Do we have the most useless mechanical speedometer ever made?
I was looking at this thing today and you have to be doing 80mph to register (not even) 1/4 way around the face.
Who designed this? Haha https://i.imgur.com/UcjD8bh.jpg |
Huh? What the fuck are you talking about? You have difficulty registering your speed?? Because of the Speedo design?? Jesus H.

I suggest you never drive an Aston Martin.
If the speedo makes you cringe, the tach in an AM will drive you nuts. |

I never said I struggled to read the speed; it's digital ffs. I am just saying the mechanical speedo is a stupid design. Go meditate or something before you drive someone off the road |

When I first saw this speedo I said to myself Wow I can go 260 km. After driving it for some time within permissible speeds I don’t see it or view it anymore As it being way too difficult to monitor my speed. the digital one is all I need. Im just used to my other car where the top indicated speed is half of that and the limited sweep is more suited to general legal driving. |
Didn't someone say it was setup to have 86 at the horizontal position? Or something? lol

I find myself having to look at the bottom of the gauge cluster to see the needle under normal driving conditions. The digital speedo is all I watch for driving. But it seems odd it is scaled as it is. |
The dial isn't mechanical any more than the digits are.
Could be one small way to reduce weight by deleting the redundant system. |

I dont know if the speedo ever got that kind of attention. |
If the digital screen ever malfunctions or dies I'll be pretty glad it's there. I don't use it because I don't need it having the digital one available (and the needle usually reads about a mph higher than my actual speed), but I appreciate the redundancy because shit happens, and it'll still be important to know how fast you're going.
|
I have had mine to 12 o’clock. I see no issue with it.
|
I like it. I keep my digital speedo in mph and reference the needle for kmh conversion. My last snowmobile had a 200kmh (120mph) speedo with a 270 degree sweep. Couldn't even see the needle half the time, useless.

To be fair, most "mechanical" (analog/pointer) gauge only use 2/3 the face or 240 degrees of sweep, and 0-80 isn't 1/4 full sweep (90 deg), it's more like 1/3 or 120 degrees. So 80mph is *half* the "normal" 240 degree sweep range.
But surely everyone goes by the digital readout anyway... At least major hashmarks are 20mph increments with 10mph sub-increments and 5mph sub-sub-incrrements, unlike some Porsches which have 25mph major increment with 5mph sub-increments, pretty dumb... |
For such a nicely designed car, I have wondered who the f made the decision to include that redundant and barely readable speedo needle. It's about as useless as tits on a bull.

Reminds me of the time I got a speeding ticket in my brothers 2006 honda civic si. Cop leaned down, looked in the window and said "Does this thing even have a speedometer?":paddle:
|
It’s definitely useless, especially next to the super legible digital speedometer readout. They should have used that space to display oil pressure and temp. Or digital dash.
|
Most of the cars I ever had that had a tach were speedo on the right tach on the left. For the first week or so with the FRS I would keep looking at the left gauge to see the RPMs. They were always very low in the sweep!

My 981 Cayman (2014-2016) had a speedo like this one. The only exception is mine was a base model who's speedo only went up to 175mph. The S and GTS are like the picture below:
