Dunlop Direzza slippery when cold

Anyone know proper P.S.I for the FRS ? :iono:

Mine seem to take forever to stick on a cold autumn day. :burnrubber:

They are slipping because they are summer tires. If your temps are near freezing, you need to swap to winter tires before you crash on those summer tires.

gmookher 10-12-2012 10:40 AM

i'm running 31 front and 30 rear

Mitch 10-12-2012 11:06 AM

I've got 255/40 crammed onto 17x8s, so I'm running 40psi all around.

SpeedmasterBRZ 10-12-2012 11:26 AM

If they are Z1 star specs they are only rated down to 50 degrees. Any less than that they will not stick. They dont even reccommend storing them in freezing temps.

dsgerbc 10-12-2012 11:38 AM

Lol, who could've thunk...

CHOPPER 10-12-2012 11:41 AM

Thanx !

Yep - Happens at just below 50. They do stick after about 20 minutes of running though.

CHOPPER 10-12-2012 11:45 AM

SOFT !

Hows your gas mileage ?

SpeedmasterBRZ 10-12-2012 11:47 AM

Just be careful. I totalled a track prepped 09 STi with star specs in near 50 degrees temps due to loss of traction. Even though they rate them near 50 degrees doesnt mean that it is wise to. lol.

27mpg ish stock tune vs 24.5 mpg on stg1(driving like a maniac)

not bad since I have lighter wheels and heavier tires than stock, and grippier
side wall plenty stiff at these pressures
most of my driving is up at speed, once they warm up, pressures end up higher. I would advise 2 psi higher for the local driver or someone who does mixed driving. Everything is 80mph p to 120mph for these psi settings, great for tracking in the heat.

driver01 10-12-2012 12:28 PM

Burned...

Im_SPEED 10-12-2012 12:38 PM

im running 35psi Front and 29psi rear. on 245. the star specs need to be warm form them to work the best not as hot as the XS (180f) but not as cold as the R1R(Fresh out of the Freezer j/k)

F1point4 10-12-2012 02:11 PM

I may need to mess with my PSI. I'm running 35 all around on 245s 17x9.

Thanks for the heads up about the 50 degrees. It doesn't get cold like htat all the time in south texas, just have to take it slow.

Buy winter tires or pay your insurance deductable.

Miniata 10-12-2012 06:46 PM

In general the stickier the tire (when hot and dry) the worse it will grip as the temperatures drop below 50°F or so. I've experienced this on Dunlop Star Specs, Yokohama AD08s, Falken Azenis, Hankoook RS3s, etc. I still drive them on occasion down to 40°, but just take great care, realizing the normal grip just isn't there.

CHOPPER 10-14-2012 09:41 AM

Take care - There be dragons !

A good reminder - up my way this time of year in one day it can go from 32 degrees to 70 degrees.

I constantly check the dash outside temp light , and especially if it is cold and raining I drive like I was on snow.I do not thrash the corners but what worries me is braking distance :(

I plan on driving until Dec 1 when the brine begins to be sprayed on the off ramps , then its my shitbox time ! ( an old Saturn )

Just remeber the car is checking air temps not road temps. The air might be 70 but the pavemnt may still be cold from a cool night.

_F-R-S_ 10-14-2012 11:11 AM

Hell yea these tires are deff for 80 90 degree weather..

This!

neurokinetik 10-17-2012 05:11 PM

I thought my RS3s weren't making any grip last week, when the temperatures were dipping down into the low 40's, so I put my winter tires on. That was a mistake, I think I had the stability and/or tc light flashing about half of my commute! Needless to say, the RS3s are back on the car until I see snow or below freezing temps in the forecast.

rikdrt1 10-18-2012 12:13 AM

the more i read about this topic, them more i just want to keep my 1200+ in my pocket and NOT upgrade my tires/wheels.....

gmookher 10-18-2012 12:58 AM

Blizzak WS70s. Perhaps they need to "wear in" a little, but right now, dry traction is shockingly bad. Even worse than the stock Michelins, which is hard to believe.

The WS series isn't great on dry. It's the tube multi-cell compound that gives it that characteristic. Great on ice, sucks on dry.

This is why I've been recommending the LM series to people who don't have to deal with constant snow/ice all winter long. LM still has an aggressive tread pattern to get you going and stopping in snow, not as good on ice, but dry winter performance is uncompromised.

If Blizzak isn't your thing, the Michelin PA3's are comparable to the LM's.

For those folks who get a ton of snow and ice all winter long, you're better off with the WS or similar dedicated ice/snow tire.

SkAsphalt 10-18-2012 04:19 PM

traction off = super fun times right now in Saskatchewan :) haha

Here in Buffalo, it's best to be prepared. You never know what's going to happen with the lake-effect snow we get. One minute, clear skies, but one little shift in the wind direction, and you're looking at a whiteout. Seeing as I'm expecting this car to be pretty bad when it snows, and it is my only car, I wanted to have the best possible deep snow tire available.
