Is this site dead or do people just not care about the twins as much anymore?
I've been here for many years now, and seems like the amount of content and enthusiasm for the platform has really died off since the beginning except for the select few. I don't even see many new people on here asking stupid repeated questions as much. You guys think everyone has just moved to facebook/another site, or do you think that the twins just aren't as popular these days?
|
I think that after over 8 years with no significant model changes and a handful of "special editions" that really aren't that special, it's pretty remarkable this forum is as active as it is, even discounting the "social" threads that have nothing to do with the car.
So, no I don't think this site is even close to dead. It will pick up again if/once the GEN2 is released. |
Still seems pretty active to me.
People are still arguing daily over 30yr old Nissan rust buckets over on Zilvia lol. |
dead?!? i've got 25 new posts in 4 hours.
i'm on other sites, where that's new post counts for an entire month... |

I agree, everything that just bolts onto the car has been discussed ad nauseum, so that just leaves social discussions and crazy builds that are pretty rare to begin with. The second gen would give us plenty of new discoveries to make and tinkering to do. The first couple of years of a car are always the most exciting for the forums. |

And Still 500+ people on the site at any given time with a couple thousand at peak hours. Still gets decent traffic. |
The "action" is on the Hakone thread...

You also need to remember that this forum and platform has had above average aftermarket and vendor support. A flood of new parts and R&D, trial and error. Just look at the 30+ odd FI kits made for our cars in the first 6 years! That is huge! The Gen1 is at the end of it's life span. New investments and developments in the platform are mostly gone with a large chunk of the companies even turning over to the shiny new Supra. With next to nothing being released on the 2nd generation of the car (if covid didn't kill it) and nothing relatively new being done with the chassis it will be slower than it's been. :brokenheart: While I miss the tons of new things to read I definitely don't miss the hundreds of post on crickets and ethanol-free fixes each week. I do love seeing some of the earlier adopters of the platform return to it after years out off the forums. It really just reinforces what we love about these cars. |
Forums in general are "dying" because a lot of people moved to social media platforms that make it easier to spew random stream of consciousness derp directly from their phones.
I don't know what this place was like in the past, but it seems pretty active to me and gets a lot more posts and traffic than some other forums I am active at. |
I hope there will always be enthusiasm for the twins, 1st and (hopefully) 2nd gen both. Like was mentioned before it’s still surprisingly active on here for a 8+ year old platform, maybe not as much as several years ago. The 2nd gen will inject a lot of life back into the forums for sure. There will be 1st gen owners switching to the 2nd gen, and new adopters to the platform altogether. I still geek out on here with the wealth of knowledge about the twins, especially the suspension tuning and forced induction topics.
I think our cars will always be a source of affordable sports car fun, even many more years from now. They hold up so well and aren’t too complex to work on. It’s inevitable the 2nd gen will incorporate a lot of new features, and more complexity. I almost wonder if Subaru and Toyota will take more of a AP1 to AP2 S2000 approach with the 2nd gen. I guess you could argue they’ve already done that from the changes made in 2017 and now 2020 models. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Seems pretty busy to me although admittedly alot of the same folks who have been here for awhile and constantly active on the forum. Still a regular stream of new or returning owners to the platform. I think as cars move away from fun machines to appliances even further we will continue to see newcomers and a resurgence in drivers cars. there will always be a place for cars like the twins, miatas, s2000's and such.

Now look, and all that’s going on in that section is the same UEL thread for the past however many years. Also, when the car came out, the popularity was really high, so there were large waves of new users that came in, posted, and then left as they sold/traded their cars. Now most of the people that are left are some of the long time (OG) users, and people who have more recently purchased one within the last couple years. Of course with a variety of others too. Hell, there are people still active on this forum who sold their car YEARS ago and bought something else lol. |

Agreed there, forums are less active since social media took off. I remember 350z-tech in ~2005. That place was LIIIIIIIT |
I think this place is still extremely vibrant. Compared to the 3si.org forum I came from, this is great
|
This site is more active than most of the jeep forums im on. Would be more active but not a huge fan of tapatalk, which leaves me just getting on when im at a desktop at work.

Look at the sales curve over 8 years and keep in mind that as a platform ages, especially without major revisions, interest tapers off. There will be continued interest in these cars 30 years from now, I'll bet on it. In fact it will fall and rise repeatedly.
When the new model hits the market, there will be a greater variety of media for discussion compared to what there was 8 yrs ago. I joined this forum around a month before I got my car in June of 2012. As a then Scion xB owner I had stumbled on the news of an upcoming sports car only weeks before it went on sale and joined a mailing list. The day it went on sale, I placed my deposit. The vehicle arrived maybe 5 weeks later. This all happened due to having the xB as an inexpensive utility vehicle allowing me the budget for a second less practical car. If not for the xB, the FR-S likely would not have happened. I hope there is a fresh crop of enthusiasts in waiting, and keep in mind after this it's going to be hybrid or electric or SUV of some sort for most people. So, if you never ended up with the Porsche you might have liked, here again is the car that might feel just right, hopefully for many thousands of people. I'm waiting for the 4 door version for my daily. Added points for shooting brake. lol |
not dead, My FRS is long been replaced.....but I still like visiting here because @Tcoat

This place sucks. I am switching to Instagram and Facebook where the REAL enthusiasts hang out.
I have only been here for 5 years but the demographics of the site have changed. Makes sense since the used market made the car available to a your crowd. We do see the same things asked time and time again so many just stop answering. The current political climate has also appeared to have scared some away from the more social sections of the site. Hard to tell though since summer always slows down here. |

I like the forums as I’m in the crowd that doesn’t have social media.

I have a list of an absurd number of forums I've been a part of. This is easily one of the more active ones. There can be more new posts on here in a day than some forums get in months.
Now add that to all the facebook groups, the reddit group, and the few other forums for this car out there, and also note there are still several gigantic scion forums going strong, and interest in the car is still high. You just are not going to see many forums get back to what this site was in 2012, or what nasioc.com used to be circa 2005 or so. |
I prefer the forum to the FB groups. All the FB groups are fairly clique-y and that annoys the shit out of me. Plus FB, where people are under their real names, is surprisingly much more toxic. At least all the groups I joined temporarily. And the forum serves as a database of info.

That also goes for most of the other (anti)social media platforms. They are all, for the most part, toxic. |
I prefer the forums as people on the facebook groups aren't very useful for asking questions. However, the facebook groups are good for selling sometimes.

Annex Suspension just did a live Q&A and one of the comments they read is how PD is useless on track and you need to learn how to drive the car and not hammer on it. LOL WTF. |

They tried to use Facebook Workplace here, and it went over like a lead balloon in my opinion. Those that are rabid Facebookers took to it quickly and turned it into, well basically Facebook. I only ever logged in once, basically because I was required to show i have accepted my account. The good news is a lot of the stuff from Marketing/HR/etc that used to flood my email box has now moved to that platform so I don't have to delete as much. |
Facebook is even becoming a thing of the past. For summer Kickoff I now have people who dont see FB or even Instagram, just Snapchat or TikTok or whatever other new app came out in the last 48hrs.
It makes it super hard to keep up. I wish we could get direct urls to regional forums to make it easy to tell people about (ie ft86club.com/forums/norcal) |
