What happens when you put DC Sport tips on your car for three months...

I bought these DC Sport tips to replace the tiny OEM exhaust tips on the FRS.

About 2 weeks ago, i noticed heavy rusting on the screws and metal claps, along with discoloration on the tips even after trying to wash them.

Now before i post the picture of what it looks like, i will let you know that where i live in New York (Long Island) we only had one day of snow, even if the car was driven through snow often, the results of this rusting is just...stupid. I do wash the car often but i do it myself and i don't really wash the underbody.

Taking these tips off was a bitch...even with WD40.

When it was on the car....

I'm going to send am email to DC sport for the hell of it, i don't have the proof of purchase anymore. I traveled to two different pep boys to get these tips. 40 bucks wasted? Hell yeah...

I send you my daughters old ones, cheap

I don't get it. :iono:

Tansey86 01-08-2013 03:03 PM

LI has been decent with weather for a while, it sucks that this happened though. On the bright side it's super nice out today :)

ap5512 01-08-2013 03:16 PM

I was contemplating get DC exhaust tips for a while but could never find an exact pair in the auto stores (Pep boys/Advanced auto parts). I opted for the Perrin exhaust tips. I haven't received them yet but should be soon. I even thought of getting the JDM tips but I'm sure the shipment for those would of been longer. The perrin one looks fantatic since it's pretty much looks like the ones they put on their catbacks. BTW - were you tips black to begin with or chrome? Anyhow, sorry to hear about the tips and thanks for posting this since I am sure many others are looking to replace the OEM tips.

dem00n 01-08-2013 03:18 PM

The tip were/are Black, if they were Chrome then this...that be a hell of a story!

HunterGreene 01-08-2013 03:26 PM

Moral of the story--always get stainless steel fastening parts if you are in the north and/or there is salt involved. Galvanized if you can. The less something can rust, the better it will look.

VSGTS14 01-08-2013 03:37 PM

moral of the story is do not buy dc sports products. it's your typical junk product.

HunterGreene 01-08-2013 03:41 PM

Now that I think about it, you may be able to pick up replacement clips at the hardware store, and at least get something besides non-stainless. Brass may work as well.

GT86drifter 01-08-2013 03:45 PM

mines fine been on since november

Foobar 01-08-2013 03:46 PM

Definitely no salt on the road here on Long Island, but given that it *is* an island, there's a good amount of ocean moisture in the atmosphere that will quickly create rust for non-stainless unprotected metals.

Also anti-seize is your friend for future reference.

nonicname 01-08-2013 04:40 PM

even if they were perfect it's still a waste of money.

Ha, how ironic. I applied Anti-Seize twice on the bolts.

Guess you'll tell me to apply snake oil too? :bellyroll:

King Tut 01-08-2013 04:54 PM

I sure as hell don't see any on the bolts in the pictures you provided, so I doubt adding snake oil would have helped. Good luck with your bolt on tips.

dem00n 01-08-2013 04:56 PM

Anti-Seize can only stay on for so long on exposed areas.

Surok 01-08-2013 05:03 PM

get the normal JDM tips... why not?

Laika 01-08-2013 05:26 PM

I have the same tips and they look about the same rust wise. I actually like the look of these better than JDM tips but either way they were only a temporary solution till I pick up an exhaust.

I hope you didn't seriously expect quality from some cheap pep boys exhaust tips of all things. They look alright for the interim period till you get your exhaust. That's it.

Beyer Subaru 01-08-2013 05:29 PM

Hmmm, now you got me wonderin about my JDM tips. Next time I'm on the lift I'll check em out and see if they are exhibiting the same kind of rust.

Can you blame me for not expecting this product to rust within a few months of putting it on the car?

xjohnx 01-08-2013 06:14 PM

it's a pep boys exhaust tip, what did you expect?

DarkSunrise 01-08-2013 06:20 PM

I blame Toyota/Subaru US for putting on the tiny-looking exhaust tips to begin with.

I think we're both surprised to see this happen to our exhaust tips because we never considered rust at all but we also bought them knowing they weren't "quality" parts.

dorifuto 01-08-2013 07:20 PM

China parts

jflogerzi 01-08-2013 08:41 PM

I have the black DC Pro Sport tips. I have had mine on for less than a month and already seeing small amounts of rust around the bolt area. Good thing my Perrin catback should be here in a few weeks.

Thats not an excuse, there are plenty of quality parts from there. Its just DC decided to use the cheapest metal possible and not care about there customers.

They are being sold at a Pep Boys next to the APC Front Mount Intakes and spinning hubcaps. You can't seriously have expected the quality to be anything other than craptastic, can you?

mezdup 01-08-2013 09:19 PM

mine don't seem nearly that bad. they've been on since July i think.

But they are a legit company, hell they even have our car...

Are they owned by Pepboy?

I was just saying you cant say something is automatically crap for being made in china... those tips, ya they are complete shit

BRZranger 01-09-2013 12:00 AM

I bought those a while back and they went back to store the same day. Quality was poor and looked as bad as those OEM tips.
