MAW lightweight battery kit.
Did some test fitting for Motive Autowerks last weekend on their new BRZ/FR-S battery.
Battery is 11.7 lbs. Battery box is around 7 oz. Uses inserts in the stock lower bracket to hold it down so you'll pass tech. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-K...84075118_o.jpg |
Looks good, how much does the kit retail for?

would you recommend using this battery in the winter time?

So far it seems to be doing just fine. |
comparison to FT86Speedfactory??? that kit is around $250...
|
Here is the details on the battery:
545 cranking amps for 5 seconds 495 cranking amps for 10 seconds 420 cranking amps for 20 seconds Short circuit current over 1200A 14Ah 18 minute reserve capacity with 25amp load CCA - 185 |
Those CCA pale in comparison to the stock Group 35. Have you considered a box for everybody's favorite, the PC680?

Looks nice.

Hmm..Any chance we will see an application for these Shoroi Lithium Batteries.
540CCA, capacity of OE siezed battery, and almost half the weight of the Odyssey PC545. Shorai installed in an STi: http://www.iwsti.com/forums/3537056-post23.html |

I do know they dropped off a new setup with the changes we wanted. now to find the time to fit it. |
I'd like to also mention the Braille GU1R as it is actually labeled for automotive use.

Won't pass tech inspection but it's plenty secure. I'm debating whether to move the battery. |
Very cool! The battery looks secure to me not sure why it wouldn't pass inspection or maybe get a custom tray done at a local metal shop like the griffon one. Would you happen to know tge capacity of the stock battery compared to the Shorai?

IMO, the Shorai is a great way to go because it's 540CCA and weighs slightly above 5lbs when on the other hand our stock Panasonics are 320CCA or 390CCA according to another thread on the cite and weigh almost 30lbs. The Braille posted earlier above is awesome but costs $577 and the Shorai is in the $300-315 neighborhood and still weighs about 1lb less than the Braille. Just an idea but maybe you guys can offer different battery mount kits for customer preference?

really wanna see pics of that shorai! @TRD_07

No news. Likely won't be for a while.

While the delay seems unusually longish, how has the pc545 battery held up so far?
Thanks for update. |

I went with a Ballistic EVO2 16cell battery that weighs in at a heavy 3.5 lbs. Only 500 cranking amps. |

The only thing holding me back is that lately I've been driving the car just once a week. |
I have been running it for about 10 weeks now. No issues so far. We sell them where I work and have only had a handful of defective ones over the almost 2 years we've sold them. A good friend of mine left his in his closet for almost a year then hooked it up in his can and it fired right up.
|
Wouldn't this be problematic for very cold Canadian winter?? Like, the CCA is really low..

For those interested in a smaller battery, it's a fine way to save weight without significantly affecting your ability to start the car reliably.
It's worth noting the difference in capacity. 12 Amp-hours (Odyssey PC545) vs 43 Amp-Hours (Panasonic N-60B24L/JE). Link to Panasonic battery - I'm pretty happy with the choice, from an engineering perspective. With a Braille or Odyssey mini-battery... You can't sit in the car and listen to the radio for hours or install a monster sound system (drop the bass = drop the voltage). For those applications, I'm a huge fan of Optima and other AGM batteries (like Deka, Diehard Platinum, etc). Yellow Top is 48 Ah with plenty of cranking amps and a sealed design. Start building a bank of Red Tops in parallel if you're drawing more than 2kW or so. |
I will never buy an Optima battery again. Their quality has gone to under 1 out of 5 in the last 5 years.

I've had 7 of their batteries (1 blue, 2 yellows, and 4 reds) and they've been solid. In Houston, we had an Interstate distribution center down the street... so I'd get lightly used batteries for dirt cheap. Always good customer service, and they were quite open about the hardware differences (note: internals of a blue top look identical to a yellow top in many applications). We always got 3-5 years out of them and they saw some abuse. |
