BRZ headlight upgrade, paint, demon eyes (PICTURE HEAVY)

Ok guys and gals i think its time i made a thread on this forum about my upgrade to my headlights. Ive had a lot of help from the guys of Hidplanet.com with this and as of right now im still not finished.

This is not complete i messed up some of the paint so that has to be redone and im not done playing with the projectors then i need to mount the led's and i should be done.

The point of this was to show you guys 1 what im doing and a kind of DIY if you need anything clarified please let me know also any questions please feel free to ask!! (i am three weeks into this today its not as easy as the frs headlights!!) i am also not responsible if you mess up your headlights!!

so i started off with this diy right here steps 1-15

Thank you @DarrenDriven

cars apart.

here is where it gets different brz/frs
first pull out your HID bulbs
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...BRZ/photo1.jpg

then you can take out all your wiring and your ballast some people say this has to be done some say it does not before putting your headlights in the oven.
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...Z/photo2-2.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...Z/photo3-2.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...Z/photo4-2.jpg
you see there is a rubber gasket there to keep moisture out and there is a hook inside the actual light holding the wires in place.
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...photo3-1-1.jpg
unplug your ballast and your good to put them in the oven
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...photo4-1-1.jpg

http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...Z/photo1-7.jpg
for 15 min
MAKE SURE no wiring is touching your oven!!
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...Z/photo2-7.jpg

everything pulled apart

http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...Z/photo4-6.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...Z/photo1-6.jpg

http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...Z/photo1-2.jpg

The BRZ comes stock with the Lexus RX350-Bx projector after some research i have found out that the projector is one of the best on the market. BUT it comes with a "fresnel" lens which looks like this
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...photo2-2-1.jpg
and a clear lens looks like this
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo3-23.jpg

you can do a lot of reading on clear lenses at the retrofit source. When swaping your lens out you can either have your oem ones polished or use a STI-R lens with slight modification. i chose to send mine out to have them polished.
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...Z/photo4-3.jpg

For those wondering which wires control the LED "boomerange"its the green/black coming out of the back of the headlights.

Get everything ready for paint
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...photo1-9-1.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo2-18.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo3-17.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo4-16.jpg

and then paint

http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo4-17.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo5-15.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...Z/photo3-9.jpg make sure everything important is taped off (cutoff shield solenoids)

Primer
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo5-13.jpg

Base coat
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo1-11.jpg

Clear
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo2-14.jpg

http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p...Z/photo5-9.jpg

put everything back together to admire your work
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo1-20.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo4-20.jpg

put everything back together bulbs and all but obviously dont bake anything you dont have lenses! The reason for this is to get your projectors hot make sure everything still works after it has been painted and also you are some what baking the paint on to your cutoff shield.

once this is done and everything works you can move onto your led's i order wedge led's off ebay in color red and the bases are from superbright led.com

http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo2-24.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo4-22.jpg

With lenses i found it was best to shine the led from the side
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo5-21.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo3-25.jpg

testing my output
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo5-20.jpg
http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../BRZ/photo.jpg

This is not complete i messed up some of the paint so that has to be redone and im not done playing with the projectors then i need to mount the led's and i should be done.

Nice, I've considered taking mine apart again and painting reflectors also, and regret not removing "squirrel finders" while I was in there.

Lee358 03-11-2013 10:49 PM

Rather spend little on cosmetic and more on performance.

Why did you choose to have the stock lenses polished over getting the STI-R lenses? Only reason I ask is your cutoff (assuming the pictures of it are with the polished lenses) doesn't look nearly as sharp as it should be. How far away from the wall were you?

Can't wait to see completed pics. I had no idea these housings used the RX350 bi-x projectors. I absolutely love mine.

Those are un tuned from about 10 feet i chose this route because in order to fit the sti-r you must use a sanding wheel to widen the lens holder the oem fits right back in... When i get home from colorado on tuesday im going to add washers to tune the cutoff. Should only take one #6 washer on all sides and some playing around. Either way with the sti-r or oem polished the projector must be tuned.

These must use a different lens holder then. My STI-Rs dropped right into my set of RXs. No trimming or tuning required. It was one of the easiest projector mods I'd ever done.

That might just be the difference between the RX350 bix's and the BRZ bix's. The bowl and solenoid look identical though.

When i get home ill try it... For someone who has done this mod before how do you make sure the lenses are seated correctly?

Check output, and make sure the lenses don't move around. If you want I can grab one of my RXs and take some pics later tonight.

Thanks that would be great only reason im worried is it looks like my lenses are not centered if you look at the right of the lens you see there is a little bit more of a lip visible

yes there are a lot of mixed reviews i have both maybe ill try one and one see which turns out better. i just wish i had a good place to test them!

civicdrivr 03-18-2013 12:28 AM

You dont need a pitch black space to test them. Just go about 25ft from a wall and fire those puppies up. As long as its somewhat dark, you can see the light spread and tweak from there, if needed.

Lee358 03-18-2013 12:52 AM

Well im using the car to ignite them so thats the problem i dont have a 12 powerpack

People do some crazy sh** when their broke and have too much time on their hands. Like me now responding to this post. The bolts and sprocket were paint red ! WTF !!!! Thats awesome!!! Look at that seat. Your butt must have be sore for months. Hell after riding that I would have killed for a car too. ANY CAR.. All you have to do now is add a flux capacitor petal fast enough and you'll go back to the future.

God bless. Now I want to see a pic of the bike with the red handlebar mod !

haha i will have to pull it out for the year and take a pic. that seat is actually a "extra padded" seat...still not the best thing in the world but i am looking at a black and red carbon fiber seat but it still hurts to spend 90$ on a bike seat

UPDATE

So i got back from colorado tonight and decided to reset my lenses in the holders and they are now set properly. (no extra lip on either side)

http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo1-27.jpg

i then started the trial and error process of tuning the projector by putting washers between the cutoff shield and the lens i used a #6 washer from home depot cost like $1.50 for 30 washers.

http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo3-26.jpg

i also mocked up where im going to be epoxying the led holder into the housing.

http://i421.photobucket.com/albums/p.../photo5-22.jpg

Tomorrow i will be buying a soda blaster from harbor freight to get rid of some paint that didnt come out too great. Then i will re-paint the part i was unhappy with. I am also going to epoxy the led holder.

Tomorrow night i will also test the output of the projectors with the clear lenses and the washers.

if all turns out well i should have everything sealed up this weekend and the car back together!

civicdrivr 03-20-2013 02:00 AM

Nice. I haven't forgotten about the pics of the STI-Rs mounted. Works been kicking my ass this month.

Lights look great, btw. You have some serious hangers to pull apart the BRZ lights, I thought about doing it to my EDM 86 lights but I can't bring myself to do it.
