if the weather seal issue is caused by this issue?

My weather stripping was doing the same thing and water would slowly leak in where it was being pinched. They replaced the driver side weather stripping under warranty though.

I just noticed this the other day when my windows where dirty it would leave those lines. It has not scratched the window or anything. I simply wiped it away, but now I will take a closer look. I am going to be really mad if it scratches my 3m Crystalline tint.

Mine are on the outside of the window, so it doesn't affect my tint, but if the window needs to be replaced, I'll have to get it re-tinted anyway.

Going to the dealer tomorrow to have the service manager look at it and go from there. Might as well have him do all the other TSBs with this car if it's going in. :D

Mikepage 03-28-2014 11:57 PM

I have scratch like this also :( driver side...

Ec1990 03-29-2014 12:43 AM

It's usually from small pieces of rock and such that get stuck in the weatherstripping.

Muskokan 03-29-2014 12:09 PM

Outside Door Weatherstrip - Multiple Concerns

Some 2013 – 2014 model year FR-S vehicles may exhibit multiple concerns from the Outer
Weatherstrip (belt molding).
The cross section of the weatherstrip has been revised to limit the amount of water passing into
the door. If the felt attached to the window stabilizers/guides accumulate water, the vehicle may
also make noise from the stabilizers/guides during window operation. In some cases, the felt on
the stabilizers/guides may freeze to the window or detach from the plastic backing and damage
the window.
Symptoms may include:
• Noise coming from the weatherstrip during window operation, especially when wet.
• Loosening of the weatherstrip from the door.
• Inversion of the weatherstrip during window operation.
• Noise from the stabilizers/guides during window operation.
• Scratches on the glass from worn stabilizers.

Do you have the official TSB for this? I can't find this online or on the forums

1Cor10:23 08-05-2014 10:49 AM

Any update from people who had the TSB performed? Lasting results?

hur1ey02 08-25-2014 04:16 PM

Bump.

Has anyone had the follow up on this? I've had this issue since day 1, but haven't noticed any scratches.. I can only imagine that they are on the way. I'm getting ready to go out of warranty so I'm having my dealer address this before then. Any advice? Does anyone have a copy of the official TSB?

stevemp5 08-25-2014 04:30 PM

This is mine... dealer change it with the tsb!

jmelgar23 08-26-2014 11:42 AM

I have the same problem as OP. I didn't notice until after I got tints done tho. Does anyone know if I can still get the window replaced under warranty even if I have tinted windows?

For sure, go to the dealer, the problem is not linked with your tint anyway...

Scratches on Outside of Driver's Window

My window, where they replaced the parts, started to cry when raining now... Do you have an idea why? Do you suggest to go back to the dealer?

Flako 08-30-2014 01:10 AM

I have huge scratches on mine , the dealer just said tough luck dirt that got in the stripping caused it....

Go back and try again or check with an another dealer.... They are wrong and they told me the same thing before replacing everything in the door...

You can also show them the thread here.

Didn't know they had a TSB out for this! Still need to take my car to the dealership! lol

navanodd 10-20-2014 07:34 PM

I'm excited to see that Subaru Canada has the TSB out. I'll head to the dealer this week. I always see TSBs but usually don't get confirmation that its (a) Subaru, and (b) Canada.

Triumphrider 10-20-2014 08:23 PM

Had both of my windows replaced under warranty due to the belt molds scratching them all to pieces. Dealer covered tint as well...probably due to the fact we were in progress of buying a new venza for the wife.

tinma 10-22-2014 08:39 AM

after getting the TSB done...my window now makes a horrible screeching noise when wet (worse than before the TSB)...will be letting the dealership know sometime this week

I got that trouble also after dealer installed new windows...

I know how to fix it like the dealer fix it for me in 5 minutes...

You just need to put some grease into the new rail.

Exempt for the driver side, If you remove the door trim, on the left side into the door you will see the rail, where a little wheel roll when you move the window up and down...add some grease on both rails, the upper and the lower...Problem fixed!

Do you have them? It should not be an issue with the updated weather stripping and guides
