Strange Quirks

These aren't so much complaints but rather strange things I've noticed about the car. I was curious if anyone else noticed as well.

The first one is that bug love the car. I'm not talking about bugs loving to go splat on the bumper, but bugs just loving the car itself. Every time come out to my car there will be like a dozen bugs just chilling on the paint lol... One morning I came out to my car after a rain and I noticed dead ants in the droplets of water on the roof of my car. Anyone else experience this?

The last thing is the static electricity. Every time I get out of my car and go to close the door I get a massive zap. These aren't small zaps either, they're fairly shocking. I get shocked probably 3 times a week and the catch me off guard every time. It must be the fabric or something... funny this is that my passengers don't get shocked.

In regard to the bugs --

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11445

May not be your exact problem though..

Aznek 08-14-2012 07:37 PM

I remember reading about his gnat problem but the bugs aren't entering the vehicle. It seems like they just enjoy hanging out on the paint.

MVJ1975 08-14-2012 07:39 PM

Yeah, I've noticed bugs chilling out on mine too.

No issues with static, though, but it's really humid here now. Might be different in the winter.

Are you using a nice wax? Some of the ingredients tend to attract insects.

sdshores08 08-14-2012 07:55 PM

Maybe try holding the door frame as you get out of the car. It might discharge the static you build up as you slide off the seat

Nope, it only has Opticoat on it right now.

It's the door frame that's giving me the shock. As I go to close the door I get the zap. I've always had leather seats though, never had seats with fabric quite as soft as these. I'm surprised no one else gets shocked.

What color is the car?

chulooz 08-14-2012 08:34 PM

What door frames? This cars are frameless?

Shagaliscious 08-14-2012 08:43 PM

I have walked into a spider web the last 2 mornings going to my car. I haven't noticed a lot of bugs though.

Haven't been shocked once in the FR-S, and I got shocked exactly as you describe in my previous car getting out nearly every time. It was a good strong shock too.

I get shocked every time I get out of the car. EVERY TIME. I usually get laughed at by my passenger because it's audible.

The car is white. It's almost as if they're mesmerized by the paint. I go to shoo them away and they just sit there. Not sure how ants ended up on the roof though...

Hah! Mine are audible too but no one else ever hears it. Do you wear wool dress pants?

Mine is a magnet for bees. I had one clinging onto my driver side mirror for nearly 30 miles at freeway speeds. White as well.

On occasion, but it's happened in jeans as well.

ShoGun 08-14-2012 09:15 PM

I have Dragonflies circling around my car ALL the time. Maybe its something about the sparkles in the SWP paint or the reflected UV rays from the sun.

wbradley 08-14-2012 09:16 PM

Firstly, There is something, possibly your clothing or hair are building a static charge when in contact with the upholstery or interior. There is a static discharge strap you can hang under your car but I haven't seen one for years. If touching the door or window results in static discharge try touching that surface BEFORE you open the door to ground the charge.

Regarding the bugs, and considering the recent heat wave perhaps the white surface is cooler and therefore attracts them. I am sure they wouldn't last long on my raven colour hood!

My car attracts chicks. Probably the hot colour.

To the guy with the dragon flies, perhaps you are around a pond or lake a lot.

It's actually when you close the door that you get the shock. Open door, exit vehicle, close door--ZAP. It's not really a huge deal, more of an oddity.

I had mine Optiguarded and bugs hang out on mine too. More so than other cars next to me.

You could ground the car. Dangle a small copper wire from the frame down to the road. It's not perfect but it might just help discharge the static.

I'm not too concerned about the shock to be honest, I was just curious if anyone else was getting it as well.

I think I know the reason. Since the doors open so wide, I have to open the door to the first "open spot" which leave barely enough room to get out. Combine that with the fact that the car seats are so low, I end up having to tuck my legs towards my chest and pivot on my butt to get my feet to point towards the door. This pivoting of my butt creates static electricity from rubbing the seats and thus shock! Is this how you exit the car as well Gen?

Yeah it's odd isn't it? I went to get some gas and noticed, while pumping gas, a big white spider bro just hanging out on the roof.

Not typically. Years of owning a Lotus have caused me to do the one leg out, duck under the door frame and stand. My theory was it had more to do with the aerodynamics of the car. I was thinking a charge develops on the door/window when driven and discharges when touched. I could be way off base.

I've noticed different shoes can affect if I get shocked or not. Try wearing different ones and see if it still happens.

I've notices the bug thing too, every time I wash it they are all over

sdshores08 08-15-2012 02:57 AM

I meant hang onto a metal part as you're swiveling in your seat in order to discharge the static as you're generating it, so it doesn't build up. Not sure if it'll work, just throwing it out there :)

tdoggy57 08-15-2012 03:18 AM

When I come out to go to work at night I always have bugs on my Asphalt. As soon as I open the door, I've had a few moths fly off the car and actually go inside. It pisses me off lol.

ihaskrayon 08-15-2012 03:19 AM

As far as the bug thing. It's the color of the car. My SWP WRX attracts more bugs than any other car I've owned. There was a topic about when SWP came out in 07 for the WRX and STi.

Try touching the ground with your hand after you open the door but before you get out.
That will earth the static without giving you a shock and when you get out and touch the door you wont be the conduit for the car to earth itself as you were before. Works for me.

robo_robb 08-15-2012 09:40 AM

I get the bejesus shocked out of me every time I come out of the car and make contact with the metal keyhole as I shut the door.
