Update on Koni inserts

First batch of Koni inserts are in the states and shipping to vendors and distributors now.

We kind of cheated and drove 20 minutes down the road to pick ours up.

Shorter than stock, with same stroke?

ZetaVI 02-13-2013 11:57 AM

These w/ RCE Yellows.

ATL BRZ 02-13-2013 12:45 PM

Are there instructions anywhere on how to disassemble the OEM struts and install the Koni yellow inserts? @Racecomp Engineering , @Turn in Concepts

What can we expect from the Konis plus the RCE Yellows? Stiffer than stock, but what else as far as the detailed specs of the combination goes, and how does that combo compare with a quality coilover (KW, RCE, Eibach) set in regards to adjustability and ride quality?

Racecomp Engineering 02-13-2013 01:42 PM

Here's a good thread on installing the Konis:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1219607

I'll let TIC comment on the 2nd part since they have the only time spent with Koni and RCE Yellow at this point! Obviously you lose out on height adjustability to a coilover, but since we're sticking with a mild drop and medium spring rates, ride quality should be very good since you have some decent travel left and on the softer end Konis can be pretty comfortable. And when adjusted up, the Konis can get quite firm if you need them to be. You're just limited in spring rate compared to a coilover which can easily swap to stiffer springs.

Want to try these with our Hotchkis Springs and camber plates. I too am interested if they have the same fully collapsed length as OE. It would be nice to have a slightly shorter shock for lowered cars.

Wepeel 02-14-2013 12:53 PM

Dumb question - I thought the rear was a full shock replacement? Where is the spring perch?

Kido1986 02-14-2013 01:09 PM

Subscribed. Cant wait to have some Konis on my car!

Looks like the seat for the spring perch is there, just gotta put it on the shock.

Definitely cannot wait to see how the RCE Springs + Koni's perform.

Similar question to ATL BRZ except in the opposite direction...

TiC, please provide review when you can. I'm wondering how much different/better a koni/aftermarket spring combo (eibach pro, RC yellow for example) is compared to stock/aftermarket spring combo (again eibach pro, RC yellow for example).

I was worried about it the difficulty of doing inserts but now its not looking so bad. Pics when they're assembled please!

Koni with RCE Yellows

After a few months of testing this suspension setup we have completely fallen in love with it. The ride quality is very similar to stock and the car is quite comfortable to drive making this setup perfect for a daily driver. As expected, the only noticeable difference in comfort is found over large bumps and rough patches in the road however we found that for street driving, setting the dampers to their lower settings minimized the increased roughness of the Konis compared tot he OEM setup.

When you push the car in the turns, the fun really begins, much of the stock body roll is eliminated. The responsiveness of the car at turn in is astounding! The nimbleness that the car has in stock forum is not lost with this setup. The car can still be thrown around and controlled but is now even easier to control at the limit. Whether you are tracking, Auto X, or just hooning the car is simply more fun to drive, and much faster!

For anyone looking for a setup that looks great, performs great, and feels great this is the setup for you.

I think that your observation about it only being less comfortable over really rough stuff and big hits is pretty indicative of a good damper. I've found that disregarding big hits, comfort is more dependent on damper quality and setup than spring rate, at least until you go to the extreme. :)

I foresee a trip to Cincy to get this setup (plus a little more) installed in my future.

This still in favor as a suspension choice after a couple more months on it. Planning to go this route shortly myself.

You will not regret going this route!

spdfreak 05-21-2013 02:06 AM

I had a set of these on my ms6 with a mild drop spring and it handled like a beast! If I find an extra set of oem struts this would be very tempting.

WolfSongX 05-21-2013 10:33 AM

I have a thread out in the Classifieds that have had a few people with donor struts respond to it. I have a pending deal with someone already, so it's possible that a few of these others have donors available. You should check it out.

It might be worth it to start a thread in there where people can indicate that they have a set of struts or suspension available for conversion where people wanting to do this swap can go look for donors. At the time there were 3 WTB threads for donor struts.

mit_peid 05-21-2013 12:47 PM

I closed on a deal with another forum member on a set of front OEM dampers last night myself. Hopefully I'll be on a set of Koni Yellows & Eibach Pro-Kits before too long.

Turn in Concepts 05-21-2013 02:35 PM

Keep in mind we offer NEW donor housings and install the konis in some of our packages!

Can you PM me a price for this? I already have the RCE yellows on my car but I really don't want to go to the hassle of drilling/cutting the OEM housing myself.
Hopefully you still do this, (old thread!)

ncmx5 05-11-2014 04:15 PM

Just take your time and be careful with your measurements and you wont have a problem at all doing the fronts. No need to buy another set of dampers

feldy 05-12-2014 11:48 AM

I wish I had donors instead of cutting mine. That way I could easily just swap back and forth for winter. Lowered in snow no fun. I may look for front shocks and re-assemble the stock stuff.
