Car doesn't want to shift into any gear when stopped

I'm new to this platform and this is the first problem I have run into. My car won't shift into any gear when it is standing still and on, but if I turn the car off it will shift into any gear with ease. To get the car to move I have to shut the car off put it into first then start it and it will run through the gears. Then it has the same problem when I come to a stop again. When I'm trying to shift into first gear with the clutch fully depressed the car drops slightly in rpm but doesn't move.
Thanks,
Matt

Have you tried to let go of the brake slightly to let the car move a bit so that it gives the internals some slack and enables you to shift into 1st? Sometimes I do d that when it's difficult to shift into 1st when stopped, that has helped.

are you pushing the clutch all the way to the floor? sounds like the clutch isn't fully disengaging.

BRZBoosted 10-01-2020 05:09 AM

The car is warm and the clutch is all the way to the floor. I filled the clutch reservoir and bled the system with no results. Tomorrow I'm going to check and make sure that the trans is full.

RZNT4R 10-01-2020 06:37 AM

Clutch not releasing completely, if it's bled properly, confirm the pedal linkage is working correctly, check for a fluid leak at the master cylinder rod under the dash, if everything checks out your issue will be in the bell housing, either a worn clutch, bad slave or damaged fork.

Stock clutch? Flywheel?
Has the TOB been changed?

+1 sounds like a clutch issue

Have you tried slowly coming off the clutch pedal while trying to get into gear? Sometimes as I have to let it out a bit to get it to engage. It mostly happens to me when going into reverse, but I have felt it a few other times too.

If this is happening every time it is not a user error issue, some part of the system is not working correctly. Either you have a bad seal in the master or slave cylinder and fluid is getting past and therefore the clutch fork is not fully moving, or the clutch fork is bent, or there is air in the system unlikely since you said you bled it) or there is a pressure plate issue (worn spring diaphragm, bent clutch fork, etc). I would chase master/slave faults first.

Any bets on another ACT clutch? Anyone?

Hello BRZBoosted and welcome to our forum -

Have you tried adjusting the clutch?

This is why I asked if stock. The car is boosted so probably a safe bet the clutch is changed.
Everybody is trying to diagnose something when we don't even know what parts are in there.

After the threads that have been popping up the past few weeks, we almost need a sticky on "how to ask a question."

The problem is that the people asking don't know what they don't know.
Everybody tries to help but just throwing out random guesses without all the data just confuses the issue even more.
In this case what clutch he has can make a huge difference in what the issue could be. Like you said the ACT one has a huge history of issues here.

BRZBoosted 10-01-2020 07:20 PM

Thank you for all the suggestions. I don't know what clutch was installed by the previous owner. I'm going to spend some time seeing if it is the slave or master cylinder before I drop out the trans. If I end up needing a new clutch which one should I get. The tune I have on it currently has me at around 300hp to the wheels.

NoHaveMSG 10-01-2020 07:28 PM

Another thing to consider, if the previous owner put a heavy aftermarket clutch in it and left the stock clutch fork, the clutch fork could have bent. They are notoriously flimsy on this car. You may also be able to pull the rubber inspection cover off the top of the engine and look down at the clutch. If the pressure plate is colored, it is not stock. If it is unfinished it could still be aftermarket though.

Inspection cover can be seen in this short video.

If you have a yellow pressure plate, it is an ACT clutch, and they are garbage.

I had lockout issues with mine. When the car is cold, it will get into gear fine up until it warms up.

Made the car so unenjoyable to drive.

Dave-ROR 10-10-2020 03:55 PM

I've heard so many issues with the ACT but I have to admit mine has been fine so far. I'm sure I'll reply to this post at some point in the future to point out it no longer disengages lol

Mine gets finicky on going into gear when hot. Won’t make the mistake of buying an ACT again! Took forever to break in and be smooth, now after 10k miles starting this BS.

I knew I shouldn't have posted anything lol

This weekend at Sebring the car stopped wanting to shift into gears when it got hot, especially 4th so might be a trans issue as well but all gears were a problem when it got hot. Eventually that was after 2 laps..... so yeah looks like I'll be ripping that crap out. ACT has always been great in my other cars so that sucks.

Bonburner 10-28-2020 02:38 AM

I feel like I used to have this issue sporadically when my car was new.
After putting some miles on it, it seems to be less common.

It happened to me again a few days ago after a few years of no issues. Driving around giving it the ol' Italian tune up seems to have remedied my situation.

No idea why it's sporadic.

I just force the thing in there when it happens. If it breaks, it breaks, and I'll get it fixed or get something new.
