What speed have you taken your 86 too

The devil inside took over today.
Wanted to see what the car is capable of doing, put the throttle to the floor on straight road and got up to 225km/h just over 6500 rpm.
Felt as though it could have gone a little more.
Unfortunately I did not have the Sat Nav on to check true speed.
Irresponsible I know....:mad0260:

eljefe 01-02-2013 04:09 PM

a little over 110mph... still was gaining speed rapidly but saw traffic up ahead so i slowed down. this was right after my break in. Had to see how it felt up top.

Gp1666 01-02-2013 04:50 PM

185km ...... Then started getting scared cause of strong crosswinds.... Car needs a spoiler !!

tdoggy57 01-02-2013 04:55 PM

I can hear the flamers already...

Took mine to 120 mph one time. Since then I think the highest Ive been is 100.

sav 01-03-2013 01:36 AM

According to AARTO the fastest proven speed I've ever gone is about 100kph. :D

Mathewgzlz 01-03-2013 02:45 AM

140mph on I-95

atledreier 01-03-2013 03:32 AM

150kph on a *ahem* closed circuit....

Rossi 01-03-2013 11:18 AM

My friend just bought a farm with a really really long driveway, looks very similar to the N1, hahaha :D, hit 202 kph on the GPS.

I have the older model and it has saved me a fortune - especially on Jo'burg to Durban trips... Cheap, nasty and legal! It gives you about 1.3 seconds to respond - also we only use laser in the country you just need to familiarize yourself with the laser noise. or get the fancier talking model - violently annoying in my opinion!

The 12V socket in the glovebox was such a bonus for me for using this!

Rossi, suggest you set up sprint day on your mates driveway...:party0030:

Go check out www.speedweeksa.com which features in September this year. Read up on the event from 2012.. Looks like a jol! Apparently there was a white 86 there this year canning it down the strip..

I also heard it was insane, lots and lots of nice cars there and an all round fun time, might be going this year.

Was returning back from Natal during the holidays. Average speed was between 180 - 200kph. Not proud of the speed though but had an emergency. Top speed was 205kph. Car really performs on the open road and in Natal.

Did you notice the improvement in performance on the coast? Free KZN supercharger. :burnrubber:

Can't catch me!!! Or Eish!! Or even Seriouuus!!! Works with a piece of paper with R. On it :laughabove:

brian_c_m 01-07-2013 05:25 AM

Taken mine to the 202-207 mark 2 or 3 times on the N3. Then last month I took it to 220kph on the N1. Felt exhilarating!! But yes, after that I thought to myself that if I had been snapped by a traffic cam I'd be SO screwed. So need to avoid doing that again. But atleast I can say I've done it :-)

Vic_RSA 01-07-2013 05:44 AM

If you guys keep pushing that hard we'll have to start a new thread called:

"Has your 86 gotten you locked up?"

:laughabove:

I got nailed on the N1 last year with my corolla at 152km/h = R1250 fine - R625 Aarto discount - but for once it was a real emergency!

At the moment all fines are open to 50% discount if paid before end of jan, I think it is.

Just don't get caught at over 159kph - no admittance of guilt and you have to go to court.

PrDarkKnight 01-07-2013 06:46 AM

141mph

GeeTee86 01-07-2013 07:35 AM

140 kmph haha

One of my golf buddies got caught doing a 160kph in a 80kph zone in his OPC, got pulled over and they arrested him on the spot, he was lucky his dad knew a lot of people, bailed him out and the case got dropped, no fine, didn't lose his license nothing.

sav 01-07-2013 11:41 AM

VERY lucky!! 40kph over the limit and you're screwed.

A buddy once got caught doing about 190 in a 120 zone on the bike - other than the lawyer fees and time at the court he ended up getting a R12k fine of which 50% was suspended as well as 12 months jail time suspended for 5 years.

That means if he got caught at 40kph over again he would have had to pay another R6000 and spend 12 months in jail.

Scary thing is, 160kph really isn't that fast in a modern car on the open highway.

L3P47 01-07-2013 11:53 AM

I've had mine up to 135 mph.

And the really frightening part is how easily modern cars can get to 160km/h! And then we think about the bikes - 160km/h is in 2nd gear! But having said that... I want Koenigsegg brakes!!! :confused0068: Then it's almost OK!

137mph from a dead stop on an empty interstate highway at 4am on a Sunday morning. Went about 5 miles down the road to check for speed traps and traffic, then turned around and blasted it all the way back. Stupid thing to do on a public road for sure, but at least I stayed as safe as possible I guess. Was aiming for the full 147mph, but it was too slow to accelerate after 120 and I was getting nervous about cops. Highway Patrol in the US will absolutely fuck your life up if they catch you going that fast.

The car feels amazingly stable at that speed. I've driven other cars at those speeds and it always felt like it was just about to fly into the air or tear itself apart. This thing just plants itself on the road and doesn't make you feel panicky about it.

Either way, not gonna do it again. Just had to know what it felt like once.

Going to Clarens this weekend. Will see if I can put something over then guys in Kaarkie

sieglapj 01-14-2013 06:53 PM

Just got back. The car was made for those back roads. Every evening, I would drop the wife and make a braai wood run. 160/180 into those bends, not a squeal, just grip. I luv this car. I still do not know where the limit is. My balls are not big enough. Now I know how a 911 driver feels. Still getting used to changing down to fifth. Also, I keep hitting the rev limiter in second. The motor spins so fast.

"how a 911 driver feels" ? Did it shrink your manhood! :laughabove:

I'm also planning a trip that way soon. I can only hazard a guess how grippy they will be with more performance orientated tyres!

Thanks for scouting the route!

What tyres would you go for? Ive read some stuff on road noise...
Also is no one concerned about the narrow 205's we are running?

Personally I wouldn't go too grippy or too soft for everyday use. Also I worry that wider tyres would upset the balance and fuel consumption a tad. My personal preference since 3 sets on my Corolla were Yokohama S-Drive's.

http://www.yokohamatire.com/tires/detail/s_drive

They have a fabulously stiff sidewall and the grip in the wet is fantastic. I also got over 50000km on my last set. Knocked a pothole in Eshowe and drove on the bent rim and bubbled tyre all the way back to Stanger.

what did the cost a pop for what size?
i.e. what are we looking at spending one 4 new tyres (ballpark figure)?

Vic_RSA 01-15-2013 07:57 AM

Well based on a 195/55 VR15 (slightly odd size) which were R850 each. I reckon R950 - R1200 each depending where you go.
