I F'd up...

Getting ready to sell/trade(probably trade since I need a new AC compressor and I don't want to fix it) the BRZ and I decided to pull off the light weight pullies that I installed shortly after I bought it.

welp, I went to pull off the crank pulley and the spacer came out with it. So I said, "F that" and put it back. cranked it up no problem and when I went to check it the crank pulley was wobbling like hell. FML! so I shut it down and now I can't get the crank pulley spacer to sit flush or even close to it. It seems like I can line things up ok but I must be doing something wrong.

HALP! How do I get this damn thing back in?

:slap: - that's for putting light weight pulleys on to start with.

:slap: - that's for trying to take them off.

Sorry, I have no idea about to fix your car, however, I do believe that someone will come along soon to help you out.

I'm really dumb.... crap, I'm going to have to run for public office now.

You didn't get the keyway lined up, and likely mushroomed the key on the crank.

If you get some small files, you can clean up the keyway on the sleeve and get in there and clean up the edges of the key itself.

You're going to need a new seal as you'll tear it up trying to file the key.

Otherwise it's pulling the front cover, and the chains to replace the key itself.

Ultramaroon 03-21-2022 03:45 PM

At first I thanked and then I realized that the suggestion may have been to file the key in place.

Please don't introduce steel shavings into the crankcase. It's almost 100% that the key is deformed enough to warrant replacement. Try chamfering the opening for the keyway on the sleeve and see if you can get it to start. If it goes, you dodged a bullet. Still an awful hidden problem to pass on to someone else. Do the right thing.

10 to 1 that's exactly what happened. fml.

I guess now the only question is how hard is the steel on the spacer.

Had to do this back in 2013, customer didn't want to pull the cover. Took about an hour of filing both, wiped the crank with a cloth, lil bit of brake clean, replaced the seal, and did and oil change.

Square and Triangle files got it done

I have one of those spacers if yours is too F'ed up. I can pull the key out of my spare engine too. I'd want to pull the timing cover and make sure you didn't crack the timing chain gear, we have seen that happen before in other threads.

awesome! Thanks!

I'll let you know tomorrow after I try to get this thing to fit.

Thanks anyways. What kills me is that I was so careful when I took it off the first time. I used an extension to make sure that the spacer didn't come out and everything. I was just careless and lazy. Luckily, it was just a PITA and not a much bigger deal.

So here's the question.

When do I give up and replace the compressor? It's starting to get hot here and my car was supposed to have been built last week but for some reason they stopped production last week.

I put my deposit down December 2020. I know the longer I wait the closer I get but who knows it could be months. Do I play to my bad luck and fix it so they can call me the second after I get the AC recharged or do I try to save a few hundred bucks and try to wait?

That is how it works. As soon as I threw in the towel and said, "I give up. When it gets here, it gets here." and five minutes later my phone rings. How much of a hit would you take when selling the car without a working AC? If it were me, I would fix it with the intention of recovering some of the cost later and knowing that it would speed up the delivery of the new car.

$0. I'm trading it. For s couple of reasons. 1. The tax savings makes it a little sweeter than the dollar amount alone. 2. I don't know when the C8 is coming so selling it will either leave me without a car for who knows how long or I won't be able to sell it in time and I'll have to trade it anyways.

i forget the car even has it an option most times. as long as the windows work, i'm good.

It's this thing cars have that keep me from looking like I just swam to my destination. :bellyroll:

I'll bet the AC gets a bit more use in Atlanta than in Chicago.

Just a guess.

soundman98 03-31-2022 02:58 PM

Nah, just drive faster

Flarpswitch 03-31-2022 10:04 PM

I did not have AC until 1977 when I bought a Honda Civic Wagon. It was an add-on. I would have to turn it off if I was climbing a long grade and the temp meter climbed. Before that is was the top down or 4 by 55 (windows down and 55 mph). Actually the first AC that I experienced was on a Rambler American driving through the desert southwest. It was one of those vintage evaporative coolers that hung on the side window. It worked. Not something I would try in most other areas of the country. If you suffer a while in the heat, then you will appreciate the AC in the new car all the more. Trading in? Must be one of those deals where the dealer says, "Push it, pull it or tow it... we will pay you top dollar on your trade-in."

