Is pre-locking the seat belt a no go?
 

I had a Cobra one piece seat in my previous car. Even just using the standard inertia reel seat belt it kept me firmly in place. I am finding the seat in my BRZ to be somewhat lacking by comparison. I can't but help think that pre-locking the seat belt is a bad idea but is this correct? Does any one know why I shouldn't do this? (And no, I can't legally replace the seat and keep it road worthy :( )

I used to try and pre-lock the seat belt, but it never really worked that well. I think I'd shift or relax tension on it and it would let go. The CG lock was an improvement for sure, but the problem is that your upper torso still moves laterally. I never feel completely comfortable and relaxed unless I'm strapped in with a harness. It's a bummer for sure, but the reality in my case.

Without a rollcage, I don't think you'd want your upper torso to be locked in place. If your car rolls over and your upper torso is locked in place, your spine mine get crushed. The CG Lock is probably the best solution without compromising safety.

have you used one? How does it mount to the oe rails, or does it?

CG Lock attaches to the seat belt, allows you to tighten and "lock" the lap portion of the belt. It's easy to use and works pretty well. Definitely not a replacement for a harness.

no a cg-lock is a small device that locks the length of your belt's lap portion.

you know how your seatbelt moves through the slit in the seatbelt clip? well it prevents the lap poriton from moving. Next time you'r ein the car, pull up on your belt as hard as you can to get a feel or what it would be like.

I've used CG-Locks in a couple different cars for both autocross and track duty. Love them. Planning on eventually getting one for my BRZ too. I'm a really big guy, but have never had an issue with my upper body moving around on track or autocross course with my butt locked firmly in place with the CG-Lock. I've had Schroth 3/4 point as well as 5-pt (with a cage) in other cars in the past, but don't miss them for autocross and HPDE/PDX track days.

Ummm.. Wouldn't you be locked in place any way when the inertia reel locks? I thought they locked up at sudden deceleration or more than so many degrees pitch/roll and if the pre-tensioner kicks in I am hypothesizing you would be in a similar position to having the belt pre-locked.

i like to pre-lock during autocross. to prevent it from loosening, you really have to cinch yourself in tight before pre-locking.

my other car has a child seat holding type of reel for the driver, so i can easily get locked up by pulling belt fully out and then allowing it to retract back click by click (only loosens when you pop the buckle).

I think he was referring to a full harness. A shoulder belt, even locked, isn't going to lock your upper body into a vertical position the way a 4 or 5 point harness will.

Without a cage, I could see using one of those Shroth harnesses that hook up to the rear seatbelts for something like Autocross, but I probably wouldn't use a harness without a cage for anything high speed or involving other cars.

Be aware that a clip like this or the CG-Lock will create additional wear on the belt.

The CG lock will keep tight the lap portion of a three point harness. After tightening the lock then...starting with your seat back as far as possible, jerk on the shoulder harness until the inertia reel lock bites...keep the tension on the harness...then move the seat forward into the driving position where if done properly...the harness is now tight against your chest. I think this is what you were alluding to in your question. The CG lock enhances this technique.
