Is that just how the GT30R sounds? Sounds like a jet engine!

Yes, medium to large sized ball bearing center cartridge garret turbos whine like that. Yes, it does sound like a jet engine (also a turbine).

Curious how the gtx2867 i plan on getting would sound diffrent? Gt30 sounds cool but I want something smaller.

I've driven a car with a GT28, they whine above 14 psi.

also depends a lot on intake material, design, location.. boost leaks.

The whine is the transmission.

The air noise is typical turbo noise with an open cone type filter.

The noise when the throttle is lifted is compressor surge.

For those that replied constructively, thank you. I have been in and owned many a turbocharged vehicle but none have sounded like this. Just wanted to pinpoint the difference. I see it is ball bearing Garett turbo that produces the high pitched jet engine whine. Inlet pipe may have an influence too. Just youtubed GT3076r and almost all of those have the same noise. Neat.

Oh and of course stay away from dump tubes. You won't hear anything other than exhaust :)

the anti-surge (small port holes on the inlet) compressor covers tend to exaggerate the sound btw

You want to lower the compression on the block, run high boost with metal induction tubes and a quiet exhaust. Not too hard really, just expensive! That car has a built gearbox too I think. My STI sounded like that with a CAI and tune. :)

My Evo VIII sounded almost like that.

My Mitsubishi TDO6H-20G-TD05H-10CM2 (aka Super 20G) @ 24psi sounds pretty similar to that, maybe even louder :thumbsup:

The 6 blade compressor in the GT3076r has a very nice sound to them. The smaller gt28 doesn't sound as extreme, and the gtx series turbos don't make any real noise at all.

I love the sound of a GT30r!
