Car wont start? Anyone else?

Hello, every so often it takes a few tries to get the car started...I assume this isn't normal on a new car :(

... happen maybe 4 times total since I bought it in late Aug.

Hawaiian 11-16-2012 01:01 AM

If it's manual, make sure you're not pressing against the gas pedal. The engine floods easily.

DaJo 11-16-2012 01:03 AM

Check your battery voltage, could be a bad battery or bad connections.

wheelhaus 11-16-2012 02:35 AM

Please define "a few tries"...

Do you mean it turns over several times before firing up, or are you turning the key and just getting nothing, clicks, weak/slow start, etc?

BoostedWrbBrz 11-16-2012 08:00 AM

Happened to me once so far. Let it crank for about 5 seconds. Cranked strong but wouldn't turn over. Cranked second time for about 10 seconds. Cranked fine but again didn't fire up. Third try must have been the charm bc it fired right up. Hoping it was just a fluke.

ScionFrsFan 11-16-2012 10:58 AM

It's a auto and yes I turn it over and nothing, it tries to start put doesn't lol. I hope it was a fluke too! ... 4 times already.

einzlr 11-16-2012 11:41 AM

+1 on checking the battery and connections. If it's that, then eventually you will get stranded.

Bristecom 11-16-2012 11:53 AM

The Evo X came with those same Panasonic batteries and we had problems starting almost every car with them. When we replaced them with an Optima battery, the problem was solved. I'm not sure if it really is the battery but having worked for a dealer that dealt with those batteries, I wouldn't be surprised.

russv 11-16-2012 12:05 PM

Try giving it a moment once you turn the key to the first position for the fuel pump to prime the injectors. I've had this problem occasionally.

Spartan65 11-16-2012 12:33 PM

If it's an AT make sure it's in Park or neutral ?

Rayme 11-16-2012 01:01 PM

It happened to me 4 times in 45 days...it's been a long time since the last time it did it.

The engine cranks but takes about 4 seconds to start vs the normal 0.5-1 seconds. I'm not making a deal about it yet.

mact 11-16-2012 01:03 PM

Happend to me 1 time in 1800 miles.

FR-S Hot Lava 11-16-2012 03:26 PM

Has happened to me once also, 600km.
since then i have waited after i have turned the key to the first position for the fuel pump to prime and it has not happend since.

3essess 11-17-2012 01:25 AM

got 4000+ miles - happened to me about 3 times so far, exactly as you described:iono:

Books 11-17-2012 02:19 AM

It's happened twice so far for me but only in the morning when it is freezing outside.

Texas BRZ 11-17-2012 03:14 AM

This has happened to me a few times... I just give it a few seconds and try it again. There was one instance where I was at one of my track event's paddock area, and the car would not start even after a few tries... Some folks started to look over at me and my FR-S because of my difficulty, but then it finally started.

I don't know what to say, but it hasn't been a major issue which has completely failed on me...

I have just under 9k miles on my car as of now.

ScionFrsFan 11-17-2012 03:16 AM

This seems like another problem in the works ahg

jesperswe 11-17-2012 10:23 AM

It happend to me once, it just keep turning over/cranking. After 10seconds it started. Few miles later and CEL came on :D Not happend since i got CEL fixed though.

Agree.

Sent from my flux capacitor using Taptalk

happened to me today, parked it outside beginning of my shift, 8hrs later, trying to go home the car wouldnt start properly until a 2nd time. Ill try to record it with my phone next time.

First time this has happened at 5770kms

chaotichoax 11-28-2012 04:42 AM

This happened to me tonight with approximately 1,800 miles on the car.

Turned the key cranked strong for 3-4 seconds but did not turn over, I was about to give up and try again and it turned over strong which was weird.

gmookher 11-28-2012 11:35 AM

first time driving cars for some folks here it seems...

mhigham 11-28-2012 03:58 PM

I think its pretty normal. I usually pause for a second when turning the key before cranking to let fuel pressure come up and things settle.

Also, everything needs to sync and its a little more tricky on a high compression engine. Motorcycles don't always start on first try either. I would rather have it take its time or a few tries than start incorrectly.

Craig 11-28-2012 04:02 PM

I've had the same problem in my AT. Not sure what it is though, also not overly worried as I see its a common problem that hasn't led to much else.

RavenFR-S 11-29-2012 09:28 PM

I'm having the issue too. It has happened every day this week. It just started this week too.

And yes, I always wait for the pump to prime...

This, got into the habit of doing it with my S2000 and carried it over to the FRS. Turn key to acc, wait for gauges to come to life and settle, start car. No issues so far.

Books 11-30-2012 12:19 AM

This has happened to me 3 times so far but only on very cold mornings. If it's not happening in cold weather, I'm thinking it might be a problem. Maybe a new battery will fix the issue.

goke186 11-30-2012 12:37 AM

I always turn the key on for about 5 seconds before starting the car and I have never had that issue

Isn't that usually a problem for carbureted engines? The only motor I know of with EFI that flooded regularly is the rotary.

Does this have something to do with the high fuel pump pressure or something?

Not calling you wrong or anything, just sounds strange.

Indestruct 11-30-2012 02:54 AM

This happened to me once in 5,000 miles. I have a push button and it just kept clicking on it's own for a few seconds.

Well, I admit I'm far from a car expert, but I learn quickly. When I had first gotten my car I was having an issue with starting my frs. Sometimes it would start fine, but occasionally I would have a problem with it cranking for 10-20 seconds before starting, or starting on the second try.

I took mental note of everything I had done different every time I started the vehicle, and after a few of these starts I pinpointed to when I was parked on an incline, I would push in the brake to the floor before starting. I also noticed my heel was clipping the gas pedal enough to open the throttle.

Flooding might not be the correct term for it, but my car never had the issue again.

microbionic 11-30-2012 09:33 AM

I had it once at around 500miles, i now have ~2000 and not again.

RavenFR-S 11-30-2012 01:21 PM

I'm not on an incline. I always wait for it to prime. And my foot isn't on the gas, nor the brake for that matter. The clutch is fully engaged as well. And this has been happening to me far too often this week.

shu5892001 12-06-2012 03:00 PM

I had it today at 5400kms

s2kdrew 12-07-2012 03:21 PM

I had the same issue, I personally believe is the fuel one way valve at the fuel pump allowing the fuel to return completely.

slidethis 12-13-2012 06:59 AM

Happent to mine, at 5683 miles. it was cold and raining. It turned over it crank but it didnt start. turn the kick back. then waited, put the key over let the gauges go up, then started the car took about 4 seconds. I think its when is cold..

root 12-17-2012 03:28 AM

Had my second hard start today, this time at Auto-X. First time was accompanied by some pretty bad smell, second time I didn't notice, but it was very windy.

Laika 12-17-2012 06:16 PM

Happened to me twice so far. First time it was chilly and raining, second time it was down right cold out.

Probably about 1000 miles apart. Once at about 7k and the second around 8k.

pjb86 12-17-2012 06:31 PM

I had it on my first one the first time I started it after the dealer handed me my keys!
My replacement, after the first one got wrecked, didn't do it until 8000km.

_hollywood 12-17-2012 07:45 PM

I start all of my cars like it is a diesel, hard habit to break but i dont have any problems, also lets your car run for 10 seconds before heading out to drift, lol i see so many people start their car and within .5 seconds they are flying down the road, lol
