How do you shift?

Was out looking at new shift nobs for the FR-S and noticed there's the two types. The knob style that you can slap around with your palm like I do or the stick type you grab and move with your fist. Thought I'd start a fun thread on people's preference in shift grip.

My uncle has the Eleanor shift handle in his pony, I like it for that car only tho. Gives a more aggressive shift when you got 600hp on the wheel .
But for my frs I went with flossy short red head and I love the throw it has because of its weight

FRiSson 12-29-2012 08:54 PM

I Never pay attention to the shift knob. So long as it works. The steering wheel is something I notice. I really like the FR-Z's.

I always rest my hand on the top part of the shift knob so a knob works best for me. Currently looking for something similar to a flossy redhead or whatever it's called in flat black.

Speedy000 12-29-2012 10:27 PM

palm that shift ftw!

I like round shift knobs (have a flossy shorty), that way you can grip it anyway you want...since I have a different grip for each shift.

off topic. but for some of your shift knobs because a lot of the aftermarket ones are aluminum. I assume it gets crazy hot during the summer. Do you just change back to OEM knob or do you just suck it up?

Suck it up.

Budweiser tap shift knob lulz jk I have a 9k racing one right now it's just a see through knob like a see through 8 ball without the 8. Not really heavy though so it feels more flimsy when I shift

It's actually not that bad if you have a textured knob like the flossy grip tape since it disburses heat pretty well.

Not good for your transmission. And not to sound like a preacher but driving is best done with two hands on the wheel.

When i had my evo 8 MR i would take my shirt off and put it over the shift knob because it would get so hot.

whaap 12-30-2012 12:05 AM

I do just fine with the one that came on the car. :burnrubber:

Jason952 12-30-2012 12:16 AM

I too have the flossy red shortie, its great. I palm the shift when going 1-2 then shift my hand around to the inside of it (pronate my hand) for shifts above 2nd to prevent grabbing too low a gear. Don't need a 5-2 "money shift" !

I usually prefer a really light grip on the shift knob, sometimes grab it like a baseball, sometimes like a wine glass, but I'd like to try a weighted knob...

If your driving this car and actually have to worry about having two hands on the wheel at all times your not a good enough driver to have an fr-s/brz

Well although talking about the knob itself is cool too I was origanally looking more for shift style. The palm the top style or grab with a fist.

Can this be my signature?!?

Seriously though, any muppet who has ever driven a car at speed on a track will know...2 hands on the wheel except when shifting...and then you do it as fast as possible to get hands back on the wheel. You won't see pro's driving around Laguna Seca with one hand on the wheel one on the shifter and doing their best gangster lean...

As for how I shift, telepathy ;) (I actually looked at my grip for shifting and determined that I shift by pulling the shifter back with my index and middle finger over the top of the ball, my other 2 fingers on the side and my thumb opposite kinda stabilizing it. When I push it up, I use the same hand position but push against the meat of the palm of my hand where my fingers are attached...looks weird).

Ryuu0u 12-30-2012 04:24 AM

I have always wondered how the huge dildo looking JDM drifter shift knobs felt to drive with.

Bluecille 12-30-2012 07:10 AM

Gangsta Leans sounds like a rapper's weight lose product

It was actually called the Mario Andretti lean before gangsta's took it over. No I kid. And I usually shift with a open or closed fist around the shift knob. Every now and then I get casual and use my middle and index finger to slide the shifter into place. That technique is usually used as a pulling motion into 2nd 4th or 6th.

This was good info., and you're being obtuse. I ruined a VW bus trannie back in the day driving around with my hand on the shift knob all the time. Sure, it feels good, but it ain't doing your transmission any good.

Wrong, you need two hands to control a drift.

Cool, brah. Keep your pimp hand strong at 12 o clock  Hope you are 'good enough' to drive this car.

You can always get some nice ventaliated driving gloves to help shield from the heat until it cools down.

Two hands on the wheel, except when shifting. If this cannot be understood, then you should buy an FRS with an auto, sticker bomb it, slam it herrafrush, hang a couple domokuns off the rear bumper and buy a flat brim to wear backwards.

This is a great tutorial on the proper way to shift. I concede there are other schools of thought on this, but this has served me well for nearly a decade.

The shift knob I prefer:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7224/7...115d545d_z.jpg

Shifting style:
Pistol grip from Neutral to 1st.
Pistol grip from 1st to 2nd.
Rotate the hand on top of the knob, thumb towards me, for 2nd to 3rd.
Continue rotating hand, thumb down, for 3rd to 4th.
Back to hand on top for 4th to 5th.
Thumb down again for 5th to 6th.

The pistol grip position makes you naturally pull towards yourself. That's perfectly fine on the 1-2 shift. But on the 3-4 shift you run a greater risk of pulling the shifter into 2nd. So the reverse grip changes the angle of your arm so your muscles naturally pull the shifter away from you. That way if you misjudge the gate to 4th you end up in 6th which is perfectly fine. Same with the hand-on-top 2-3 shift, as you'll be pushing away from your body.
