Loose nut rolling around inside door?

I have what sounds like a loose nut rolling around inside door. When I brake it rolls forward and it rolls back when I accelerate hard. Anyone else have this?

CircuitJerk 12-23-2012 10:07 AM

I don't recall seeing any posts about it recently.
I would take it to your dealer.
Have you had any work done that might involve taking the door panel off?

shishand 12-24-2012 04:42 AM

i have the same thing but i feel like its from the trunk/left backseat

86_ZN6 12-24-2012 04:44 AM

were you working on the car lately? maybe a socket fell inside?

jdub512 01-07-2013 12:05 PM

It's not inside the door. I took the inner door panel off and didn't find anything loose in there. Mine started off sounding like it came from the door but now it seems like it's under the passenger seat. Sometimes the rolling stops (seems to catch onto something) but then it randomly starts up again after a while. I don't even know how taking into service will help though.

Turbo Den 01-07-2013 12:16 PM

I have the same problem. Sounds like inside passenger's door, glove box area. Haven't find the solution yet.

rbizzle004 01-07-2013 12:59 PM

Well you could be like me. When I was taking pieces off the trunk to run wires for my rear camera install I dropped a nut in the trunk lid. So now it's rolling around in there. Haven't figured out how I will get it out yet.

I did something similar last night, except it was one of the plastic clips on the trunk wall carpet. Popped it and sent it flying into a hole that goes under the back seat...lost forever.:sigh:
Luckily I haven't heard it rolling around...yet.
@Mexibeetle, good luck finding the cause of the that sound.

sdshores08 01-11-2013 01:25 AM

I had this noise, it drove me nuts. It sounded like a screw that would roll forwards or backwards depending on if I was stopping or accelerating. It wasn't very consistent, it must've gotten stuck sometimes like someone else said. I ended up pulling up the carpet as much as I could without removing the driver seat and I reached in from the side to feel around. I ended up pulling out a festoon lightbulb, like the one in the dome light. It must have fallen down there before the carpet was installed.

Jertronic 09-18-2013 03:36 PM

I have what sounds like a loose bolt, marble, or quarter rolling loose in my door. The object rolls front to back when car is in motion accelerating and decelerating. Very annoying. How should I proceed in finding this troubling noise.

The car is only 2 1/2 months old so I can easily bring it to the dealership. I wanted to find and fix the problem ASAP however.

wbradley 09-18-2013 03:39 PM

Loose nut? LOL

Jertronic 09-18-2013 04:01 PM

i want to bust this nut, and lose the marbles okay.

warman 10-23-2013 01:36 PM

This is happening to me too. I thought it was something in the glovebox, but I took everything out and it's still making the noise. Anyone find the solution?

Username 01-28-2014 05:58 AM

Damn... Add another one to the marble in the door club.

No work on the car has been done. Windows tinted MONTHS ago.

I guess I will hope that sdshore's suggestion works:

Otherwise off with the door panel.

Jertronic 01-28-2014 09:00 AM

It's been a long time with the marble, coin, bb, musket ball or whatever the eff is rolling around in my drivers side door. Is there a DIY on this procedure? It's been 6 months. I've even had the fuel pump replaced during this time and he marble is still rolling around in my door.

I had the "marble in the door" for about two weeks. Finally made me mad enough to take the door panel off, as soon as I pulled the bottom half of the panel about a quarter inch away from the door a nickel fell out. Lol haven't had a noise since.

abeds1 02-05-2015 09:39 PM

Same problem! Drivers side door. Car has only 4500 miles and its extremely irregular....I'll try pulling the door panel tomorrow

abeds1 02-11-2015 09:33 PM

Update: Nothing that would make noise found inside door panel or door, although I did find a south florida subies card in the door.....

Pulled fender liner and found a small acorn in the body panel. No idea how it could have gotten in there but oh well. Problem solved. :)

thambu19 08-06-2015 10:51 PM

Has anyone found what was rolling in your rear deck or trunk yet? I have the same noise coming from the rear. When I make a hard turn I can hear it moving left and right and when I accelerate or brake I can hear it too.

DAEMANO 08-06-2015 10:54 PM

I started to get this about 2 months back in my driver's wheel well or door. Figured it was as socket I lost a ways back until the sound moved into the door. Gonna have to take the door apart.

