Should I buy an FR-S?

In a few months I'm going to buy a new car. Heavily considering the FR-S and I believe it is an excellent looking/handling car, however I have many other options including a Toyota Tundra or a Mustang GT. Should I choose the FR-S? I have test driven it and like it, however it would take getting used to considering I currently drive a truck.

ib 01-24-2013 11:44 PM

Depends on why you drive the truck. Couldn't be happier with mine, but I'm coming from a '03 Camry. If you're driving a truck because you actually need a truck, then there's just no way that the FR-S will work.

ichitaka05 01-24-2013 11:48 PM

No, don't buy it. Why? Cuz all other members gonna convince you to buy this car.

cgrey 01-24-2013 11:51 PM

No.

M-17 01-24-2013 11:54 PM

I'll help.

Buy the FRS over the Mustang for fun. Mustang over truck cause its still kind of fun. But I agree with ib if you need a truck then stick with that.

FRSGT86 01-24-2013 11:57 PM

I say do it, you'll love it.

Before my FRS, my daily driver was a Dodge Ram Quad Cab. Luckily I was able to keep my truck too, since once you've had a truck it's hard to be without one. That being said, I've put over 10k miles on my FRS and maybe 500 on my truck. I enjoy driving my FRS as much today as the first time I drove it.

Go for it!

ziggz501 01-25-2013 12:03 AM

yeah... same as everyone else. do you need a truck or no? if you're a person that piles sand, gravel, rocks, etc. into a truck bed on a regular basis, then i'd say go with that. if you're one of the people that own a truck and park it on the far end of the parking lot to avoid getting a ding, then you probably are driving the wrong vehicle. if you have a heavy foot the mustang all the way. you can't beat that feeling of torque combined with decent mpgs. then again, you could always modify the FRS... if you actually just enjoy the feeling of driving or plan to take it to a track that has turns, then get the FRS.

whaap 01-25-2013 12:23 AM

A FR-S forum is not the place to get a straight answer just as a Mustang forum wouldn't be either. If you can't decide what you want, you need to do more research and test drives to give yourself more information. The more information you gather, the easier the choice will be.

rhoyle 01-25-2013 12:24 AM

Don't Buy it.

mashal 01-25-2013 12:29 AM

Lol mustang/tundra/frs? They are three completely different worlds , as for the frs don't buy it . It's a complete piece of shit, it's not fast , most of them are in shops , you won't be able to do burn outs like a mustang or haul shit like the truck.
frs sucks at cornering , tail gives away and car drifts around corners by itself ... Like wtf ?

boonFRS 01-25-2013 12:32 AM

Doesn't have enough powah and not fast enuff.

chenshuo 01-25-2013 12:35 AM

get a Kia

Accurate Race Shop 01-25-2013 12:37 AM

Everyone here spent their hard earned money on an FR-S or a brz so most of them are going to tell you to get it because after all their research it was the best fit for them. You need to fully see what is the best for you like all of the rest of us did. If you have kids the back seat is probably to small. If you need trunk space also probably not gonna happen to fit more than one full size luggage. Cars like this are great fun but can have issues with space. No one likes to regret a big purchase make sure you test drive all your options and really look at what is the best fit for you.

Its a fun little car that is fairly well built for its intended purpose. I love mine, but I also knew what I was getting myself into when I purchased it. I traded in my truck at the time for the Fr-s, but ended up purchasing another truck, this time a huge 1ton turbo diesel. So you can imagine going from one to the other is quite odd sometimes. lol. Any ways ya need to look at what you want and or need from a vehicle before you just go ahead and jump on the bandwagon and spend your money! Just my $.02

nbafandan 01-25-2013 01:34 AM

Get a mustang ... because Truck (power) + Frs(sporty) = mustang

marky 01-25-2013 01:40 AM

buy a vehicle for your needs... FRS/BRZ/GT86 sure is a great gas saver.. bought mine to have fun while driving to work and track use/canyon driving/cruising.. cant wait for summer :burnrubber: but for now eat/drive/work/learn/save $$$/sleep.. repeat.......

IloveBaldEagles 01-25-2013 01:47 AM

Debating between a Tundra, Mustang, and FRS?

Lets start here
Why do you need a new car? . And for what.

DarkCard 01-25-2013 01:54 AM

...wat

fitcious 01-25-2013 02:40 AM

dont get one...frs is super overrated and it handles like crap. the pickup might handle better than the frs

R_E_L 01-25-2013 02:55 AM

I suggest you keep driving the cars/trucks and decide for yourself. That's the only way you'll know you made the right decision for you.

HyperTech 01-25-2013 03:09 AM

if you want fun and handling, i sugest you to buy a dodge caravan.

Clide 01-25-2013 08:45 AM

I don't particularly need a truck in my everyday life. I can only remember twice when I used the bed of my truck for something over the past year or two. My job doesn't need it. However, regardless of these things, my dad advises me to get one anyways and getting anything else is a big mistake.

CaptainSlow 01-25-2013 08:50 AM

test drive one and see if you like it :iono:

Nobody can tell you if you should buy something...you have to decide that for yourself. If you're looking for a pros/cons list, there is plenty of that around. The short list is

Pro:
Looks good and handles great with good gas mileage

Cons:
Slow

I don't want to sound cruel but whose paying for the vehicle? If you're dad is paying for it I can see where he would (perhaps) have the right to try and dictate what you get. If you're paying for it, thank him for his concern and buy the vehicle you decide you want.

