Mike's 2022 BRZ

Let a new journey begin.

I have no idea what direction I'll eventually take this car, but I'm certain it'll involve some sort of performance driving! Y'all need to crack the whip and regularly tag me here, so I keep the post updated.

???? - Call Irvine Subaru and request that they order me a new BRZ the moment it is available, and leave a standing deposit. I've already purchased many cars from them, and they know I'm committed.

28 Oct, 2021 - Get a message from Irvine Subaru that my BRZ has arrived and is ready for pickup. Unfortunately have to work and won't make it.

29 Oct, 2021, 9PM - Took delivery after hours, courtesy of Asher who stayed late so I could sign for the car. I attempt to connect Ecutek and an AIM Solo DL when I get home to see what data I can get. Neither are able to at this time. 6 miles on the ODO at this time.

30 Oct, 2021, 4AM - Show up at CSG to swap in CP brake pads, Endless brake fluid, and swap the terrible factory lug nuts for some RAYS Lug Nuts. CSG lug nuts have been backordered for a while, so I opted for the next best thing.

30 Oct, 2021, 6AM - hit ACH (Angeles Crest Highway) on the way up to Streets of Willow for 86CUP, to feel the car out.. Car is slightly understeery as expected. I get worried that I'm perhaps cycling the tires a bit much. I also spend some time bedding the brakes, and progressively increase engine load and RPM, to do simulated dyno break-in.

30 Oct, 2022, 8AM - I get to SoWS, dump everything out of the car in a rush, and head on track. The car definitely feels softer than before. It's easily a superior everyday driver compared to the 1st gen car.

2 Nov, 2022 - CSG FLA V2 Prototypes installed, corner balanced, and aligned.

4 Nov, 2022 - Car is being flogged at SpeedVegas, not by me. Brakes validated. Coilover may get another revision.

6 Nov, 2022 - Auto Club Speedway with 86CUP. Easily hit 6th gear, even with a passenger. Very used stock tires able to stay flat in oval without issue.

8 Nov, 2022 - Dropped car off at OEM Audio+

27 Nov, 2022 - STR38 private track day at Buttonwillow. Suspension testing with very, very dead tires.

12 Dec, 2022 - 86CUP Round 12. Mixed drivers. CP pads showing about 4.5mm of wear after ~7 hours (rounded down) of track use.

I made it all of 7 hours stock.

On the way home.... I thought the rearview mirror was atrocious and I need another JDM frameless. I debated taking the one off of my 17 BRZ. Errors were made; I should have pre-emptively ordered.

Less than 12 hours after getting the car, it's at Streets of Willow. 146.5 miles on the clock.

What’s your suspension plan?

TBD.

I'll probably try all 3 of:

- CSG spec Flex A
- CSG prototype
- JRZ RS1

PulsarBeeerz 10-31-2021 10:12 PM

Nice! Can't wait till its broken in and hits the CSG dyno and NA development begins; in time of course.

jflogerzi 11-01-2021 12:25 AM

Subbed! I am committed to the gen 1 platform

Designed with the '22 in mind, or bolt on from the 12-20 cars? Either way, super excited to see where this goes!

nikitopo 11-01-2021 03:31 AM

Sub'd. Good luck!

Are the rear tow points the same distance apart? Asking for Slambert twin hitch compatibility.

Wondering if your current CSG Spec Touring 86 Comp Exhaust by MXP fits?

Sub'd, thank you for posting and updating us! Excited to see more.

Does the red and green paint on the rotors turn a different color at different temps to give you a max temp during a session?

CSG FLA V2 prototype installed, corner balanced, and aligned.

Car now rides even smoother for most road elements, with the HBS manifesting only over (very) large dips, where it's definitely guaranteeing preventing any sort of bottoming out. Drove around on a loop identical to what I do when doing local testing for OEMs.

Will need to test balance at the track, as there's no way to do it safely on the street, but... I'm excited.

Exactly that.

430C for green to turn white
610C for pink (red) to turn white.

The CP is designed as a street pad when it comes to friction, but has the capacity to handle race temps. It pairs well with lower grip tires, but stickier tires designed for track/race use should be paired with a pad designed for that grip level, such as a C1/C2/C21, etc.

The rotors turned the green paint white while driving on stock tires. No blatent use of ABS.

I suspect it does. I might grab mine off my 17 to try fitting on the 22.

My very imperfect/imprecise measurement with a tape measure says yes.

From CSG.

I use a mix of AP, Alcon, and Omega, based on whatever is available.

You guys better send Mike a bunch of Uber Eats or Door Dash gift cards

Any thoughts on the aluminum knuckle? Toyota made some stink that they were sticking with the heavier iron knuckle due to steering feel but wondering if that’s just marketing nonsense.

Also is it confirmed that first gen coilovers are a direct fit on this second gen? BBKs?

Almost any coilover should be a direct fit.

BBK still TBD.

Aluminum vs Steel wheels, engine blocks, and now, knuckles. Probably little to no real real world difference. If the Aluminum knuckle was flexing like that, it's fatigue life would be very, very short.

@CSG Mike any particular reason you chose the BRZ over the GR86?

It arrived first. I ordered both, with the intention of taking whichever is here earlier. The dealers are aware and are okay with me doing that, as whichever one I don't take, I'll already have a qualified buyer for.

Figured it was something objective like that :)

Pictures of the underbody when you get a chance would be great. I believe Subaru included all the aero panels as standard.

Excited to see you push the limits of this platform and identify its weaknesses. Thanks for your work.

Are the knuckle bolts the same? Same OEM crash bolt for additional camber like the first gen?

Same or effectively same.

I hit my camber target without the use of different bolts.

Ahh you got yours at Irvine? They have another white one on the floor I've been inquiring about...$5k markup though.

Curious to see what you do with his one.

Yessir.

I've bought many cars from them; I take care of them, and they take care of me.

Hearty congratulations Mike. Will follow with interest. Any chance a PD SC like Edelbrock or Harrop will bolt onto the new engine without mods?

Based on some layout changes, some changes to the superchargers may be needed.

I'll let the respective companies confirm/deny when they have a chance.

Any chance the stock struts/shocks bolt up to the first gen car?
