Help! Headlights/turn signals don't work and I can't get my car out of park

I just installed the relay for led turn signals. When I pulled out the old relay, it snapped in half. Now my "bright lights are on" light is lit up on my instrument panel. My headlights and turn signals do not work (front or rear). Rear lights and side markers work. The new turn signals light up, but they dont blink. instrument panel doesnt show blinkers when attempting. When I turn my car off, with the lights in the "off" position, my car beeps, telling me that my lights are on. Now my car wont get out of park!!! Help!!! Seller said i may have blown a fuse, what exactly do I need to do?? i have no clue!! Now car is off, keys are out, and my side markers and rear tail lights are still on, but lights are set to "off"

i_4got 01-07-2013 02:23 PM

I had this exact same thing happen. I assume you didn't disconnect the battery when you tried installing your relay? You just blew a fuse.

Cajun 01-07-2013 02:25 PM

Ok good- sounds simple. Which fuse?? Any idea

i_4got 01-07-2013 02:27 PM

Sorry, don't remember which one. I didn't know what was going on, and panicked so I called Scion roadside assistance. They replaced the fuse for me under warranty, though I probably could have done it myself if I knew exactly what was wrong.

Cajun 01-07-2013 02:30 PM

Did u have all the same "symptoms" as me??

i_4got 01-07-2013 02:33 PM

Yup, everything was exactly the same. My instruments panel lit up and wouldn't turn off, the turn signals stayed on but wouldn't blink, side markers and rear lights stayed on. I couldn't turn any of these lights off, and I couldn't get my car out of "park".

This also happened to me when I tried to install my new relay, but forgot to disconnect the battery first.

My dad is on the way to fix this. Guess that's why they say women should stay in the kitchen! I hope once the fuse is replaced, everything is back to normal

you're a girl? and you're playing with the wiring?

Cajun 01-07-2013 03:17 PM

Lol well it looked so simple! I didn't know to disconnect the battery.

Cajun 01-07-2013 03:17 PM

But you should be proud that I at least tried!!!

Cajun 01-07-2013 03:18 PM

Oh and I'm gay, which gives me even more reason to try this myself! Lol

SkAsphalt 01-07-2013 03:19 PM

Ok...why did you pull the relay when you had power on/key turned in the first place? I did not disconnect my battery when I did it, I just did not have the key in - simple. Also how did you break it? Gentle!

Cajun 01-07-2013 03:21 PM

I didn't have the key in when I pulled out/ changed the relay.

Cajun 01-07-2013 03:22 PM

I put my key in once the lights and relay were installed

chenshuo 01-07-2013 03:49 PM

Cajun, why don't you combine all your one-sentence replies into one?

Cajun 01-07-2013 05:07 PM

Is it really that big of a deal?? Geez

boredom.is.me 01-08-2013 10:36 PM

It doesn't bother me, but it adds to thread length and will eventually make it hard to sift through information.

Rule number 1 of any electrical work, always turn off the power .
A bust relay is nothing , I work in aviation and a short or voltage spike can cause alot of damage to some expensive shit! Be careful with your car coz if you fry something big you won't be covered under warranty , they consider it "tampering".
Next time , disconnect the battery :) and props to you for trying .

@Cajun

I changed my relay without removing battery too (got lucky nothing broke). I can see how you snapped it in half. I had to pull VERY hard in order to take it out.

See attached wiring diagrams.

Go to page 383 and 385. Both of them name the fuse for the turn signals.

Go to your fuse panel (engine bay and inside the cabin) and check those fuses. Change the one blown out (the engine fuse box has spares).

is it really necessary to disconnect the battery for replacing the relay? Im kinda planning to do this on weekends.

I agree with mashal's post above. Better be safe then sorry. Disconnecting the battery takes seconds, why not be safe?

General rule of thumb:
Undo the negative first and connect last, with minor work I usually just disconnect the negative and cover it with towel so it doesn't hit something and spark

Cajun 01-09-2013 05:54 AM

I disconnected the negative yesterday to install HIDs. I thought I was gonna have to unscrew something, but you just push in a tab and pull, and you're done.

And the one time you don't disconnect the battery and accidentally short something and deploy all your air bags......you're not gonna be a happy camper......:mad0260:

Should we ask you how you know? :P j/k:lol::thanks:

White64Goat 01-11-2013 11:02 AM

Never have.....always disconnect battery. I went to an automotive school after high school and one of the guys in my class was wearing a mens heavy link metal bracelet and it contacted the positive terminal of the battery and it was also in contact with the core support and it left a real nasty burn impression all around his wrist in the blink of an eye. Lesson learned for me, and him too. Take your rings off too if you're working around the battery.
