Plug & Play Flash Modules

I've owned a Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T and 2012 Mustang GT and both had plug 'n play flash modules available. PowerAxel manufactures the module for Hyundai vehicles and SCT/Bama Tuning for the Mustangs. I don't know if any of you are familiar with those devices, but it would be great to get one for the BRZ/FR-S.

You simply plug it into the OBD port and load a particular tune, while still having the option to set the ECU back to stock settings.

Has anyone heard anything on a product like this for our cars?

Tansey86 01-29-2013 10:37 PM

An Accessport from COBB is what we would use, if they made one, but I dont believe they are.

Xdragonxb0i 01-29-2013 10:39 PM

Dont take my word for it.

But i though you could copy the stock map, and save it for a later use with ecutek.
Also i think you can save up to 4 maps on it to switch between.

Frostyman 01-30-2013 09:24 AM

You are correct, you can do that with your ecutek cable.

Books 01-30-2013 10:31 AM

Yes, with EcuTek you can but it's not as easy to use like what OP mentioned or AccessPort.

Foobar 01-30-2013 11:04 AM

What's the method for backing up the stock ECU Flash using ECUTek?

wWaldo 02-05-2013 01:16 PM

I had a genesis and was looking for the same thing... plug and play

industrial 02-05-2013 02:27 PM

I'm hope something like that is coming. All we have so far is ecutek and unichip. Which isn't too bad considering this a new car that's been out less than a year.

You don't really "back up" the stock rom with EcuTek, but you can flash in a stock rom at any time.. just need to know which rom was in your ecu before you flashed in an tuned map.

OK yeah that I knew. I had heard someone else mention they could back up the stock flash with ECUTek so I thought I'd ask because I wanted to get the latest flash that the dealers were using after that TSB Recall and I only had the stock ROM provided to me prior to that. After I asked this question, I have since received the correct stock flash.

You can backup the stock rom with ecutek if you so desire. just use the read rom feature.

King Tut 02-05-2013 05:24 PM

I did not see any read rom feature on my EcuTek software. Perhaps the Tuner version of the software allows you to do that.

I don't have mine handy but i could have swore it was on the same page that you program the ECU from. Perhaps you have to query it first. Either way, anyone you buy a tune from will supply you with the OEM rom, so it's not really an issue.

xwd 02-05-2013 08:22 PM

Yeah I don't think on the base user software there is a read rom function...but you can flash with the base rom.

Yep, just checked. Looked like I was mistaken.

I have the SCT Xcal for my Mustang, and find it very easy to use. Parameters such as WOT fuel and timing curves (at various RPMs), engine cooling fan on/off temps, speedo correction (for different tire/gearing combos), and others are easily changed with one small handheld device. I've been hoping that something like that would show up for our cars.

Last I knew, COBB was out of the NA scene? Have they changed their stance (again?)

Nah I dont think so, I dont believe they are going to do anything for our market. Unless they realize how big this car is getting and how much money they could make.

Same here. I loved the Accessports for the WRXs and Legacys. The whole idea of flashing through my laptop, datalogging and doing email tunes just worries me. I guess I'll keep waiting till better options come out. Sucks though because I love the ECUTEK RaceRom features :(

It shouldn't worry you.

When you get a tune from Cobb that you uploaded via your AP, that's just an off the shelf tune.

When you get a tune from @Visconti or @FA20Club.com you are also getting an off the shelf tune. You're just loading it via your laptop instead of the access port. The plus side of going with that kind of solution over the accessport as you have the capability of datalogging and sending it to your tuner. They will review your logs and tweak your off the shelf map to a more custom map that works well with your car.

It's just a different method of doing the same thing. It would cost ECUTek quite a bit of man hours and money to develop a handheld flashing unit that at the end of the day wouldn't do the job as well as a laptop. They're working on bring new features and functionality to their tunes instead.

You're right, I suppose I need to take a crash course in how to data log and flash so that I feel more comfortable with it.

You can backup the file on your own prior to flashing or have the ecutek dealer provide you the stock map. I provide it for all our customers.

The read rom button only appears on a stock car that has yet to be licensed. After you flash the ecu that option is no longer available and your ecutek dealer will have to send you the stock file.

Honestly its a simple process even with the laptop. If it were at any point tedious, believe me most people would complain about how annoying it is.
