Coasting into the gas station?

You know when you don't need gas you see one every 2 seconds? But then when you are late and on E you can't find one to save you life? Well I filled up 11.2 gallons today haha. Pretty close to empty. What's the most you've had to put in? If you can beat mine ill be fairly impressed by your stupidity haha jk

DarkSunrise 03-07-2013 03:19 PM

Isn't the FR-S fuel tank 13.2 gallons? You theoretically had 2 gallons to spare =)

yea there's almost 2 gallons that serve as a reserve tank after you hit E

Holy shit my meter is way off then I was under the empty sign. I think I will have to read the owners manual but I doubt it's much bigger than 11 and a half
Damn I stand corrected. Good to know.

MVJ1975 03-07-2013 03:24 PM

I liked the gas gauge on the tC - it didn't have "E" for empty, but rather "R" for reserve, as the tank isn't empty at that point.

I generally run down to the point the light comes on and then fill up, unless I'm travelling and might be in an area where there aren't gas stations. If that's the case I'll start looking for a gas station at 1/4.

dem00n 03-07-2013 03:26 PM

I always fill up when i'm at 1/4, and when i pump i only put $20 in. Lets me monitor my driving. Though if i know i'm traveling long distances i'll fill it up.

Eurasianman 03-07-2013 03:28 PM

Well, according to the manual, when your fuel light comes on, you have approximately 7 liters or 1.8 gallons of gasoline left. I just put gas in last week and the gas pump stopped at 11.5 gallons  The way I look at it, if you drive moderately, you're probably getting ~25 MPG (at least for me, this works). So, 13.2 gallons * 25 = 330 miles. I reset my Trip meter every time I fill up to help me keep track. I basically don't bother looking for a gas station until I hit 300 miles.

strat61caster 03-07-2013 03:31 PM

Owners manual also states that you should get fuel as soon as it hits "E", the gasoline lubricates the fuel pump and all the mechanisms in the fuel tank, if you let it sit with low fuel you could dry it out and cause premature degradation of the parts.

But still, no worries as long as you don't actually run out of gas on the road you'll be fine.

bdanisi 03-07-2013 03:32 PM

Except for today is always fill up when the light comes on. Is it bad for the engine to run completely out of gas? I assume it's not good for it and is something I don't plan on doing it but will it cause long term damage
?

bdanisi 03-07-2013 03:40 PM

Damn so much knowledge just dropped on me. Many thanks. Still can't believe the tank is almost 14 gallons.

zaptorque 03-07-2013 03:45 PM

I was under the impression the tank is 12gal. I always try and fill once it hits E, usually end up putting about 10.5 gal each fill.

HunterGreene 03-07-2013 04:22 PM

Most I have ever put in was 12 gal.

KingGeo 03-07-2013 04:40 PM

spec in Canada is 50l which is 13.2 US gal or 11 imp gal

Draco-REX 03-07-2013 04:55 PM

12.4 is my worst. The tank is 13gal US, the light turns on after 10 gal US. I think people are confusing US and Imperial gallons.

SkullWorks 03-07-2013 05:01 PM

I have put over 12 gallons in a couple of times...but I run E85 and get ~14-16 mpg because I drive like an A$$

Yruyur 03-07-2013 05:03 PM

I was burning my tank dry to fill up on e85. Was using the fuel percentage in the Torque app. Supposed to be at most 10% for changing fuel types. I was about three blocks away from the station when I found that at 2% the Torque percentage starts blinking. I made it to the gas station..... cant wait for flex fuel.

Doing the math I still had a quarter of a gallon which would have been good for another 5 miles.

I consistently put in 12.5 - 13 gallons at the pump. I go more by my tripometer than the fuel gauge. I get an average of 29-31 mpg every fill up, so I just wait until ~360 miles.

No offense, but what's the point of running your fuel that low on a regular basis? Why not just fill up when the light goes on? Unless you are in the middle of nowhere or have a preferred gas station you like to go to, I don't really see the point of this.

Acree 03-07-2013 05:14 PM

Better question is why not?

pheoxs 03-07-2013 05:16 PM

I only had my light turn on once but I filled it until the pump clicked and it was 39L

Nevermore 03-07-2013 05:19 PM

I've always made a habit of filling any car I drive up at a quarter tank, and I always fill the tank no matter what fuel costs. Just a habit of mine. That being said, it's roughly between 8.5 and 9.5 gallons when I fill up. I start looking for a gas station around 240-250 miles on my trip.

Just doesn't seem wise, especially if you pull into your garage with a half gallon left, and have an emergency that necessitates you driving and you run out of gas on the way there.

Also, living in the frozen north, running with low fuel is always a risk in the winter, since if you get stranded somewhere, your car is your only external source of warmth.

You do what you want, but I will chose to be safe rather than sorry. :iono:

Acree 03-07-2013 05:23 PM

Totally understandable. If I take a trip, I make sure to fill up before I leave and before I come back. But for my day-to-day, same route commute, doesn't matter either way.

I imagine part of it stems from the fact my last car would go 210 miles on a tank. I'm enjoying the range I guess.

Owner's manual knows all the tricks.

Empty tank = less weight = better performance. :party0030:

Different strokes for different folks. :happy0180:

SilentAngel 03-07-2013 06:16 PM

I usually fill up when the car reaches about a quarter tank. most gas I've ever put in it was about 9.3 US gallons.

root 03-07-2013 06:32 PM

As was mentioned, fuel is the lubrication and coolant for fuel pump in the tank. Run it dry for long a you will burn it out. Ask me how I know. Not on my frs, but my 4age corolla. True the di is mechanical, but there's still the old style injection.
There's also the thought that running too low increases swishing of fuel and stirring up dirt & sediment in the bottom of tank, but that's debatable.
I have run into fuel starvation issues at events if runnin too low fuel in tank. Extended hard cornering makes fuel pool off to side away from the pump pickup leading to temporary loss of fuel and power.

True, you can train a car to need less gas by not filling up the tank all the way.

tuckdaddy 03-07-2013 07:32 PM

I've dropped 12.6 in before but usually fill at a quarter of a tank for the sake of not worrying about where the closest gas station is. My typical tank is anywhere from 30-35$

kykiee 03-07-2013 08:16 PM

I've hit 12 gallons before