Ultramaroon 03-31-2022 11:54 PM

No joke. FRS is the first car I've ever owned with working AC.

We are just about even with Chicago my A/C goes on in about May and stay on until October. We most certainly do not have it as hot as Atlanta but feel it more when it is. What may be a normal nice day down there can be a sweltering hell day up here.
There is zero dishonour is wanting to have A/C i car no matter what anybody says.

Just a guess.

Here in Atlanta Metro I pretty much use the A/C year round. It gets traded out for heat a bit during the "winter" but I'm guessing there is less than 30 or 40 days scattered over the year where it's not on at least for a little while. Of course, it also blends in with the defrost as well.

There are days I could use the windows, but the road noise is already bad enough with adding the wind buffeting. If I wanted all that noise I would have bought a convertible.

THIS^
I spend an hour and a half every work day on the highway doing between 70 and 80MPH. The last thing in the world I want is the noise, dust and diesel fumes from the bazillion trucks coming in an open window.
A/C and recirculate are my friends!

It's the pollen that's getting me now. I don't normally get bothered by it but the volume is so heavy my eyes get a little irritated and even just a little break the interior is absolutely covered in pollen right now.

Yea, green powder season is definitely in full bloom here. My car looks like a crime scene that has been dusted by CSI. Every place on the external surface that has been touched by a hand shows clear green fingerprints out of a base of green powder.

I have been down that way a few times in the spring. It is horrendous!

AC is a good thing. Never again will I go without. The saving grace in the Southwest is the dry air. Humid heat is torture. I remember back in '85, arriving at the airport on Guam at four in the morning. I was overcome with grief when the thick, hot air wrapped around me like a wet blanket.

That sounds like the 40 years I lived in Houston. A local DJ referred to is as walking out of the house naked and being immediately wrapped head to toe in greased Saran wrap. He was wrong, it was worse.

Flarpswitch 04-01-2022 05:49 PM

Having a cabin air filter is a step up. Before that, the evaporator in your AC was a petrie dish of all forms of pathogens.
"Do you smell something funny?"
"No. But, you'll get used to it."
"Really! It smells like something died in your vent."
News Flash: Something did crawl in there and died.

A friend in Florida has an Outback that he loves. Over time he became less enamored with it and he said that the AC could barely keep up with the heat and humidity (Gulf Coast). The last thing that popped into my mind after considering everything else was, "Did you check the cabin air filter?" "What's that?", he asked. Talked him through removing it and behold: enough fuzz and debris to fill a small pillow. A quick trip to the parts store and it's, "I love my Subaru Outback."

AC: Don't leave home without it.

humid heat is less 'wet blanket' and more 'tight-fitting t-shirt dunked in used motor oil'

Yeah. It's awful when sweat just hangs on all slimy-feeling. Much better comparison, I agree. Saran-wrap is also better.

Flarpswitch 04-03-2022 05:19 PM

You are in a place where the humidity is in single digits but the temperature is in triple digits and someone says,”But, it’s a dry heat.” Which do you choose: a verbal or physical assault? Keep in mind that a jury of your peers wouldn’t find you guilty on any account. More than three decades ago, the company that I worked for was making noises that told me that I might get an unrequested transfer to Phoenix. I remembered the first time we passed through Phoenix and stopped for gas. My wife refused to get out of the car and insisted that the AC get going ASAP. We didn’t stop until we got to Flagstaff to spend the night. Anyway, preemptively put in my transfer papers, got out my compass to get a bearing on Phoenix, turned 180° in the other direction and did not stop until I felt moss growing on me and every third car on the road is a Subaru.