Is the FR-S good? The only FR-S owners I feel sorry for are the young drivers who are only buying their 1st, 2nd or perhaps 3rd car that they've ever owned. I feel sorry for them because they haven't had the opportunity to learn what a fine car they have. I've owned some fine cars in my life including Mustang GT, Corvette, Miata, Porsche 911 and every time I drive my FR-S I'm amazed at what a marvelous, finely tuned package it is.

Cajun 01-25-2013 09:34 AM

I went from a quad cab Toyota Tacoma TSS to the Fr-s and never regretted it once

FR-S Matt 01-25-2013 09:37 AM

'02 Camaro SS 35th Anniversary Limited to an FR-S. Going fast in a straight line isn't everything.

Ocala FR-S 01-25-2013 09:53 AM

OK, then don't get a truck. Not everyone in Texas needs a truck. Or a Mustang, for that matter. Just remember, the FR-S isn't a straight-line car. It's designed to be fun driving through twisty roads, so if you don't have any where you are, or don't have any racetracks nearby, you may find yourself disappointed. But, you'd be getting at least twice the gas mileage of the truck, so that's gotta count for something!

gily25 01-25-2013 10:23 AM

We all bought this car b/c we like it...

Only you will know what vehicle is right for you...you have a spectrum there...can we assume you were shopping for a new truck...considering Ford or Toyota and while shopping you saw the Mustang and FR-S now you're looking at sports cars too?

If that's the case then you need to spend some time thinking about how a sports car would actually fit in your life vs. a truck. Places you go (do they have dirt parking lots?)...the type of cars you park next to (taller cars, like other people's trucks) who are going to leave door dings...speed and control (trucks can be fast but this car is so light even with only 200 hp it'll seem fast compared to most trucks). Look in the regional section Southeast and see if there's a meet near you, see what people in your area are saying about owning that car.

SubaSteve 01-25-2013 10:25 AM

If you need others to give you reasons to buy a car then no don't buy it. You should find a car you like an then see if there are reasons to not buy it.

PNW FRS 01-25-2013 10:27 AM

Yes...

Only if you promise to not post complaints about lack of HP, Crickets, Tires, or how many tickets you've received from driving one of the most affordable fun-to-drive cars to come around since the Miata.

Decide well Young Grasshopper and the Road Gods will smile on you.

russv 01-25-2013 10:54 AM

Simple answer- buy the FRS And the Tundra and the Mustang GT. Problem solved.

jadewbj 01-25-2013 11:02 AM

I was looking at the Mustang GT, but chose the FR-S. No regrets here, would do it again in a heartbeat.

Mustang GT
- Pros: fast, sounds great, handles well for a muscle car.
- Cons: huge, heavy, fuel economy, outward visibility, steering feel, gearshift.

FR-S
- Pros: lightweight, small, handles great, gearshift, steering, brake feel, seats.
- Cons: slow, small rear seats, small trunk.

CaptainSlow 01-25-2013 11:41 AM

I was so glad when I sat in a Mustang GT and realized how terrible the interior design was...made my choice so much easier!

strat61caster 01-25-2013 12:02 PM

I have an old Nissan truck, wouldn't sell it for the world, most dependable, useful, reliable vehicle I could buy for less than $5k.

When I drove the Mustang it reminded me of an F150, was. not. impressed. I would rather my Nissan with 1/3 the hp and half the stiffness.
If you want to win drag races and spreadsheet comparisons and track days it's the best car for the money.

FRS should only compare in terms of price, in every other category you're really comparing it to a Miata, RX8, S2000, or... shit can't think of any other handling focused sports cars that have come out in the last 10 years. (Hot Hatches not withstanding)

It all comes down to your needs, it sounds like this will be your only vehicle, get used to worrying about your seating capacity, particularly abusive roads and construction, reminding yourself to fill up with premium, people rolling up at stoplights begging you to do a "sweet drift bro" or drag race them, and all your car buddies wondering why you bought a Scion and were too cheap to at least get the Subaru.*

*Note: all anecdotal annoyances

tl;dr You need to figure out what you really want out of your primary vehicle, the only useful comparison is against a Miata/RX8/S2000 or similar low weight, low to medium power sports cars. Every car listed so far has a different purpose, figure out what you want first.

jadewbj 01-25-2013 12:10 PM

Iv'e said it before and I will say it again now. If you have the means to buy a nice fun car when you are younger it is not the financial death blow that most seem to make it out to be.

When I was younger I had very little financial and social obligations I spent lots of money on cars, buying them and building them. I met some fantastic people who have become like family to me.

Now in my elder years I am not in debt and playing with cars is much more difficult to justify. When you have a wife or even a family it is hard to say I need to spend 3,000 on rims.

If you are in a place where you have little debt, financial obligation or social obligations I say go ahead and have fun while you are young.

EK_Golfer 01-25-2013 12:18 PM

Life is short, have some fun. Plus this is a relatively cheap car, so as long as you are financially stable, I say go for it.

I have owned a 07' mustang gtcs, and currently own a 11' tundra dbl cab. The FRS is a great car, however you will always NEED a truck for something, so unless you are keeping your Chevy I would reccomend the Tundra, its a great truck decent on gas for a full size and with the 5.7 will actually suprise you power wise.

This line makes me suspicious. Does he often borrow it to move/tow things? Or does he often enlist your help to move things? Or is he planning on moving eventually and needs a truck to do it? He may just want you to have a truck because he was using it if that's the case. Or maybe he's just a fan of trucks. >_>

At any rate, choice is yours. I'm biased to the FR-S. If it's on your list, and something you're looking for, then it should be number 1. It's just like everyone else has said though, what do you need/want out of the new car? The FR-S will certainly be fun.