I doubt they are all the same. The other was a chestnut for crying out loud.
Pull the panels and look already.

I knew that when I made the post … you would respond :sigh: Thank you for the very helpful post. What's a thread on this forum without a response from you ?

If multiple people post a similar issue … Then just possibly … there is a common cause … or maybe not (i.e. A chestnut) … Just trying to find out. If multiple other members pulled their door panels and discovered the source was the fender liner then I would start there. Make sense ?

Isn't that what this forum is about ? A place to ask questions ? A place to learn from others ?

And yes … I'm sure I'll get some response to this from you … so I'll thank you in advance.

Glad I could help. Probably a whole lot more than the guy you asked that never updated in the last year and a half. If so aware of my habits you should also know I will help where ever and who ever I can.
The forum most certainly is a place to ask questions but "what is rolling around on my car? Is not one of them. Take the time you will use for another passive aggressive response, get in there and find the problem. If incapable of performing such work take it to somebody that can.
If you find something that could be common to others let us know.

Anyone found out whats the noise from?

JeremyR 11-01-2018 12:30 PM

Hate to bump an old thread but I am having the same? similar? sound. Mine happens during hard cornering. Doesn't seem dependent on speed, happens at low or high speed. Low speed happens with quick back/forth (weaving), high speeds during corners or s turns. Sounds like the object is moving left to right, (not front to back) Doesn't seem to happen during accel or decel (unless in a corner)

I will do what was done here before and check my drivers fender liner.

The noise definitely comes from a lower part of the car.

Another option as mentioned is inside the door. I've had the door panel off before, so maybe I dropped something? Will try that if the liner trick does not work.

Will report back afterwards :)

I had this a while ago when I was working on the spoiler. I had to use a pair of 90 lb magnets (covered in e-tape to prevent scratching, tape had to be reapplied frequently since the magnets tore through it pretty quickly). A bit tricky but you can use the magnets to guide the nut back along the interior of the trunk lid to an opening where you can pull it out. Need 2 magnets to get past some of the contours of the trunk, took me a few tries.

Just realized how old that post was, didn't realize someone had bumped an old thread. Hopefully that nut isn't still rattling around your trunk lid.

Jajanken86 11-01-2018 06:30 PM

I still have this issue. Mine is more like a forward and backward rolling sound, mainly low speeds. The sound comes from the passenger side. I've opened the door card and nothing in there seems abnormal. I'm not sure if it's under the seat, but I'm not quite sure where else to check. I've poked around underneath the rear seating area with those antenna-like magnets and didn't catch anything -.-

Holy crap I have had this since day one and thought it was a one-off fluke so I never posted about it.

For me it sounds like there is a small marble inside my driver's door panel. Rolls around and is noticeable when making low-speed maneuvers in parking lots etc. I don't hear it much at speed but perhaps that's because it's drowned out by exhaust/tire noise.

Mine sounds like a marble in the door as well!

Side note: cleaned all this out of the bottom of the fender/fender liner

I'm hoping this was the cause so i don't have to pull the door panel off.

JeremyR 11-05-2018 12:41 PM

Went on a drive yesterday. Dirt in fender was not cause.

Will rip door panel off and inspect inside door tomorrow.

JeremyR 11-08-2018 05:05 PM

Ripped off the door panel today. Couldn't find anything in the bottom of the door, even took the speaker out to reach the front.

Only thing I ended up with are cuts scrapes and that nasty black glue that holds the plastic in place. I hate messing with doors.

Took off the bottom panel to see if there was a way to reach the floor board, but the carpet is stapled to the plastic. I'm not about to rip up the entire interior looking for this damn noise so I think I am defeated.

Maybe the noise is something trapped under the black paneling underneath the car? but I really doubt I would be able to hear that driving the car with the windows up as clear as I can hear this noise.

Something must be rolling around in the rocker panel, but how do you even access that?

Small update:

We all might possibly have dirt or works inside our actual frame rails.

https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22962

looks like some people were missing plugs from the factory..

My car is at the dealer right now for unrelated work but I asked them to inspect the undercarriage and check for debris and missing plugs, updates to follow.

ka-t_240 01-18-2019 02:37 PM

Did you ever drive the car with door taken apart?

If you remove the seat you can pull up the carpet. I had this exact issue, something from the glove box fell out when I shut it one day and fell under the carpet and was rolling around.
